"Something pithy about purple sprouting broccoli" - 10 / 10 club - All Welcome

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and more detailed information here

Thanks for the title, Overrun

We had a big stir fry including purple sprouting broccoli and it was gorgeous, but my word we were trumping afterwards Not sure if it was the broccoli or not but I have my suspicions...

Hope everyone is feeling well / better / not actually on their death beds right now. I am determined to make a dent on our satsuma mountain today so will report back later.

I shall try and join in, don't know what you do but as it is a new thread I shall pick it up.

I have got started on the exercise the last few weeks but I really find it a chore.

And why is it dificult to eat fruit and veg..I used to be much more able to think about it but have got lazy.

ps franny you are my role model

FrannyandZooey · 05/03/2007 09:22

Hi Zippi, cod summed it up for us the other week "so you eat fruit and go for a walk and talk about it"

Just join in, we tend to talk bollocks quite a lot but also try to support one another in our efforts to eat more heathily and be more active

"ps franny you are my role model"

ps zippi you are having a larf

Ah shucks Franny
I'm hoping for some in my veg box tomorrow. Well we are confined to the house pretty much as we are poxed. At least this will give me time to make a mama squash soup this morning for lunch.
So far tangerine juice, and blueberry cereal. Might try and do a dvd of aerobics to entertain the dcs, but expect there will be an outcry in favour of "Po Pat" or "Bob uilder". Maybe some steps up then? i will report back.
Welcome Zippi, if I may call you that

Tatties · 05/03/2007 11:41

Morning all

So far this morning I have had dates, banana and prune juice . Oh and a walk to the post office mainly carrying ds

May ask for your thoughts on how to deal with a mealtime issue later...

Overrun · 05/03/2007 11:53

HI Tatties,
I had a really nice lunch today, brimming with squashy goodness, but it did have cream in it. Its a jamie recipe, you roast the squash with some spices like crushed corriander seeds/cumin and then when soft, you add cream and nutmeg and parmesan cheese. I have never done it like that before, so thought I would mention it for any of you that love Squash as much as I do.
Also an apple for afters.
Tatties, I am having a bit of a dilemma with ds1 with re to mealtimes. We had just introduced a toughter policy with him, in order to make him eat his veg, and now he has chicken pox, it feels mean to be so strict. But know from experience that once you let it slide, its a problem (talk about bad timing, as he had really made some improvements)

zippitippitoes · 05/03/2007 14:36

I have been to the gym and done a considerable swatch of exercise but rather puny on the fruit and vewg front namely a iinnocent smoothies and a bowl of muesli

not sure how that will get sorted before the end of the day as we have no fresh fruit or veg in but it is our shopping day

Greensleeves · 05/03/2007 14:43

Hi all, have not done brilliantly yet today (have had broccoli and cauliflower soup for lunch and an apple and some raisins, but feeling a tad off-colour so not inclined to do much else

Exercise Schmexercise, although I did do a "songs with actions" session with the boys after lunch though which was surprisingly tiring (because I am a blob). And have been at toddler group with ds2 which involved a certain amount of charging about and lifting stuff (kids mainly)

Have made soup for this evening - cooked and pureed red cabbage, onions, parsnips and kidney beans and tomatoes, and will add whole kidney beans before serving. The kids will be having sweet potato and jerusalem artichoke roasted wedges with theirs. I might have a banana a bit later.

Tatties, your lunch sounds seriously delicious . I am trying to avoid dairy atm, but almost weakened when I was making the kids' lunch (tortillas stuffed with cheese, red pesto, salad leaves and red kidney beans, then folded into quarters, brushed with olive oil and topped with a bit of cheese/basil and grilled until crispy on top and squidgy inside). It looked SO much nicer than my bowl of off-green sludge.

TooTicky · 05/03/2007 14:48

Greensleeves my children will not eat beans if they are remotely bean-shaped!! Even whizzed ds1 can detect them...

TooTicky · 05/03/2007 14:49

I mean the beans are whizzed, not ds1

Greensleeves · 05/03/2007 14:49

pmsl

Tatties · 05/03/2007 15:00

Greeny, I think you are giving me the credit for Overrun's lunch, which does sound delicious And your food today sounds lovely, ds loves beans. But he doesn't really do wraps or sandwiches... just kind of pulls them apart.

