dd has been out of hosiptal for nearly a week after 3 stays in 2 weeks. her chest was clear friday as were her allergyy tests, but now she has a cold and is wheezy, coughing lots and gasping a bit. should i just give her ten puffs of ventolin or should i call the dr??? i don't want to be an over fussy mum but i am paranoid that she will have a nasty attack again. she has had 3 courses of perdnisolone steroids in the last 3 weeks, what else can they do?

give her 10 puffs, if that doesnt work call the GP

WelshBoris · 22/04/2007 20:10

Ten puffs of ventolin always.

Then review in 15 mins and call GP if needs must

WelshBoris · 22/04/2007 20:11

Even if she end up going to GPs the 10 puffs will make the journey a little more comfortable as her airwaves will be more open.

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 20:11

thank you ladies. i just don't want to be running down there every 5 minutes, will keep you up to date x

oh does she have a preventer as well?

WelshBoris · 22/04/2007 20:12

DD is on a preventer now, ask them about becotide or something similar

scienceteacher · 22/04/2007 20:12

I don't think you can really overdose on Ventolin considering what they give you in hospital. However, if you can't give your LO 2 hours' relief, you should definitely consider taking her to A&E.

misdee · 22/04/2007 20:15

what we do

2puffs, wait 5minutes if not too bad
another 2 puffs, wait again
2more
if no relief then go to 1 per minute, after 5 minutes if no releif either get to GP's or a+e for them to review.

when i feel dd1 is getting a cold/chesty, then the doc has agreed we can double her becotide for the duration then drop back down.

WelshBoris · 22/04/2007 20:18

At the moment DD is on becotide morning and night and I give her ventolin aswell. The last attack was so bad I don't know what else to do.

It's nearly summer though so I doubt she will be bad during the warmer months.

Let us know Allie my lovely

scienceteacher · 22/04/2007 20:19

My GP has sanctioned double becotide when DD has a cold, but his does nothing for an acute attack. If she does have to go to hosptal, at least she has something in the tank.

alibobins · 22/04/2007 20:22

When on phone to 999 with DS they said ten puffs every five minutes but they arrived quicker than that anyway.

DS has been wheezy today he had to go on nebuliser before bed Have you got one?

Hope she feels better soon its horrible when they are ill.

emkana · 22/04/2007 20:24

I was told by the respiratory nurse at Bristol Children's Hospital that doubling up on Becotide had no proven benefit.

What to believe... I don't know.

alibobins, is your ds still on the azithromycin? Ds is, but he is just starting to get wheezy again as well...

pointydog · 22/04/2007 20:25

As science says, we double becotide when dd2 has a cold and give couple of ventolin puffs before bed.

If attack seems to be coming on, we give 10 puffs, wait 10-15 mins another 10 puffs, if no improvement then doctor

scienceteacher · 22/04/2007 20:26

One capsule of ventolin has 200 puffs, so 10 puffs only gives you 20 goes.

Don't hesitate to go to hospital. Having taken DD there maybe a dozen times, and having her in resuss, and then high dependency, it is worth it.

There's nothing like arriving in A&E with an unconcious child to put everything into perspective.

alibobins · 22/04/2007 20:31

emkana Yeah he is it seemed to work after a week or so but he has struggled through these last few days We are at hosp again next month not sure what else they can do he is on the full works.

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 20:31

she has 10 puffs 15 mins ago and is not much better. she is on 2 puffs of becotide 100 per day which she has had. I'm going to call the dr

OP posts:
pointydog · 22/04/2007 20:32

yep, do

alibobins · 22/04/2007 20:33

Poor dd

misdee · 22/04/2007 20:37

poor dd

scienceteacher · 22/04/2007 20:39

becotide doesn't help during an attack

emkana · 22/04/2007 20:41

poor dd, allieBongo, hope she feels better soon.

alibobbins, I'm wondering where we're going next as well, ds is on the full works but still ...

What investigations have they done with your ds? Have you had a bronchoscopy done?

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 20:42

just called the dr, we are on our way down to out of hours clinic thank you for all your help lovely ladies x

WelshBoris · 22/04/2007 20:43

pointydog · 22/04/2007 20:45

all the best

alibobins · 22/04/2007 20:49

emkana- He's had a water soluble meal to check for reflux and something to do with the windpipe. He has had blood tests for intolerances and allergies but we know about his allergies and numerous chest x-ray that always say the same that he has got foggy lungs
He has got small twitchy airways.
I thought your ds was doing well its so frustrating.
