Dangerous ideas about Rhesus negative blood type

lottieandmia · 25/02/2017 17:49

I have heard various people online and in RL expressing the opinion that they feel they are immune to disease because they are Rh neg. I'm here to tell them they're wrong!

These people are probably spreading STIs around because they think they can't get them. Where does this ridiculous idea come from?

I'm b-negative and catch every bloody thing that's out there. Had mumps and chicken pox as a child, and have since had tonsillitis, flu', and some pretty nasty viruses.

So this is news to me Hmm

MrsJayy · 26/02/2017 21:01

Oh b neg that is speshul 😊

youarenotkiddingme · 26/02/2017 21:02

I'm O-. I thought that was the most common blood group?

Ds is A- and his father is A+.

When I was pg with him I had to have an injection because of this.

Whichoneisit · 26/02/2017 21:13

O- here.
Never had chickenpox, measles or any of the common childhood illnesses but I have had Bell's palsy. Mosquitos love me. And I react terribly to their bites. Have a mild peanut intolerance.

TizzyDongue · 26/02/2017 21:18

I actually medical have no reason for not being able to donate (in ireland) my O neg other than living in the UK between 1980 and 1986! Bit annoying really, as I was a regular donator when I did live in the UK!! But hey ho thems the rules.

O-, never had plague to my knowledge. My dd, mum and grandma all o- too, we wonder if it passes down the female line more?

lottieandmia · 26/02/2017 22:40

O+ is the most common blood group

If you're rh neg and your unborn child is rh neg, there is no risk to the baby. But they can't find out baby's blood group until birth. I'm A- and my dd's are two of them O+ and one A+.

OP posts:
TizzyDongue · 26/02/2017 22:53

Not sure what blood type my DCs are. I'd assumed O+, mostly because DH is - the big non alien human weirdo. Can't all be special Fallen Angel Aliens like me.

youarenotkiddingme · 27/02/2017 06:56

Turns out both my parents are O+ and yet I'm O- and that's only a 6% chance!
Ds is A+ and there was a 85% chance he'd be A and 25^ chance he'd be -.

Can you tell this thread interested me to do some research last night? Grin

In my last pregnancy I was in a study where they were researching how early on in pregnancy they could identify the baby's blood group from taking your blood. Don't know what happened to the study afterwards but they could detect my baby's blood group at about 20 weeks. I wasn't allowed to know it until afterwards though, and obviously they didn't rely on it anyway and tested at birth to verify.

youarenotkiddingme · 27/02/2017 18:37

Tbf I went through all my maternity stuff in Spanish! But I had a test called indirect Coombes (or at least that's how it translates!) and from that they determined unneeded an injection at 22 weeks and another after birth.

I'd love to actually fully understand what it meant but even ds dad who's fluent in Spanish couldn't understand the full medical terms so my basics weren't going to cut it Grin

PetalMettle · 27/02/2017 19:23

Ah here they just give it t everyone. I naively asked why they couldn't just test the father so if father was negative you'd know not to give it and mw looked at me like I was simple and said "because we don't know it's definitely the father..."

TheFallenMadonna · 27/02/2017 19:32

Yes, I was told that in my first pregnancy. With my last, in a different area, they believed me. I would have refused it otherwise.

Yeah that's what they said to me when I refused it. I knew my ex was also negative and point blank refused the anti D. Man they were annoyed with me.

hugoagogo · 28/02/2017 07:16

That's weird, I managed to convince the midwives not to give me the anti D because I knew dh was rh- they seemed to trust that he was the father.
I didn't have to argue that hard either.

gamerchick · 28/02/2017 07:34

Yeah I got the 'we can't be sure he's the father' line.

Maybe I look like I fuck about Hmm

gamerchick · 28/02/2017 07:35

Wrong smiley Grin

laurzj82 · 28/02/2017 07:49

I'm am rh neg too. Never heard it before. I am always ill so not true for me!

Possibly, he most certainly wasn't a husband.

Okite · 28/02/2017 13:39

Made no difference to me, I asked my midwife about it (didn't actually know dh's blood group at the time) and she said they never take the chance that the DH/DP is the father just because the results would be so catastrophic if they did and it was wrong.
Turned out my DH was +ve anyway.

cubbiesqueezies · 17/08/2018 20:40

Okay, as a single, Gay man, I would like to set things straight or at least provide some insight perspective on what concepts folks have about Rh- and HIV. If you are curious to know, HIV doesn't have the ability to attach itself to red/white blood cells in RH- but Rh- human beings CAN and WILL be exposed and acquire HIV if contracted. If you would like more information about what is considered "Elite Controllers" please use youtube and see the news packages PBS and NPR have posted over the years about gay men who are "Elite Controllers" . I am HIV negative and will be in a study soon researching the fact that most Elite Controllers who are HIV positive are primarily or strictly RH-. A human vaccine human trials study will be commencing around the country next month as they have found a human being in Thailand that holds some immunity to HIV.
