dd has been overtired (we've been overdoing it a bit). On Thursday she came back from nursery with the beginnings of a sticky eye which i've bathed and now have drops from boots that i'm doing every 2 hours.

Last night I took her temp, not sure why as she wasn't hot but it was almost 39, so did the usual.

This morning, she is bouncing off the walls and had a humdinger of a tantrum, I ended up in tears too as terrified she would seriously hurt herself

Now her temp has come down but her lips and fingers are blue..this happens alot but she's still racing around like a mad thing.

I read the instruction for the antibiotic drops and it doesn't say anything about not taking with other AB's (she's on long term ab's for kidney reflux)

Should I just phone nhs direct, it seems a bit mad considering her energy levels.

am having a nervous breakdown here cos I get so worried sometimes

Good luck DelGirl. Let us know.

SillyMillysMummy · 09/05/2007 10:45

oh good luck delgirl, I am sure she will be up to going away next Thursday, even if they decide on iv ab's its usually a max of 7 days, and she will be feeling loads better in a couple, as soon as they get the ab's and fluids into her for a couple of days, she will be back to normal {smile}

DelGirl · 09/05/2007 12:20

well, we're back from the gp. Don't know where to start really. As is the norm, dd was totally fine when we went, all singing and dancing when she's calpol'd up!. He at least checked her over and announced that she was fine. I tried to stress that she is always like that when she's had medicine & that she loves people & is usually very cheerful regardless. But, she is not, I know. To cut a very long story short, i'll miss out the bit where I was spitting feathers and crying hysterically. I managed to remain calm. The upshot is. All children will drink if they're thirsty its just a matter of waiting!!!! No child can go without drink for too long, it makes them ill........you don't say?! I have to get a sample and the one suggestion that was good was to put cotton wool in her nappy. Oh, he asked me why I hadn't seen them last Friday when she had a temp. I said if I did that everytime, i'd ben in there all the time. You can't win! He said, well you may think you were saving us time as we're busy but you're taking up time now. spit spit . I could rant for hours. I said she always looks well when shes on calpol etc and then he said, well dont give it to her then bring her in and we can see for ourselves, i'm not lying. Why won't they believe me. He said if I take her to hospital they won't be able to do any more before they get a sample but I think at least they have resourses (sp) to check there and then, or at least within a few hours. Think i've said enough. dd is watching cbeebies and she has a drink & i'm going to let her get on with it and see, if I leave her be, she might drink. The question is, do I go to hospital later or back to the gp? phew

SillyMillysMummy · 09/05/2007 12:28

Delgirl, this is beyond a joke now. Have they not given you the kit to collect the urine? Cotton wool is no good because its not sterile!! Did the hospital say that you could go into the ward? or just a&e? The kit has a sterile pad that you put in the nappy, then when she has had a wee the kit also has a sterile syringe and pot, you syringe the wee out of the pad, put it into the pot, and then the hospital can look at it immediately to see if there are any rods, they can send it away too, but thats only a second check.

DelGirl · 09/05/2007 12:32

crying now, I know, I asked for the bag, have done several times. they don't have them and I know the cotton wool not sterile so yes a bit pointless. gp said, she won't keep a bag on but I think she will, well I know she will as she has before and her nappy can go on top. the more I think of it, the more I think I need to go to a&e, even if i do risk looking like some mad mother. I think just a & e btw, unless I just go up to the ward but they may just kick me off.

DG - just seen this. Your GP is a complete arse!!!! When A is better and you have the time I would write a letter of complain to the practice manager. Wasting his time fgs?!!!

Anyway, if you can bear it I think I would take her to hospital. At least they will take you seriously, from what they said to you on the telephone. As you say, it's the potential long term damage that's worrying too.

You are doing a brilliant job, hang on in there and let me know later how you get on.

(On the subject of high temps, mine is still up so still on the paracetemol and lots of water and throat sore first thing - ho hum!)

