dd has been out of hosiptal for nearly a week after 3 stays in 2 weeks. her chest was clear friday as were her allergyy tests, but now she has a cold and is wheezy, coughing lots and gasping a bit. should i just give her ten puffs of ventolin or should i call the dr??? i don't want to be an over fussy mum but i am paranoid that she will have a nasty attack again. she has had 3 courses of perdnisolone steroids in the last 3 weeks, what else can they do?

Ds was doing well but unfortunately things have been going downhill over the last few weeks.

alibobins · 22/04/2007 20:57

Has hospital given you any reason why he is like this. Does your ds have any side effects from his meds Ds seems really lethargic the day after so like a tues thurs and sat.

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 21:00

bloody dr's on call just called back to say no one will be at the clinic for another 90mins, so we can go the the other dr 18 miles away she has calmed down a little now after another 6 puffs. if she gets any worse i will just call an ambulance.

alibobins · 22/04/2007 21:06

That really bad
Don't hesitate to phone 999 if you have to
How old is she? is she able to talk to you?
Have you got any predisolone in the house gp lets me keep some at home for when ds has an attack.

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 21:09

she is 2. i have just given her another 10 puffs and she is calm. will just check on her every 5 mins, but she is nearly asleep now.

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 21:09

i have pred but she has had 3 5 day courses in the last 3 week so they are not keen for her to have more

OP posts:
3littlefrogs · 22/04/2007 21:10

How is her colour? Are her lips and tongue pink? any hint of duskiness or blue around lips and you should get her to hospital. Is her chest pulling in? I am just worried about what you mean when you say she is calming down, is she looking better or is she exhausted? Can she talk to you?

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 21:11

she is knackered, i just went in and she said "morning" her tummy is pulling in a little, she has very red cheeks, but is breathing more normally

3littlefrogs · 22/04/2007 21:11

sorry X posts - it sounds as if the ventolin is helping.

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 21:13

lets hope so. thanks for your concern

OP posts:
alibobins · 22/04/2007 21:13

If you are really worried a one off dose would calm her down until you can get her seen. Ds is 2 aswell

How many prednisolone was she on and did they up all her medication.

scienceteacher · 22/04/2007 21:13

Please stay vigilant with her and don't hesitate to take her into hospital.

It would never be the wrong decision.

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 21:15

4 tabs daily for 5 days. 3 courses over 3 weeks

I had a home nebuliser when ds2 was little. May be that is something you could discuss with your consultant. One terrifying trip to use the nebiliser at the GP surgery was enough for me. I was on my own with the boys so much, and just 2 years between them, I was glad to have it in the house - it was reassuring, even though i rarely had to use it.

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 21:16

i am tempted tbh. it wore off after 15 mins last time though

OP posts:
alibobins · 22/04/2007 21:18

Can't believe the allergy tests came back clear what did they test for. Something must be triggering it

What medication is she on at mo? are you under a consultant at the hosp?
Hope she carries on improving

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 21:20

they tested her for tree pollen, cats and dust mites. she has scratched her body to bits since last night. i just counted her breathing and it was 29 times in a minute which is better than it was

OP posts:
alibobins · 22/04/2007 21:22

That sounds better. Ds has been wheezy too and its been humid today where we are so maybe it could be that. Fingers crossed she is settling down

3littlefrogs · 22/04/2007 21:23

Have you given her some antihistamine? Ventolin will not calm the allergic reaction.
Ds2 was allergic to grass, pollen, trees, feathers - all of which were negative when he was allergy tested, but he reacted to instantly whenever he came into contact with them in real life. He took regular antihistamines for about 4 years and now he is 15 he doesn't need them, and only rarely needs his inhaler.

allieBongo · 22/04/2007 21:45

it has slowed down to 24 times per min. the dr just called and said no one will be there until midnight so we either have to go to bury gp or a and e which are at the same place. she seems much better so we are going to set the alarm thru the night and watch her

OP posts:
allieBongo · 23/04/2007 10:25

we eventually saw an emergency dr at 6.30 this morning who just doled out some mor eprednisolone. No neb etc. I dosed her up on ventolin until my surgery opened at 8.30. They have lent me a nebuliser, have prescribed some singulair, as due to her age she cannot have anything else, and this means we can stay at home If i have to use the neb more than 4 hourly we have to go to a and e, so fingers crossed for us. Thanks again for all your help and support

Do ask about some antihistamine meds. Ds2 was terrubly allergic to the pollen from elder trees - small white clumps of blossom, black berries - there was one outside his window and I didn't realise and left the window open a little one night as it was warm - in MAY. When I went in at 6am he was barely breathing - he was two and a half. I was really, really scared, he was on the nebuliser for about an hour before I dared move him. The gp prescribed antihistamines and he was never as bad again. We chopped all the overhanging branches off, but the tree belonged to the neighbour, so we couldn't get rid of it completely.

allieBongo · 23/04/2007 10:51

i will ask again. she didn't react to the tree pollen test on friday, but she has scratched herself to bits

OP posts:
3littlefrogs · 23/04/2007 11:02

It seems too much of a coincidence that she has been scratching like mad and wheezy. Sometimes you never get to the bottom of what they are allergic to. Ds2 had the skin testing - he tested positive for tree pollen - this was years after his very bad reaction so we knew that. He tested negative for everything else, but had a terrible reaction to a feather duvet when sleeping over at a friend's house. Ds1 had a feather filled puffa jacket - when they were fashionable - ds2 put it on one day and was coughing and spluttering within minutes. that was good enough for me, and we banned feathers from the house. He had some antihistamine medicine - name escapes me completely - daily from May to september for about 4 years and it transformed our lives.
