For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

I like this title so much I am thinking of joining the thread....

do I get shouted at if I don't make it to 10 every day?

BBBee · 05/07/2007 10:28

what do you count NQC carrot cake as? is it a portion or overruled by the sugar?

MrsCarrot · 05/07/2007 10:44

Are you still in the lack of sleep phase too, Boco? I can't remember how old your dc's are..

Prague - how exciting, I do hope you can go, and then send us updates of food, buildings and colours, wondering the streets on your own, stopping for a coffee in some impossibly romantic side street with peeling blue paint, a heavy scent of pastries, a newspaper rustling, and having breakfast in bed, what a treat!

Lionhart - Suma is a wholefood cooperative where you can buy in bulk with friends etc, if you spend over a certain amount, think Frany said £300, though I expect they mainly supply businesses.

Mrs Carrot I can recommend doing a monthly online shop for dry goods to save money. I think a problem we have had in the past was doing several small shops a week - we always ended up buying more than we needed each time. I think it can be good to be of the mindset that you do a monthly shop and if you run out of something - tough, you have to make do until the next shop. If you get a f & v box too, it's great, you only have to go to the shops for dairy / fresh food / bread. And it's easier to restrict yourself to these things because you know you already have everything else you need.

ernest · 05/07/2007 11:56

you've inspired me to aim for the 10 too, and my kids, we made it to 7 yesterday, but considering spent whole pm at birthday party not too bad.

One q, if raw is best & steaming recommended, doesn't that mean all these slow cooked soups & stews & sauces have lost their nutritional content, or becasue you're not draining them it's retained or what? Does anyone know? It hought cooking killed vitamins? Am confused? and slightly nimportant, but for the purposes f this, are tomatoes fruit or veg?

And what exactly counts as green leafy veg? Broccoli? cabbage (only drak, or light green, ie white cabbage too?) what else, at my supermarket yesterday, these seemd to be the only green things, apart fromlettuce

3andnomore · 05/07/2007 12:28

lol, pinkspottywellies for not having any...I have pink flowery ones
And anyway, what do you and Carrot have against Banana sandwiches...I am with Franny there...I love Banana and Peanut Butter sandwiches...but they are a rare treat, as I try to avoid eating bread in general, and Peanut Butter is to calorific...saying that, if I ever do get around to make my own Nutbutter, I most defiately will make myself a Nutbutter/Banana sandwich
NQC...not sure I really get what you mean, but it does sound unpleasant, but glad you have found a way to deal with it, that works for you.
Franny, sorry that I put you off Juices....I am sure I will soon enjoy them again, just need time to forget about the experience, lol....!
Greeny...I probably sound really stupid, but what is skunk?
lol Boco at being pitties about your excitement of quote of teh week on mn...people just don't get it, eh ;)

Anyways, so far have had Galia Melon, 1 Kiwi, 2 Peaches, 2 little Pears...will probably have some fresh Pineapple, as I got to sitting on the side, and Dinner is smoked Macarel with lots of salad, that much I know....! Also done some exercise, Tae Bo and one Hollywood workout (and yes that is ass cheesy as it sounds...well, the people are anyway, lol)

3andnomore · 05/07/2007 12:30

Ernest not to sure about teh stew question, sorry....but soups, well, they don't have to be over cooked and stewed for that long.

As for green leafy, Kale, Spinach, Rockett are some that spring to mind...Rocket has apparently more Iron in it then Spinach, and think people genereally are more likely to like it in a salad

SauerKraut · 05/07/2007 12:33

I am back on the wagon big-time here. This morning I rode my trailer bike with dd3 to the Co-op to procure the necessary for a 10/10 day, thus combining the two aims of this thread- how's that! A Blue Peter Badge, will do nicely, thanks.
Franny, if I remember rightly from my Aberdeen years, jandies are any sort of germ- "nah-nah nah-nah-nah you've got the jandies", I have a vague memory of groups of brats marauding round the playground shrieking at some poor uncool victim.
I have eaten rocket, lettuce, broccoli, green beans and falafel or however you spell it,those chickpea doodahs anyway.

