Symptoms Quiz.......

Have gp appt on Friday. Have wonderful range of symptoms. Wanna guess what I've got? - I'll let you know on Friday. Winner getts, oh I don't know. Chocolate or something. Probably.

1 Swelling in armpit that is the size of my cupped hand

2 bouts of pins and needles when doing things like washing up, sewing, writing, peeling potatoes

3 aching neck

4 very painful when you prod me. All over, but especially bad on bad, thighs and sides - I scream! and it hurts for ages

5 numbness and cold feeling in arms and sometimes legs. (comes and goes)

6 feeling hot, feeling cold, feeling like cold water is being run under my skin

7 bloody knackered. falling asleep everywhere, with no notice, unable to stay awake

8 chest feeling tight, like someone has me in a bear hug (comes and goes)

9 very very bad mood. (worse than usual)

10 dropsies. - usually with pins and needles. Hands fall to sides and things drop through my fingers. A good shake can normally restore feeling, although a couple of days ago I was numb all day.

Now, being an obsessive nutter, I googled these and random combinations of these, but frankly, it could be anything.

So to take my mind off the fact I have galloping green lurgie or something, why not hazard a guess with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

forgot to add 11 - electric shocks. Like a charge is building up in me and then discharges and i twitch. Not like a seizure, more a spasm. Similar to when you jerk at night as you fall asleep.

Anyone?

OMG - no guesses but it sounds scary!

codpiece · 04/07/2007 15:00

Good heavens ... sounds awful!

I hope they sort you out and that you feel better soon.

MrsBadger · 04/07/2007 15:06

ooh, this is like House

  1. where are the pins and needles and the loss of feeling? both hands? just one? feet?

  2. any foreign travel?

  3. any pets?

  4. where (if any) do you work and what as?

  5. any weird rashes or anythign?

  6. been ill recently?

symptoms so far seem generally lymphatic to me, esp the swollen armpit

mytwopenceworth · 04/07/2007 15:07

No, no swelling of limbs, just the swelling in my armpit.

My neck pain has got so bad that I can't move my neck at all now without it feeling stretched and 'full' and sore, so I phoned the gp and pleaded Wimpiness and they are fitting me in later today.

Ta for replies folks. psst

ahem. Move along. Nothing to see here.

sounds viral

Bet GP advises paracetamol and rest. Might do bloods, should do an Upper limb neuro exam (testing reflexes etc) beacuase of P&N.

Neck pain, numbness, coldness, running water, pins & needles are nerological symptoms, some of them can be coming from your neck (from an irritated nerve), but as you have systemic (ie whole body) symptoms too (hot, cold, knackered, ?swollen lymph nodes) it's more likely to be something like an influenza ish type virus.

Oh how long have you been feeling like this for...?, that question should be at the top!

binkleandflip · 04/07/2007 15:09

My friend had a swelling in her armpit, pins and needles, sore neck. Cant remember the term but something to do with vertebrae 7 not in line or something..am I close?

mytwopenceworth · 04/07/2007 15:10
  1. where are the pins and needles and the loss of feeling? both hands? just one? feet? Mainly left arm and hand, but both esp when washing pots for eg. A bit in the legs from time to time.
  1. any foreign travel? Nope

  2. any pets? Psychotic cat.

  3. where (if any) do you work and what as? sahm.

  4. any weird rashes or anythign? nope.

  5. been ill recently? always ill! Nope, not significantly.

Sounds horrid, hope you feel better soon. How long has this been going on? Have to say I think I'd be down the doctor sooner than Friday but I get freaked out easily. I'd too say thyroid issues - have you lost gained any weight? Or at an outside chance glandular fever. Or Shingles but you're missing the rash but the other symptoms sound very like shingles.

mytwopenceworth · 04/07/2007 15:12

Well, I have had on and off pins and needles for yonks - years, but since it goes away when I shake my arms, I never bothered about it, everyone gets pins and needles. Same with the twitches. The other bits - neck pain, numbness, cold water feeling, swelling etc. That's new - few days.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 04/07/2007 15:17

bet sore neck is due the the lymph nodes in yr neck being swollen

sounds like your body is going mad trying to fight off a perceived invader (pins & needles, loss of sensation etc can result from hugely swollen lymph nodes restricting blood supply to extemities)

my money's on a virus, or at the outside something autoimmune.

noddyholder · 04/07/2007 15:17

polymyalgia?

Slubberdegullion · 04/07/2007 15:18

Well the long standing P&N could be thoracic outlet syndrome (nerve compression under your top rib)....but you'll commonly only feel that in your little and ring fingers (esp if carrying suitcases). Running water up and down arms if a sympathetic nervous system symptom...not related to nerve compression in your neck.

I'm still going for viral with the new symptoms...but I'm not a GP . I am married to one mind....a systemic viral infection I'd lay good money on him saying!!

MrsBadger · 04/07/2007 15:19

shouldn't have thought so - symptoms not sufficiently muscular

paulaplumpbottom · 04/07/2007 15:20

poor you

mytwopenceworth · 04/07/2007 18:56

Went to gp. He said he thought it might be a trapped nerve in my neck which would explain most of the symptoms. He couldn't find a lump in my armpit, even though I have pain and can feel it! He said I might be getting false feelings(?) He said something about a burser ??(sp) and showed me a shoulder joint and said something I can't remember about that and resistance or something.

Anyway, upshot is he has told me about the physio clinic they run and told me to show up there initially for them to take a look at me. So off I go tomorrow.

(Part of me thinks he doesn't actually know and he's palming me off on them!!)

Thank you folks for your contributions.

OP posts:
Weegle · 04/07/2007 19:30

Well at least you didn't instantly freak him out and well done for going. Good luck at the physio. The bursa is like a small cushion of fluid which cushions certain joints and these can become inflammed and could quite well be what you are feeling - this could also explain why maybe you can feel it but he couldn't because it may be better at some times than others. Anyway, really hope the physio sorts you nice and quick!

mytwopenceworth · 04/07/2007 20:06

Ta. I did apologise for subjecting him to my armpit, which made him laugh!

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 05/07/2007 14:27

How did the physio go? I'm a physio and would be interested to hear if they think your arm symptoms are related to your neck pain!

[nosey sahm emoticon desperate to use a liitle bit of her physio brain again]

mytwopenceworth · 05/07/2007 18:31

yes. The physio clinic. Gp said yesterday - come tomorrow, it runs every Thursday.

I walked in. Dh drove off for his dental appt and was to pick me up after.

I said Hi, I'm here for the physio clinic. Receptionist said. It's not on today, physio is on holiday. She's back next week.

ARGH. Borrowed their phone to call dh, who did a uturn and came to get me.

We drove to the dentists. He went in.

Came back out 2 minutes later.

His appointment was yesterday.

Slubberdegullion · 05/07/2007 18:47

and , Oh dear. Better luck next week with the physio. Have you started taking some ibuprofen to help with the neck pain?
