A couple of months ago I went back on the combined pill, about 8 weeks after having dd. In the first month I had a bit of spotting, which I had before when starting the pill. Its my pill free week from monday, and I have had a small amount of bleeding for a couple of days. However, I have been feeling like I want to be sick for a few days now, and my boobs really hurt, which isn't normal for me even when I'm due on, only when I was just pregnant with ds and dd. Could I be pregnant? Would the pill cause bleeding if I was? I haven't done a test and don't really want to because I might be reading to much into my symptoms. Can anyone help? Anyone got pregnant whilst on the pill?

I am really quite anxious about this as I am on medication that shouldn't be taken if pregnant, there must be some one who can help me out.

happy, think you know the answer to this one - the only way to be sure is to take the test.
There is a tiny tiny risk of conception whilst on the pill, but it is tiny - but I am sure there are MNers here who can attest to the pill not being 100%
Have you had any sickness / diahorrea, any antibiotics etc, anything that could have interfered with the pills effectiveness?
Test, you're probably not, but it will put your mind at rest

happy1 · 24/07/2004 16:10

No I haven't had anything that could of affected it, I think I will have to test, but I will have to wait til monday when dp is at work, I don't want to worry him unless I have to.

Some medications can affect the pill- but I would assume your doctor would have checked that. The only people I know who have got pregnant whilst on the pill have missed one.

happy1 · 24/07/2004 16:56

I haven't missed one, I take it the same time everyday without fail! And yes, my doctor did check the medication didn't affect it.

happy1 - I hope it all works out for you.

HelloMama · 24/07/2004 18:50

The breast tenderness and nausea are very common side-effects when starting the combined pill and can last for about the first three months. If you haven't missed any pills or taken any late then its unlikely you're pregnant, but if you're very worried then I would take a test just to reassure yourself. If you're still experiencing these side-effects in the next pack of pills you may want to consider changing pill brand - just go back to your doctor or family planning clinic and they can help you.

I got pregnant with ds whne on the combined pill. It remains a mystery to this day... I never missed a period and had no positive test until I was literally showing at 5 mths
Very bizarre in that case though...

happy1 · 26/07/2004 18:51

I did a test today and it was negative, but I still have a nagging feeling. the more I think about it the more i'm convinced i'm pregnant! I've been on the pill several times before, and I've never had nausea or painful boobs before on it. My symptoms are as follows;
painful boobs
feeling sick
heightened sense of smell
funny taste in mouth
and the ability to fall asleep at any time of day! I'm just so tired.
I actually felt disappointed when I got the neg result, but we really don't want another baby, especially as I only had dd less than 5 months ago.
It's all I can think about. I thought the test would put my mind at rest, but it's made me feel worse. I don't know what to do with myself.

The feelings you describe could still be side-effects of the pill, but if your pill-free week only started today then it may be a bit early for a pregnancy test to be accurate. I would wait until Friday / Saturday and then the result should be a true result. Don't forget that even if you have a bleed during your pill-free week, it can still be possible to be pregnant, especially if the bleed is much lighter / shorter than usual. I would do another test just to make sure.

Putting it very simply, the way the pill works is to trick your body into believing its already pregnant so thats why the side-effects are very similar to pregnancy: the nausea, tender breasts, sometimes cravings, etc.

If the next pregnancy test is still negative and these side-effects are still occurring then I suggest you consider changing brands. I wouldn't just stop taking the pill, get some advice first. What brand are you currently using, and is it the same as what you used in the past?

happy1 · 26/07/2004 19:25

it's microgynon 30, and yes its the one I've always been on. i think i will wait and do another test at the end of the week, and go to doctors if it is neg and i'm still getting these 'symptoms'

OP posts:
HelloMama · 26/07/2004 19:32

Microgynon 30 is the bog-standard combined pill that most women are started off on, but it doesn't suit everyone which is why there are so many brands available! Even though you've used it before doesn't mean it will suit you this time around as your hormones may have changed, etc. I would do the 2nd test at the end of the week and then go and see your doctor to see about changing to something else. HTH. Take care!

Thanks hellomama, I'll post again when I do the other test

It's positive. I don't know what to say to dp, he knows I did a test on monday and he was very relieved it was negative. I'm scared he's not going to want this baby. I know I'm not going to cope very well, ds is just 2 and dd 5 months, but I wouldn't be able to get rid of it. any advice on how to break it to him?

No advice just a big hug {{{{{}}}}}}

Cadbury · 30/07/2004 10:12

Hi happy, I've been following this thread since the weekend. Just wanted to senfd a great bug hug your way. What a shock! Do you think you ought to get it confirmed by the doctor? If you haven't already, I'd stop taking the pill. As for your dp, I can only think that a strong drink and a chair should be on hand. If not for him .... Keep us posted about what his reaction is. I'm sure everything will be ok. Thinking of you, cadders xxx

happy1 · 30/07/2004 10:12

Thanks Charliecat, I also feel a bit worried cause I'm on really strong painkillers, anti depressants, antibiotics last week as well as the pill. I'll stop taking them now, but do you think they've caused any damage?

OP posts:
happy1 · 30/07/2004 10:13

Cheers cadbury, I've got a doctors appointment on Monday, but it's unlikely to get a false positive isn't it?

OP posts:
misdee · 30/07/2004 10:17

i think you besr make a docs appt to check about this other medication. just to be safe.

and with regards to what to say to dp, i have no idea. I'm sure he'll be ok with it, tho it may be a bit of a shock at first. lots of hugs and choccies heading your way.

MrsDoolittle · 30/07/2004 10:17

Hugs to you happy1. I had this scare last week and dd is almost 4 months. I hope all goes well

sponge · 30/07/2004 10:20

I wouldn't stop the antibiotics as they don't work unless you finish the course. I've been on antibiotics in early pregnancy before with no ill effects. You might want to stop the painkillers for now if not paracetomol based but as you're seeing the dr on monday you can get advice on all this v soon.
Good luck.

misdee · 30/07/2004 10:22

try not to worry too much. i was perscribed codeine when i was pregnant with dd2, as other painkillers didnt work. they also offered me pethadine (had back problems).

Katypie · 30/07/2004 10:26

What kind of antibiotics are they?

happy1 · 30/07/2004 10:26

Thanks everyone, I actually finished the antibiotics yesterday. I haven't taken any painkillers or the pill today. I will wait to see the doctor on Monday.

OP posts:
happy1 · 30/07/2004 10:27

They were amoxycillin.
