May I?

OP posts:
DebitheScot · 20/07/2007 08:53

ouch can't walk up and down stairs today, feels like someone has shrunk my right calf muscle. Guess I didn't warm down properly after yesterdays run (only did about 2 1/2 miles but did do it fairly quickly).

TheDuchessOfFawkesBride · 20/07/2007 09:39

Can you get some ice on it Debi? In my experience, you can't beat a bag of frozen peas in a very thin tea towel!

mustrunmore · 20/07/2007 10:09

Pidge, it wasnt a pep talk, just an honest observation

Veggiemummy · 20/07/2007 10:10

hi all, back from edinburgh, had a rest from training for 2 days, but will have to get onto it over the weekend and the next week and a half my race is on the 5th august and i want to have a weeks taper before it.

celery, what your doing sounds good for now do what feels right, as long as your increasing is the main thing.

DebitheScot · 20/07/2007 13:09

I'm at work so not erally able to ice it. It's ok when I'm sat down and not too bad when I walk on flat, just the stairs that hurt. It's better now than it was this morning so that's good.

popsycal · 20/07/2007 17:42

Hmph.

Well, I am frustrated and annoyed.
Went out for my usual 1.7 mile loop which I predictably do in just over 15 minutes. But I felt like I hobbled round and not going much faster than walking pace - my leg felt awkward rather than sore.

Took me nearly 2 minutes longer than usual. I think when I did RFL I was too 'bouncy' iykwim. I normally have to force myself to be really conscious of 'creeping' rather than jogging and that went out of the window on Sunday.

Now I am not sure what to do as if I am doing this 10K in what is now 7 weeks, I am worried about getting up to the distance.

TheDuchessOfFawkesBride · 20/07/2007 19:26

I know how you feel Popsycal. I think a bit of rest and a few slow easy runs without the watch while your leg recovers is what's required. If you push it now, you may hurt your leg to such an extent that you won't make the 10k. But if you back off a bit and then get back to training when you're fully fit, I think you'll manage just fine. When you are running your best, you train up really fast.

popsycal · 20/07/2007 19:32

Very true, Duchess. That is what I will do!
Funny though - my leg feels tons better now! But that may be the end of term wine
If I feel ok, I will do a short run on Sunday without the watch.

I also think I may try to find a specialist running shop near here and go in with my trainers and see. I am bizarre as I have very flat feet and therefore roll in. But when I extend my leg in front of me, it is naturally turned out from the hip (that's years of dancing for you) so when my foot hits the ground, it starts with the outer edge of my foot and then rolls in. Does that make sense!??!?! It really does help to 'creep' rather than bounce!!!

Veggiemummy · 20/07/2007 19:49

that is a classic case of overpronation, lots of people thing it is just your foot landing flat but it actually rolls inwards from the outside edge.

i have really sore joints at the moment, don't know if it is from training or some bodily intuition that the weather is about to change, hope it's the later.

popsycal · 20/07/2007 19:59

I hope it is the weather thing too - though I doubt it

popsycal · 20/07/2007 20:12

Hmmm.

SO there is ONE specialist running shop - and I live in a reasonable sized city!! I will take it easy and then if leg not better in a week, I will hobble to the shop with my shoes and ask fro advice

Veggiemummy · 21/07/2007 22:09

wellit didnt happen today went to visit friends in the morning and had planned to run home but forgot my running gear, then was going to run or cycle in the afternoon but got ropped into helping a friend set up her new flatpack furniture.

so nothing for me today, but have plans to get out and do a big day tomorrow, before setting off for a visit to Derby again, will hopefully get sometime to run while up there but no chance to cycle, and unlikely to swim.

popsycal · 22/07/2007 06:41

Well.
I am considering dropping my car off for new brake pads 3 miles away and running back.......
Not sure whether that is a good idea but I really feel that I have to get back into it

popsycal · 22/07/2007 15:50

Decided to go for short run but 2 mins into it, my leg really didn't feel right so I walked straight back home. Although it is annoying me, it is better to wait until it is better than risk not being able to do the 10K at all

DoubleBluff · 22/07/2007 16:26

Hi popsy sounds like you need a good rest.
I ad a nice surprise this morning , they are building a ' lifetrail' along the route I take through the park, so now I can do a bit of Xtraning as well!
( In theory anyway)
And ther is a bit of sunshine here too!

TheDuchessOfFawkesBride · 22/07/2007 19:44

I did a 5k today! It was really hilly too. And hot! The running has been so BAD since I had that cold (just looked down the thread, my last good run was on 8th July ) that I only intended to do a gentle 2k but I felt really comfortable so I just kept going

I am happy now! I was beginning to think that I had completely lost my fitness and would have to start training from scratch again.

TheDuchessOfFawkesBride · 22/07/2007 19:46

DB - what's a 'lifetrail'? DD1 has a trimtrail at school which has things to balance on, swing from and jump over - is it like that? Sounds fun!

DoubleBluff · 22/07/2007 19:51

Yes similar to a trim trail has a station every 50 metres with a different exercise at each one with varying fitness levels too.
Should be good!

HarryDies · 23/07/2007 07:27

I did 4miles yesterday, longest distance I've ever run. Although I was pathetically slow and had to walk for 2mins due to a stitch.

popsycal · 23/07/2007 07:36

who are you........

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 23/07/2007 11:31

Oooops, forgot to namechange back. Its me.

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 23/07/2007 12:05

hi, namechanged from krispie.

got my first 10k on sunday! havent actually run a 10k yet but hoping that i'll be able to get around on the day. I've managed 5.5 miles in training so i reckon i should be Ok. absolutely wrecked, but OK!

What do you all think i need to take with me for a 10k? The race bumpf says to pack your bag the night before but i cant think of anything i need to take really. There's water stations at 3k and 7k so wont bother with a water bottle. Anything else?

Well done everyone on their recent runs.
for popsy though - it must be frustrating to have an injury when you just want to get out there. Hope youre on the mend soon.

mamamoo · 23/07/2007 12:53

I usually pack a jumper for after the race
safety pins for race no
snacks/drink for post race
cos Im in Scotland a binbag for before race (always wet and/or cold!!)

Didnt do my long run yesterday am...my pal pulled out and lazy me thought I would go later (cos was raining)...did I... NO? DH was away but no excuse as I have a baby jogger.

So have to do it tonight...planning a 5 mile loop with one big hill...nice and sunny today for a change so I MUST NOT find an excuse! Also 2nd weight watchers class tonight so perhaps that might inspire me to get my act into gear!

mamamoo · 23/07/2007 12:55

oh and whoever it was that changed their name.....I'm devastated!!!!! Have avoided all HP threads...and now you have spoilt it for me

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 23/07/2007 14:42

ahh, yes, thanks mamamoo. good point about jumper and drink for after. more likely to need a stretcher however!