And hi Ernest. I think the thing is to cook them for the least amount of time possible. I also just do meat and sauce in a casserole, steaming all the veggies to put on the side. For soups you're meant to cook the veggies whole in the stock, again until only just done, then liquidise, to retain as many vitamins as possible. Hope someone has better info, will be interested.

SauerKraut · 05/07/2007 12:36

Hey, 3andnomore, your juicy mastur...thingy sounds great- the nut butter particularly interests me as I spend a fortune on the kind with nothing extra added. May I ask where they can be got from?

SauerKraut · 05/07/2007 12:37

And lololol at Franny being put off Juices!!!

lionheart · 05/07/2007 12:41

More's the pity! And the most expensive, of course, is the nicest- almond butter. Yum. The dcs get it wrapped up at breakfast time on the morning of their birthdays. And Father Christmas has been known to drop it down the chimney.

3andnomore · 05/07/2007 12:55

Sauerkraut, I think all masticating Juicers give the choice of also making Nutbutters and Pastas and Sorbets.
I have the following,\link{ cgi.ebay.co.uk/Easy-Health-Live-Enzyme-Juicer-wheatgrass-masticating_W0QQitemZ190097816729QQi hZ009QQcategoryZ20677QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem\ Easy Health Life enzyme Juicer}which is the cheaper ones of the kind on the market, and am happy enough with it (bought it from that seller, btw, and service was excellent, too)...of course I have no comparison to one of the real good models, lol!

And here a general E-bay Link of masticating Juicers. link
Seems there is even a cheaper modle out there, but no idea how good, etc..it is.

Once I have done Nutbutter, I shall let you know if it is worth it.....I have no idea how manu nuts, etc...you need to even get a small glass....so, it may well works out cheaper to buy it....iykwim

3andnomore · 05/07/2007 12:57

hm, bit confused now with teh linking....and why the 2. link worked in the old way and how the new way exactly is meant to work, lol...hm....

SauerKraut · 05/07/2007 12:58

Nice one, thanks. I shall be masticating away all afternoon now, and dismaying Dh with my extravagance when he comes in!

3andnomore · 05/07/2007 13:03

lolololol...now that does sound rude

SauerKraut · 05/07/2007 13:13

so it does! Didn't even notice, even though my mind is permanently in the gutter. Better hope Dh doesn't see this thread or expectations might be disappointed!

3andnomore · 05/07/2007 14:12

rofl...

FrannyandZooey · 05/07/2007 16:30

Golly this is a busy thread today

SK, you can also make nut butters with a grinder attachment on a blender, or coffee / nut grinder.

BBB we have a fruit and veg box delivered weekly, and in theory I just need one trip to greengrocers each week to top up. I also do an online order from Goodness Direct once a month, and the aforementioned Suma collective once a month. We make our own bread and don't drink cow's milk, so not much else to buy out of necessity. However I do currently get cheese and yogurts from supermarket and always end up buying loads of tat while I am there. Our last box scheme people used to deliver cheese as well which solved that problem, but I have got crap about supermarkets again.

Ernest, all the water soluble vitamins will be retained in the stews and soups, and the fibre and so on is all still there. I don't think minerals are affected by heat, either, and they will be retained in the cooking liquid too. So still lots of good stuff in there.

3andnomore I believe Greeny is referring to a rather potent form of the popular young person's drug known as cannabis.

Boco how dreadfully exciting. I would be in the strait jacket by now, last minute changes of plans and waiting to see what happens are NOT my cup of tea at all.

PAPILLON!!!! How on earth are you? Ds went to a fairy workshop today and made butterfly wings which he is wearing right now, you will be pleased to know. It was one of a beautiful series of activities run by a children's conservation trust. They teach them about the different kinds of animals and plants and encourage them to look after them, through crafts and stories about magic.

NQC hope you have had a good day.