I am feeling a bit yucky too... I have been having this feeling-crap-after-lunch-thing for a couple of weeks now

Greensleeves · 05/03/2007 15:01

Oh yes, sorry, Overrun's lunch

I am starving, if truth be told. I keep having obscene cravings for real crap like Wagon Wheelse and chips with mayo. I am not giving in to them though, yet....

Overrun · 05/03/2007 16:20

lol, yes lunch was nice but dcs didn't like it, I thought it would be up the dts alley (as they tend to like veggies) but I think I spiced it a bit too much.
Well done for being disciplined Greensleeves, I was round at my Mums house this afternoon, and dug into some biscuits and just generally raided their fridge

StrangeTown · 05/03/2007 18:16

Greeny and Overrun are swots again. I've had OK day too. Banana, half a melon, half a cucumber, tomato, avacado, berries.
I weighed myself last week when I was working away and I have lost half a stone! I don't know when exactly as we don't have scales, but my tummer is definitely flatter again, which I am assuming is my improved digestion. Cellulite (TMI, I kmow) is gone too Hope it lasts...

StrangeTown · 05/03/2007 18:16

Can't spell today...

StrangeTown · 05/03/2007 18:17

Sorry for the Cod post, off to play netball and in a bit of a hurry.

alittlebitshy · 05/03/2007 18:26

hmm... i've always looked at your threads in awe (i think they started when i was trying to lose weight so i didn't fancy another factor to work into my food calculations, even though it is healthy...). Now the weight is off (though a bit has crept back on ) so....

Not sure about the excercise. I did more before dd started school nursery in January cos i walked everywhere (with her in the buggy so extra toning going on...) but i'll need to think about how to work it in now.

on the f&v side though:
cucumber in my sarnie (poss not a whole portion?!
grapes
banana
does onion count cos if so there was some in my couscous (yummy recipe from my sil) and i know it's unlikely but some sundreid tomatoes too
asparagus tips
fine beans
sugar snap peas
mango

maybe i'll have some more fruit later. i have a Satsuma Mountain too so that needs working on...

let's see if i manage to keep up and join in

Overrun · 05/03/2007 20:00

Hi alittlebitshy - sounds like a perfectly respectable tally to me
Hi Strange town, nice to hear from you too.
I finished off my squash dish for dinner, along with cabbage/onion/apple mixture and fried field mushrooms (god is there anything nicer than field mushrooms sauted in olive oil or butter?)
Oh did my usual thing of munching on raw carrot while I prepared dinner. Dh and dts had it cooked, but I hate cooked carrot

FrannyandZooey · 05/03/2007 20:29

I think everyone is doing superlatively well and especial welcome to alittlebitshy

I have only managed 4 satsumas, but ds had 3 so the mountain is looking less Everest like

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 05/03/2007 20:31

(Oh I also had apple, 2 pears, banana, 2 plums, baked beans for lunch and lentil, swede, carrot and parsnip soup for tea.)

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 05/03/2007 20:41

I started the thread about ds weaning , btw

but expect everyone is too busy gawping at SWMNBN on telly

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone on this thread who talked me through it as I wasn't feeling brave enough to talk about it on the site in general, before

OP posts:
StrangeTown · 05/03/2007 20:43

Hello Littlebitshy - welcome. You sound like you know what you are doing already .
Zippi - how did you get on today? Has Franny officially got you into the cult?

I realised how much DH corrupts my daily life - I am so much more organised and healthy without him. No washing mountain, clothes ready for tomorrow, healthy dinner consumed and fruit prepped for snacks at work. I feel very relaxed and a little bit swotty myself.

Jillyadoodledoo · 05/03/2007 20:44

Please can I join? I get the excercise as I cycle with DS2 to school every day (with DD in a bike trailer), but would like to get encouragement [sp] for the 10/10 stuff. Haven't read all of the thread yet (and am not going to until after THAT telly prog), and was put off by how long the other ones were. But please can I join
