Another hospital stay for BabyBoris

Worst episode yet.

Thursday morning she woke up wheezy, got gradually worse so I took her to casualty in a taxi. She was bad but started getting worse. Sat in childrens waiting room with her in my arms, I hadn't rang Nigel or my mum because I didn't think it was that serious. She needed a nappy change so I took her to the toilets, as I walking through the corridor a nurse saw her in my arms and took her off me.

Whisked her into a room, the next thing I knew the room was filled with doctors, nurses and a crash team

Felt like someone had ripped out my heart and laid it on the table.

They did their magic, filled her with drugs and took her to the High dependancy unit of the childrens ward. Whilst there they called the crash team again, but luckily for DD they managed to ease her breathing before they had to take her to theatre.

Stayd in HDU until last night but we are now home

A bad asthama attack + a chest infection = most terrifying day of my life.

We hate hospitals, but the nurses and doctors were amazing and made a very shitty few days bearable.

Kbear · 25/03/2007 18:33

sounds terrifying - hope she's better soon.

allieBongo · 25/03/2007 18:37

i don't blame you mate, I am tempted as dd gets so bad every time she gets a cough and at least you can use in the comfort of you own home. Hopefully the warmer weather that we should be getting will help stop the bad attacks and the becotide will keep her strong for next winter. Let me know if you need any long distance help

PrincessPeaHead · 25/03/2007 18:37

oh I've just seen this welshy, I'm so sorry. sounds so scary, poor little thing xxx

alibobins · 25/03/2007 18:38

Sorry to hear dd was poorly

just to let you know my doctors suggested we got a nebuliser last year for my ds he is now 2.3 they even got money off so it cost around £60 but like you said money doesn't really matter. they also prescribed 100 of the little salbutamol nebules that go in it.

We have used it maybe 10 times over the last year but use it as a last resort.

allieBongo · 25/03/2007 18:39

that is cheaper than I thought.

alibobins · 25/03/2007 18:44

They are good but its only powered by air so it doesn't seem to clear him as much as at the hospital.

It has kept us at home a few times so its well worth the money.

allieBongo · 25/03/2007 18:45

glad to hear that. my dd legs it all over the place, i suppose if you can sit her them in front of a dvd then you may contain the little blighters!

Boco · 25/03/2007 18:56

Sorry to hear about babyboris' attack - how scary for you both. I've got 2 little asthmatics, and have it myself too.

I got really frustrated with the treatment they were both getting as it wasn't controlling their asthma about a year ago. I found the asthma helpline so helpful - all asthma nurses, they told me about the options, and it just gave me some extra information to take to the doctor to get it sorted.

The good news is my 4 year old seems to be totally growing out of it - she was so ill for the first 3 years, constant asthma and chest infections - but she's been totally without medication for 6 months. Hope it's the same for your little one

WideWebWitch · 25/03/2007 19:01

God how scary Wb, poor you and dd.

foxinsocks · 25/03/2007 19:06

poor you and mini Boris.

and how annoying for this to happen just as her dose was lowered!

hope the consultant and asthma nurse can sort things out

Marina · 25/03/2007 19:07

how scary .. glad she's better

I have to say the nurses who man the helplines at Asthma UK are extremely helpful and if I were you I'd just call them up and run through it all with them .. they can give you advice / best practice you can then run through with your GP / Surgery Asthma Nurse

they really are specialists because this is all they deal with all day whereas the asthma nurse will be the surgery nurse with the special position of also dealing with the asthma patients

Twiglett · 25/03/2007 19:20

asthma UK

Pidge · 25/03/2007 19:36

welshboris - you poor thing - I hope you're getting good support and treatment and that your dd is on the mend. I have asthma myself, but I think in many ways it's worse for the people watching when you have a bad attack. Was about to post the same link to Asthma Uk, but Twiglett beat me to it - they are amazing and have lots of useful information, plus a helpline with asthma specialist nurses to help you with any questions about treatment etc.

Boco · 25/03/2007 19:38

twiglett that's who i spoke to and found it really helpful

PinkChick · 25/03/2007 19:40

dear lord, poor child and poor you..glad all is better now, but how frightning, if you handnt got up at that moment to change her

misdee · 25/03/2007 19:40

yes and when she starts school ask if the school has dealt with asthma uk as well. dd1 school missed an asthma attack dd1 was having, they have now contacted asthma uk and have been great.

MoreTeaVicar · 25/03/2007 19:41

So sorry for what you have both been through. I hope your little one is feeling better, you too.

emkana · 25/03/2007 19:47

I am so sorry you had to go through this, how awful.

Ds has had chest problems since birth, and has gradually been put on more and more medication - Ventolin, Atrovent, Becotide, Singulair (Montelukast) - nothing helped.

Since January he has been on continuous antibiotics - azithromycin, 2.5 ml three times a week. Since then he has been soooooooooooooooo much better. Don't know if it might be worth mentioning to your consultant?

WelshBoris · 25/03/2007 19:52

Thanks for your messages girls, I have had some really good advice today.

I put that in my favourites earlier Twig great minds eh?

My heart goes out to you WB.
My little brother was rushed in regularly when he was young - just as you describe, Heart stopping for a parent, and the enaxiety spread all through the family. It's a lot for you to cope with.

Hold tight - they will get her doses under control, and in the longer term...well my brother is quite the athlete and no longer suffers. May BabyBoris grow out of this really soon.

WelshBoris · 25/03/2007 19:58

Thank you Blu.
