I've already booked the GP appointment as I'm getting another issue checked out. I thought this was a pen mark but it's not. I was merely curious about it when I googled but noted skin melanoma is associated with black lines like these. I haven't hit it recently to cause trauma and it doesn't hurt.

Erm - anyone else had this?

Confused

Yes, chase that nail.

TwitterQueen1 · 15/02/2018 17:26

Op I'm not entirely reassured by what your doctor has said. The bit about glass or plastic being stuck sounds like complete nonsense.

When you said he hadn't heard about 'this story' do you mean that he hadn't heard that lines like this can be symptomatic of cancer? If so, and without wishing to worry you or panic you, can I please ask you to go back to a different doctor for a second opinion?

This is not something you should just dismiss - and neither should your doctor.

bobstersmum · 15/02/2018 17:30

Hoping everything turns out to be nothing op!

MrsEricBana · 15/02/2018 17:32

Picking up on something in that Independent article, my dermatologist said would likely affected the skin at the base of the nail and the article says can affect the nailfold and in your picture yours definitely doesn't and looks fainter up that end. Hopefully this is good sign.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/02/2018 17:47

NICE Guidance is 2 week referral for new pigmented line under the nail

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 15/02/2018 18:18

I feel a little silly now for not pushing it more. I clearly looked at the doc like I didn't believe him and said that I didn't think anything had gone into it...

Should I do anything in the meantime?

OP posts:
MrsEricBana · 15/02/2018 18:27

Yes I think go back to different GP and ask again given all of the above.

loveyoutothemoon · 15/02/2018 18:58

MrsEricBana that's not true, I've had splinter hemorrhages on my nails and the nail fold hasn't been affected and I've now got an affected nail fold without the other.

alotalotalot · 15/02/2018 19:01

I would, armed with printouts of the info on here.

BuzzKillington · 15/02/2018 19:08

likely to be a piece of glass or plastic that had become stuck under my nail - this sounds highly unlikely. Surely you would have noticed this and also, it would almost definitely be tender.

I would go back and see a different GP asap.

Backenette · 15/02/2018 19:11

Great on the lump

I echo the others who say do NOT wait weeks to see if the line resolves. It’s already been there long enough to grow out over the nail. You do not mess around with even the merest whiff of a suspicion of melanoma. Take those NICE guidelines to the other doc and don’t leave without a two week fast track appt.

Isadora2007 · 15/02/2018 19:14

Another one satin definitely get checked out. My husband had similar with a toenail and was seen very quickly by dermatology. It was all fine thankfully but they said they always wanted to check lines in nails of those colours (or not the “normal” white lines)

GlassHeart1 · 15/02/2018 19:18

I echo many of the above - my DC was misdiagnosed by a consultant in the past and it took me years to realise drs don't know everything.

Noloudnoises · 15/02/2018 20:41

Hello, as soon as I saw your picture I remembered that story about skin cancer.

Not sure where you are but what about a private mole clinic or similar?

MrsEricBana · 15/02/2018 22:28

Ah ok loveyoutothemoon, I stand corrected though it's what he said in my case. Hope yours resolve soon.

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 16/02/2018 11:04

Loveyoutothemoon - with a splinter hem how quickly does that go?

OP posts:
loveyoutothemoon · 16/02/2018 11:24

At least a few weeks, I never get them the full length of the nail, just near the end of the nail, a few mm long.

thegreylady · 17/02/2018 18:26

This is a pic of a melanoma taken from Google images please don’t wait love. I know you will be worried but you need to be sure.

thegreylady · 17/02/2018 18:27

Yours is much fainter than that though.

TwitterQueen1 · 20/02/2018 09:05

Morning OP!

I'm here to nag you. Have you made another Dr appointment yet? If not, do it this morning. And as Bore says above, print out the guidelines here [https://cks.nice.org.uk/melanoma-and-pigmented-lesions#!scenario] and take them with you.

nag nag nag nag nag nag nag nag nag......

MrsEricBana · 20/02/2018 20:44

Ditto! How's it going OP?

ImmortalityMyDarlings · 21/02/2018 12:00

Hello everyone - so GP not until Monday. I did keep the appointment! It's like this now, hasn't faded. It's been approximately two weeks now.

OP posts:
TwitterQueen1 · 21/02/2018 12:06

Pleased to read that you've made the appointment OP Smile. Will it be a different GP or the one you saw before? This needs to be taken seriously.

Do please keep us updated.
