Dangerous ideas about Rhesus negative blood type

lottieandmia · 25/02/2017 17:49

I have heard various people online and in RL expressing the opinion that they feel they are immune to disease because they are Rh neg. I'm here to tell them they're wrong!

These people are probably spreading STIs around because they think they can't get them. Where does this ridiculous idea come from?

Just signed up to give blood - inspired by this thread as I'm O-

TizzyDongue · 26/02/2017 11:05

I can't give blood - used to though. Its a worthwhile thing to do.

TheFallenMadonna · 26/02/2017 11:11

Both those studies suggest a heterozygote advantage, so worse outcomes for Rh negative.

TheFallenMadonna · 26/02/2017 11:12

I am with handed and Rh negative. I am basically screwed.

TheFallenMadonna · 26/02/2017 11:13

left handed

kel1234 · 26/02/2017 11:20

I'm A- (dh is positive. Our lo is also negative).

Okite · 26/02/2017 11:20

I can't give blood now either due to aforementioned autoimmune problems, but managed 17 donations in my younger years.

atheistmantis · 26/02/2017 11:28

Apparently being rh- means a higher incidence of allergies, especially food allergies.

If you are A you are likely to be fertile for longer and likely to be more prone to stress so in my 60s I'll be pregnant, stressed about it and suffering from allergies made worse by the stress?

lottieandmia · 26/02/2017 12:32

I'm A. That would explain how I got pregnant on 1st cycle every time then(!) although I was in my 20s.

OP posts:
BeyondUnderthinking · 26/02/2017 12:43

I have a 21 day cycle and a plethora of allergies Grin

whatatod0 · 26/02/2017 13:58

OMG - I never knew I was special being O-.
So I have now googled due to this thread and will start giving blood. Can't believe I was so ignorant to this stuff for so many years. Can you give blood if you take medication?

onemouseplace · 26/02/2017 14:08

You'd have to check whatatod0 - I'm O- and can't donate blood due to meds.

This is really interesting - I've had chicken pox and mumps, but generally had a very strong immune system until I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and was put on immunosuppressants. To be honest, I've still got a pretty good immune system despite them.

I'm not sure whether my Mum is rh- or not, but I suspect she might be as I do know she tested immune to TB.

RustyParker · 26/02/2017 16:00

OMG Tizzy The thing I read eons ago about Jesus and the whole B- thing didn't read as racist Shock Don't want anyone thinking I hang out on those type of websites.

lottieandmia · 26/02/2017 16:11

'Hang out' 😂 yeah those sites are full of anti-semites. Awful places! And people who think they are shape shifting lizard people ffs.

OP posts:
TizzyDongue · 26/02/2017 16:45

Donr worry RustyParkerossible its quite possibly that what you read might have been something about the shroud (of somewhere or other) having blood thought to be Jesus' on and that being tested.

But it's been taken and used to show that Jesus couldn't possibly be dark skinned, and definitely, definitely not connected to Africa and was blond and blue eyed.

Also I wouldn't be concerned that people think you were reading it or hanging out on the sites, especially as I just did (skim) read a page on such a site. It's quite obviously bat shit.

TizzyDongue · 26/02/2017 16:47

Oh and that he wasn't Jewish either. Or something, I admit I gave up at that pount so can't figure our why.

AngelaLondon1234 · 26/02/2017 16:55

'Studies show that the 15% of humans who lack the rhesus factor are gifted with natural resistance to HIV, small pox and bubonic plague. By being resistant to these diseases, it means that they are less susceptible to suffer from them as opposed to those with the Rhesus factor'

RustyParker · 26/02/2017 17:04

Thanks for that Tizzy and yes I think it might have been about the Shroud of Turin but what I read made no reference to the ethnicity of the person whose blood was on there.

Batshit indeed!

lottieandmia · 26/02/2017 18:40

Where does that quote come from Angela?

OP posts:
TheFallenMadonna · 26/02/2017 19:58

That quote is from a website called Thrombocyte.com.

"About us
Thrombocyte.com is a website where you can find interesting information about platelets as well as a service that offers directory listing opportunity for blood testing laboratories. It is also a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com."

It's not a peer review journal...

MrsJayy · 26/02/2017 20:07

I cant give blood i had a few blood transfusions pre whatever date it is , dh is rehsus positive he always donates his mum was negative he was born 33 weeks early in 71 before antid reached the UK

lottieandmia · 26/02/2017 20:14

'It's not a peer review journal...'

How unsurprising. 😂

OP posts:
digerd · 26/02/2017 20:35

I remember feeling lucky when I did not need the TB injection as many who did , suffered with infected boils on their arm. My 2 siblings were not immune, but I did have other illnesses they didn't.
Also had an x-ray to see if there were signs I''d had TB but DM said there were none.

MrsJayy · 26/02/2017 20:44

My uncle had Tb we all got xrays apparently. Kids dont get the BCG anymore do they my eldest is 24 she didnt get it

Hushabyelullaby · 26/02/2017 20:53

I'm Rh- and I've never heard of it either, I've had every childhood illness and now live with MS. What a ridiculous thought it is, I really hope this isn't a commonly held belief Shock
