severe d+v still not eating or drinking right. help!

dd had really bad d+v, then really low blood sugar levels. still not well, not eating or drinking much. don't know what to do

how old is she?

will she drink flat coke? even a few sips? it's really good for replacing minerals and sugars. Then go on from there.

Have you tried plain rice, dry toast or water biscuits, banana or apple? You don't need to rush it as long as she's drinking enough.

18mo won't drink any milk, and will only drink a coouple of sips of h2o fruit shoot(high in sugar, not wanting to go back to hospital)

My mother gave me boilt rice water, as did her mother before her, and before her again. Basically, you boil rice in plenty of water, sweeten with sugar, and drink the leftover water from the rice when the rice is cooked. (The rice can of course be eaten, but make sure you TOO MUCH water so there is enough water to make a drink.) This settles the stomach, is nourishing and liquid.

If really bad, and dd is very young, you can give her sips of diarylite (you can get it from most chemists) from a spoon, this replaces both lost minerals and the liquid, and will help your dd feeling better.

she hates diralyte. had to hold her down and force feed her it in the hospital. is there a specific amount she should be drinking each day?

who doesn't want to go back to hosp? Have you seen a doc? Why not call NHS direct?

Could you try let her drink with a straw? Any drink is good, from water to squash, juice, but milk (unless breastmilk) is not so good if there is a tummy bug. There are different flavour diaryte. Try putting a spoonfull in her mouth now and then when playing, or looking in a book, watching tv, or something. When my boy (12mts) had this, I spent nearly the whole day just dedicating myself to trying make him drink... It is such hard work when they are so young and dont understand they HAVE to drink.!

dolally, are you sure about halving the water content making the formula stronger? I was advised I could increase the water content to make it a bit weaker, though, as a formula feed is food and not really drink. My hv said when feeding formula to also give baby water to drink as would still be thirsty.

tried with a medicine dropper, that was what i was usuing when i held her down (i feel so mean)

i don't want to go back to hospital. spent 12 hours shoving diralyte down her throat. doctors just dismiss me and make me feel like overprotective mother. she does loads of dirty nappies, mostly just really watery diharoea (however you spell it)

she still on formula milk. thinks cows milk comes out of their willy

Doodle, that would make sense, half formula milk with half water, ie 30oz formula milk and 30oz water to make a drink of 60oz, that would make it half strong. Did that make sense at all?

sorry gals, what I meant was, as you guessed was...make up a bottle and then take half out and replace it with water i.e. diluted...

yes agree,my hv used to remind me - milk is food, but they still need water, and of course milk is NOT ideal in tummy upsets but diluted is OK if it's all they'll take.

Sez, maybe she's getting more fluids than you realize? Take it slowly and if she only wants a teaspoonful of rice or whatever, then don't push it, think of the inside of her tummy as very irritated and inflamed, it really needs gentle care for a few days.

Don't suppose you want any more advice from me though, after telling you to CONCENTRATE the formula!!!

sipping is FINE sez. In fact when one of mine was so sick she couldn't even keep water down the doc said just give her a sip of water every 7 minutes.

Good question - do you know the symptoms of dehydration?

how can you tell most of these in an infant?

she's quite weak, has the sunken eyes, but still seems quite chirpy, playing etc.
