General anaesthetic for uterine polyp removal

Hi
I'm due to have an op next week to remove uterine polyps and I'm absolutely terrified as they're putting me under general anaesthetic..

It's being done by hysteroscope and he said it would only take about ten mins but iv had laryngospasm before as a child with a ga so that's another worry and also how ill feel after it...

I would love to hear everyone's experiences of this op and also ga

I had a GA last year to have a uterine ablation (for fibroids), and a Mirena fitted. I was scared too! But honestly it was so quick, and I woke up feeling fantastic, was walking about after 30 minutes or so, and having sandwiches and tea after an hour. Home that same day.

If you've had a bad experience with GA, would they consider sedation?

Thanks so much for your reply.. I'm just so worried about how i will feel after it... Did you need a breathing tube during the procedure or is it so short you don't need that.. This is what cause the laryngospasm when I had an op as a child so that has me worried x

Hello! I'm afraid I don't know. But I didn't have a sore throat afterwards, like I did the only other time I had a GA.

It was really quick.

I did meet my anaesthesiologist beforehand and I was very open with my worries (I'm just a neurotic) so I'm 100% sure you'd be able to tell yours about your past history, and they'd make appropriate choices for your treatment.

OP do you have a pre-op appointment with the anaesthetist at all? That is who you need to talk to about your fears, they will be able to discuss the risks/benefits of different types of anaesthesia with you, and it’s also important that they are aware of your history.

Laryngospasm isn’t something that’s likely to be a recurrent problem so just because you’ve had it before doesn’t mean it’ll ever be a problem again. You’re probably more likely to have it with inadequate sedation than with a GA. Even if it were to happen again it’s something anaesthetists are well trained to manage. (DOI...am an anaesthetist)

Thank you all for your responses... I am going private for it so will see the anaesthetist on monday before the op and would have had a chance to tell him them...

Greybeard I feel very reassured by your response as you are an anaesthetist, the consultant did say that I would be breathing for myself and only under for ten mins so I'm assuming they won't need to intubate me for that procedure ... I just have such a fear of the whole losing control in it all very silly as theyre very experienced in what they do.. I'd it did happen again is it something that's easily sorted x

I had this under local. Recovery was fine- just a bit crampy!

I had this done a few years ago under GA, and it was life changing - in a good way! I was nervous before the operation but it all went well and I was home later that day. It made such a HUGE difference (I had been having torrential bleeding and after the operation my periods were quite manageable) and I wish I had had it done earlier.

Thank you sugarformyhoney I wasn't given the option for local at all just ga... I'm just so worried about the whole going to sleep thing... I'm going in tomroro at 10am so not long till its all over with.. Did u have much pain or bleeding afterwards? X

I had it done without anaesthetic. Took twenty minutes. Had Paracetamol beforehand and whilst mildly uncomfortable, was entirely manageable.

Cherry pavlova I would honestly prefer to have it done without the ga but really didn't know it was ba option then iv heard so many horror stores of people finding it unbearable... I literally don't know what to do about it 😢 x

Boiled egg and toast thank u so much... I have been having weird symptoms my bleeding has lessens but could be every two weeks and very light for 5 6 days then il have a period 2 to 4 weeks later and its heavier then to back into 26 day cycle for a few months and then back to light bleeding in every 2 weeks it's so weird x

I think if you are spotted as particularly anxious about it then a general might be offered. Some people tell horror stories but they are the minority. Certainly not my experience.

Tbh I think because I was so anxious about what was actually causing my symptoms he probably thought best to knock me out 😂 😂 honestly I could worry about anything but actually tolerate procedures quite well as iv had cold coagulation for abnormal cells and didn't rwally bat an eyelid... Not what u want to be having done but muxh rather that then being under ga for it... Did they put local anaesthetic in ur womb or anything x

First time no. I took paracetamol before went. Second time yes as there was a bit more tugging and chopping. It wasn’t what you’d want as a birthday treat but it was fine.
Change of subject complete- do you live at Hever? I used to stay there as a teenager.

See I think I could cope with pulling and tugging 😂 goodness I'll prob come on here tomoro and be lik what was I worrying about it was so fine lol... No.. I didn't even no that was a place 😂 😂 😊😊

Ur so right... Honestly from this irregular bleeding started it's all I've done so ill be glad when iv had this op and things can go back to normal xx

I had this procedure under ga for endometrial polyps. Very straightforward no problems at all. I think I had a tube down as remember waking up and initially having no voice snd being a bit croaky. Had post procedure bleeding for about a week. Bit of discomfort afterwards managed with paracetamol

Mine was too big to have removed under local. I don't remember feeling sore or anything afterwards. I did feel wiped the day after, so don't have any plans and just rest.

I was to have this with local but felt very anxious when the surgery started so asked to be put out.
I think it’s like heavy sedation and I didn’t have a breathing tube in my throat.
It was the best thing I ever did, good luck x

I genuinely found it quite unstressful. By the way my hospital information said to take sanitary towels with you. I had a couple of days rest afterwards . Mine was done privately and I had a room to myself which was a real bonus. It was minimum four hour stay after procedure. I did stay longer only because I had a good sleep afterward the procedure and wasn't rushed out at all

I'm going private for mine too so I'm hoping it will be a much less stressful environment there and they will. Have time to talk me through it...

Did you feel groggy after the ga? The whole thing about being confused or dizzy afterwards sounds awful 😢

I was anxious because it was my first operation.
I was groggy after mine and that lasted a few days.
