another period/pregnancy question

Spod · 07/08/2004 21:31

not sure where this question should be posted but... okay, dd is 9.5 months old, still breastfeeding. I think i have had 2 periods... 28 days apart, only they were short...only bled for 2-3 days... not much to them really... pre-pregnancy they were 7 days, heavy and painful. So i was expecting my next period on monday just gone... no show.... and we had an accident with a condom. But, after the accident, a few days after, was when i thought my period had come.. but like i say, it was really short if it was one. I did a pregnancy test a week ago which was negative. All this week i have had cramps, but no period. i do feel a bit off colour... but that could just be tiredness... what do you think?

i would test again - when I was pg with ds I had what I thought was very light period (3 days, very light, bit of cramping), but turned out I was 5 weeks pg!

oh gawd... i was hoping you would all come back and say 'no, definately no chance you're pregnant'. bum. should i wait a couple of weeks or would a test be able to detect it by now?

MummyToSteven · 07/08/2004 23:26

I think it is worth doing a pg test again maybe on Monday - two ways of looking at it - either you go for cheap poundland/home and bargain tests, or you go for boots/first response good quality tests. I would also go to GP's even if test is negative, and you have no AF to see if they think it is worth looking into any further. Before dd, were your periods quite regular?

Spod · 07/08/2004 23:31

periods were dead regular before dd... 28 days, cramps, heavy etc.... should my periods be fairly regular by now then? i thought maybe they were gonna be a bit random cos still bf (i'm bit ignorant about all this, first baby). Also... i had a c-section, and was advised not to get pregnant for a year..... obviously i havent planned another... but was are the implications if i am?

OP posts:
MummyToSteven · 07/08/2004 23:45

spod - as i only bfed for two weeks, and got my first (heavy) period 5.5 weeks after birth, i don't know the answer as to whether having a few light periods at the start is normal. I do know that some women get af a few months into bfing, whilst others don't get af till after they have stopped. I don't know the implications for pg after caesarian - i guess that may partly depend on the reason for the c-section, and also whether you would be able to have a VBAC. I don't think it is particularly likely that you are pg, but as it is possible, it should be checked out!

MummyToSteven · 07/08/2004 23:52

on another old thread on c-sections a poster (I think bloss) said that the advice to wait 1-2years between pgs was out of date (I think coz they don't have to make as big cuts these days!)

ChicPea · 07/08/2004 23:56

I became preg when my DD was 4mths and as she was breech I had a C Section. My DS was also a C-Section and even easier the second time! So don;t worry.

Spod · 08/08/2004 11:34

thanx guys, looks like i should do another next next week then. I'm hoping that its just that my periods are not regular yet... I don't think i want another baby just now, and i really dont want to face making a decision about what to do.

okay... now i am concerned... even dh thinks i'm pregnant....because have been as premenstral as last time! (i was a bit mood-swingy for a while), still got cramps today... will get a test 2morrow i think. altho' i don't want another baby right now, i definately do want another child....i dont think i could face a termination... also, i have a connective tissue disorder, which means i take longer to heal and mend.. which is why i am worried about getting pregnant again/having another section... i would need a section because of spinal probs.... i have a few pregnancy symptoms... but maybe its all in my head, don't really have anyone to talk to about this ... dh is great though, but no-one on the outside iykwim. feeling a bit grim.

fingers crossed for you, spod. If you do turn out to be PG, whatever you decide, there will be loads of support for you here on MN. take care

x

Spod -re:the C-Sections - there is a very recent thread on childbirth - called something like C-Sections urgent advice needed about PG after a C-Section. Mears has posted on this - its more a case of the wait being to help u recover strength than risk of anything nasty happening if u get pg too soon

Spod · 09/08/2004 19:33

well i did another test and it's negative... which is good... but still wondering where my AF is then!? and why do i feel like total shit?

OP posts:
MummyToSteven · 09/08/2004 19:46

sounds hopeful, Spod. Think a visit to the GP is called for; possibly your hormones are taking time to right themselves prior to your first AF? It might help if you posted something on the lines of first period after breastfeeding????

kalex · 09/08/2004 19:48

Spod, totally off topic, did you and dd have a better weekend, has she learn't that bumping into things hurts

Spod · 09/08/2004 21:15

thanks mummytoseven... i will do a post as you suggest... see what people think. thanks for being around.
Kalex... yes we have had a lovely weekend... my parents are visiting and for the first time today i left dd for an hour and she was totally fine... never left her before as dont have family who are local. she's still banging her head a bit, but not so often! poor love!

OP posts:
Spod · 16/08/2004 22:35

Okay... still no period...2 weeks after i was expecting one. I've done a bit of web searching and apparently lighter/shorter than normal periods can happen if still breatfeeding because the prolactin can prevent ovulation and therefore periods will be different.... I'm still getting some cramps although this is lessening .... is there something wrong, should i see GP (and say what?... my GP is a hag) or just sit tight and see what happens in 2 weeks from now?

OP posts:
MummyToSteven · 16/08/2004 22:36

Spod - how about going to the family planning clinic if you think you'll get no joy from your GP.

fuzzywuzzy · 16/08/2004 22:41

Spod if it helps I didn't get a period for six months after I had dd, although I would still get cramps bang on time. Prior to having dd I was also regular. After the birth though I did bleed for like 6 weeks then had a period almost straight away hmph I was keeping the makers of always sanitary prducts in business me. Apologies to anyone I have made feel ill.

Spod · 16/08/2004 22:45

if it is just that my hormones are all over the place... can something be done to get them back in line!?

OP posts:
MummyToSteven · 16/08/2004 22:47

the pill or mini-pill?

Spod · 16/08/2004 22:53

i was on the pill about 10 years ago... turned me into a mad woman...so not keen

OP posts:
MummyToSteven · 16/08/2004 22:55

hmmm can't think of anything else other than to let nature take its course, but go to a nicer doctor just to double check things.

MummyToSteven · 16/08/2004 22:55

and in the meantime we will have to keep bumping until Mears appears!

johno · 16/08/2004 22:56

i have just come off the pill injection for a second time as we want to try for second child, first time my periods started 2 days after my date for next injection was pregnant within 4 months, bin off 5 weeks now but no periods yet, bin having cramps though