DelGirl · 09/05/2007 12:36

and I was going to say its not our fault she was put on the wrong ab's

OP posts:
DelGirl · 09/05/2007 12:38

I am going to take her, might ring and speak to them 1st though. I'm sure the gp knows how serious it can be but I think the hospital are even more aware. i'll text later if I can. hope you feel better later too.

OP posts:
DelGirl · 09/05/2007 12:38

feel better soon I mean not later, thats no good

OP posts:
Merlin · 09/05/2007 12:40

Exactly DG - your GP put her on the wrong bloody things! I was just going to suggest ringing the ward first - they sounded a bit more helpful. Sure they will suggest coming in and then at least you know she will be properly looked at and a urine test done etc etc. Try not to get upset, you are doing everything you can for her - it's the other buggers who are letting you and her down!!!!

Good luck - hope to hear from you later. R sends a cuddle for A.

WanderingTrolley · 09/05/2007 12:41

Pack a bag.

Go to A&E.

Sorry she's still poorly. You're her mother, you know her better than the gp, why can't gp believe you ffs? on your behalf.

WanderingTrolley · 09/05/2007 12:44

If you phone first, might they try to fob you off too? Don't mean to scare monger, but once you're there they have to deal with you.

I would mention my lack of confidence in the gp,the standard of care you've received so far and your concern that following your gp's advice may result in kidney damage. Sometimes, unfortunately, you have to lay it on thick.

DelGirl · 09/05/2007 12:48

ok, so now she's drunk a cup of juice hoorah, i'm very pleased but now I can't say she's not drinking and her temp is ok at the mo. But that could change and she's not on any ab's now so that needs looking at. Right, I know what to say to the hospital when I ring.now.

OP posts:
LilRedWG · 09/05/2007 12:58

Oh DG - your GP sucks!!!! Can you change practice or GP within the practice? Agree with others. Get DD checked out at hospital and when she's all better, make an official complaint about the GP's treatment of you and DD.

SillyMillysMummy · 09/05/2007 12:59

Heres what i would do. Ring the hospital, tell them you want a urine collecting kit and can they look at her urine straight away once you have the urine, as in your opinion she has an infection, i am sure that will not be a problem for them, they will do it, they just look at it under a microscope, it takes seconds, ring them first though, in ours you cant even get access without having rung first. Chin up, you are doing eveything you can

DelGirl · 09/05/2007 13:06

ok spoke to staff nurse at hospital and told her everything. SHe says they'd never advise to come off ab's and not put on something else or something like that and to give calpol etc. she said some people don't give it so they can see how bad they are but they don't agree with that. Prob not making much sense. her advice is to try her on a pot to get a clean sample & take to a & e. Will give it an hour, see how she is and or take sample from cotton wool. She said the advice we've had so far isn't great.

WanderingTrolley · 09/05/2007 13:08

Sounds like you're getting somewhere

Good luck with wee collection.

SillyMillysMummy · 09/05/2007 13:10

good, now you're getting somewhere, keep on it

LilRedWG · 09/05/2007 13:13

Glad someone is listening to you finally.

Twinmummyx2 · 09/05/2007 13:51

Hi Delgirl.

Hope your little girl is feeling a bit better. My boys havve been on the anti-biotics for kidney reflux too. I was told it was a preventative anti-biotic and it wouldn't stop them getting other infections.
How old is your DD? are the docs hoping the reflux will just fix itself?

I know form mine having teh occasional UTI sometimes a different anti-biotic is needed for the different bugs that have caused them so it can take a while to get it right.

Let me know how you get on.x

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 09/05/2007 13:53

Oh DelGirl - sorry that you're having to put up with this. To say get a sample and then not even provide you with a bag is crap. To take her off the anti-b's and not gice something else is crap too. & for you. Hope the drink works it's way through and you can get a sample asap.

DelGirl · 09/05/2007 14:29

update, managed to squeeze a drop out of the cotton wool. But have sat with her on my lap for about an hour, then on the potty. She got fed up, got up, asked her to sit on it whilst I got a nappy, then hey preston, on queue, she weed on the carpet and her trousers . So, we're off to hospital with our piss poor piss pot lol can you tell i'm losing it
