Another hospital stay for BabyBoris

Worst episode yet.

Thursday morning she woke up wheezy, got gradually worse so I took her to casualty in a taxi. She was bad but started getting worse. Sat in childrens waiting room with her in my arms, I hadn't rang Nigel or my mum because I didn't think it was that serious. She needed a nappy change so I took her to the toilets, as I walking through the corridor a nurse saw her in my arms and took her off me.

Whisked her into a room, the next thing I knew the room was filled with doctors, nurses and a crash team

Felt like someone had ripped out my heart and laid it on the table.

They did their magic, filled her with drugs and took her to the High dependancy unit of the childrens ward. Whilst there they called the crash team again, but luckily for DD they managed to ease her breathing before they had to take her to theatre.

Stayd in HDU until last night but we are now home

A bad asthama attack + a chest infection = most terrifying day of my life.

We hate hospitals, but the nurses and doctors were amazing and made a very shitty few days bearable.

mercy exactly, its like a combination thing. and the becotide takes a while to build up as well.

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 17:12

I'll give out hugs if I bloody want to, Fish {{{Cod}}}

WelshBoris · 25/03/2007 17:12

Thanks, Misdee she is 2 1/2.

I am seeing our asthma nurse next week so will ask her about using ventolin more. It sounds as if it is working for your DD.

She had nebs when she was in, and a course of steroids. They have told me to finish the course of antibiotics and give ventolin 2 puffs every 4 hours for another 2 days

Thanks overrun.

She is seeing her nurse next week and her consultant in May. I am going to push to have her meds changed though, the becotide is obviously not making an impact.

Thanks for the offer LGJ.

have you got a spacer?

lloys chemists sell nebulisers now you know. just fyi

does she have a preventer (steroid) - or is she considered too young?

misdee · 25/03/2007 17:14

oh bless her so small

her asthma really needs to be under control and it seems it isnt as she has been i na lot lately hasnt she? dd1 was under 1 when she had her first attack, 2.5 for her second bad on then none really till last year at age 6. (but has been on ventolin and becotide since 18months after breifly trying a different one that was useless)

misdee · 25/03/2007 17:15

imnotcusty becotide is preventer, ventolin is reliever

WelshBoris · 25/03/2007 17:18

-Yes she has a spacer.

-I may invest in a neb, she responds well to them when in hospital

-Yes Misdee, she was fine until she was 1 now she has had 8/9 hospital visits in the last year. All of at least 3 nights

I agree with Misdee, a spacer is a good idea, if she doesn't have one. Also, has any one mentioned montelukast? It didn't do anything for my lot, but some people rave about it.
From what you said it was sparked off by a chest infection. But it might be worth considering whether she is reacting to tree pollen which is around by March. I start reacting at this time of year, and I think all three of my dss seem to be as well.
I keep being told that South Wales is really bad for Asthma Although it should be better your way.
Did she have the flu jab? If not, and you are not against such things, I would get her done next year. My boys have it

allieBongo · 25/03/2007 17:24

poor boris's . Glad she's on the mend. How much is a neb? They do the job.

WelshBoris · 25/03/2007 17:28

Don't know how much Allie but don't really care.

She cant go through that again.

I have thought about buying a nebuliser as well, but as I said earlier, 10 puffs of ventolin one after another is the same as being nebulised according to the nurses who saw my ds. So thats what I do, and it works pretty well. YOu just do the puff as you would normally, leaving a gap of 1 minute. It takes a while, but does seem to get results

MarsLady · 25/03/2007 17:33

Boris my darling!!!!!! Know you have my love and prayers!

NuttyMuffins · 25/03/2007 17:34

I think geting a neb is a great idea, always wish i'd had one when dd2 was little and was in and out of hospital.

Also agree that she needs ventolin too, odd that they have never given her any, i was always given loads, it was the becotide i had to fight for.

Hugs to you and dd, hope she is better soon.

NuttyMuffins · 25/03/2007 17:35

I was always advised to give 10 puffs of ventolin if dd was bad too, but tbh it never worked abywhere near aswell as the neb.

dither · 25/03/2007 17:36

no experience of asthma (lucky me) , so no useful advice or owt, but poor you and bb... glad shes feeling a bit better now, and hope the docs find a way to manage it all better soon
(is nappiesgalore btw)

cerys · 25/03/2007 17:59

Hi WB, sorry to hear she has been back in hospital. Sounds v scary. I know you have a big supportive family but I am not far away if I can ever help out.

DANCESwithaTruckLoadOfMiniEggs · 25/03/2007 18:04

Sorry to hear this wb, poor little mite. Hope the asthma nurse can give you some good advice.

Greenshoots · 25/03/2007 18:07

Oh no Boris, I'm so sorry this has happened. You must have been beside yourself with fear, I can only imagine how bad it was. Give her a cuddle from me, and here's one for you too ((((((((((((((((((welshy)))))))))))))))

Keep us posted sweetheart.

berolina · 25/03/2007 18:13

I'm so sorry Boris - poor little lamb it must have been terrifying.

I had moderate-to-severe asthma as a child (well, actually until I was about 25 or so, but it's all but disappeared now) and regularly had to have quite a lot of Ventolin. I think even fairly high doses are very safe. Becotide worked well for me for a while, but the last thing I was on - something called Symbicort - a preventer and reliever in one - might be worth trying. It worked well and now I'm on nothing. Of course I don't know whether it's recommended for use in chldren, but you could ask about it maybe?

berolina · 25/03/2007 18:14

(hello greeny, thank you for comment on other thread yest )

Pixiefish · 25/03/2007 18:16
