Worst episode yet.

Thursday morning she woke up wheezy, got gradually worse so I took her to casualty in a taxi. She was bad but started getting worse. Sat in childrens waiting room with her in my arms, I hadn't rang Nigel or my mum because I didn't think it was that serious. She needed a nappy change so I took her to the toilets, as I walking through the corridor a nurse saw her in my arms and took her off me.

Whisked her into a room, the next thing I knew the room was filled with doctors, nurses and a crash team

Felt like someone had ripped out my heart and laid it on the table.

They did their magic, filled her with drugs and took her to the High dependancy unit of the childrens ward. Whilst there they called the crash team again, but luckily for DD they managed to ease her breathing before they had to take her to theatre.

Stayd in HDU until last night but we are now home

A bad asthama attack + a chest infection = most terrifying day of my life.

We hate hospitals, but the nurses and doctors were amazing and made a very shitty few days bearable.

WelshBoris · 25/03/2007 16:52

Becotide Misdee, they lowered the dose when we saw the consultant only last week but have upped it again.

Am shattered and she is covered in holes because she had so many IVs in her.

Sorry to read this Boris. It's absolutely gut wrenching when they are so sick that all you can do stand back and let then do their work.

Glad you are home again and roll on Spring!

Carmenere · 25/03/2007 16:52

Ventolin for emergencies, I tried that on her on Thursday morning but to no effect.

I cant wait for the warmer monthes either, seeing her little body lying on the hospital bed makes me want to rip out my lungs and give them to her

Nbg · 25/03/2007 17:01

Awww WB, how scary!

Asthmas bloody rotten.

misdee · 25/03/2007 17:02

right ok WB, this is not a 'go' at you but mre for the care you have received regarding asthma.

dd1 has moderate asthma. she is currently on 8 puffs of becotide 200mg a day (her asthma is bad right now, also getting over chest infection) and will be lowered down to 4 puffs over the next few weeks. she has access to her ventolin pump at all times, atm she is using it a lot, she had over 20puffs yersterday which is less than the previous two days. on a normal day she will have 2 puffs of ventolin in the morning, 2 before bed plus 2 before any exercise.

when she has an attack, we do a lot of series of puffs, 2 puffs, if no relief after 5mins then another 2, repeat again, then onto 1 puff a minute. if no relief after 5x1puff then dial 99/docs for a neb. she has had two nebs this winter, one of which she alos got hospitalised after as it wasnt that effective. fortunatly 5mins after she was fine albeit tired.

i feel so sorry for you going through this, and hope you find a suitable treatment soon. how old is babyboris again?

SherlockLGJ · 25/03/2007 17:03

Aw Welshy....

The air is very pure in Surrey, if you want to come for the weekend you are welcome.

Mercy · 25/03/2007 17:04

How awful

Something similar happened to me when I was 20 weeks pg. I've never been so scared in my life (or felt so ill tbh).

Does your dd have a spacer?

Mercy · 25/03/2007 17:08

Misdee, yes I wondered about the advice too. My db has had moderate asthma since a baby, and since the age of about 2 was on salbutamol (Ventolin) daily from , not just emergencies.

PeachyClair · 25/03/2007 17:09

Oh Welshy

Bug hugs to you and babyboris

Tatties · 25/03/2007 17:09

Sorry to hear this. How awful for you, sounds like a terrifying experience Hope you are all feeling normal again soon

Overrun · 25/03/2007 17:11

Really sorry to hear that WB, she is really going through it atm. You may or may not remember that two of my dss have Asthma too. I have been told I can give as many as 10 puffs of Ventolin if Asthma is bad, as that is a nebuliser dose? Is this the advice that you received?
Also I can't remember how old your dd is. My ds1 had an inhaler called Serevent when he turned 3. It is supposed to be given to over 4's, but they felt it was appropriate in his case.
It seems like as fantastic as the hopsital staff are, that maybe your day to day medical advice (gp or Asthma nurse) might be being a little reactive about what treatment they offer you dd. If they could get her Asthma controlled better then she might be able to fight chest infections better, and not have these frightening episodes.
Do you feel happy with the adive that you are being given? Is she under a peadatrician?
