Dangerous ideas about Rhesus negative blood type

lottieandmia · 25/02/2017 17:49

I have heard various people online and in RL expressing the opinion that they feel they are immune to disease because they are Rh neg. I'm here to tell them they're wrong!

These people are probably spreading STIs around because they think they can't get them. Where does this ridiculous idea come from?

No yersinia pestis here either!

BeyondUnderthinking · 25/02/2017 19:54

Okrite, I also have a handful of AI conditions 😂

SquedgieBeckenheim · 25/02/2017 19:58

I'm Rh- and never heard this! I do tend towards a strong immune system and don't catch a lot of what goes around, but I put that down to luck!
DH and DD are also Rh-, DD still catches everything at nursery!

hugoagogo · 25/02/2017 19:59

I'm rh- and it hasn't saved me from much as far as I can tell.
I did carefully select my dh so he is rh- too meaning I did not have to suffer the dreaded anti whatsit jab Grin

ArriettyClock1 · 25/02/2017 20:03

What? I am rh- and have never heard anything of the sort.

I am pretty robust and am rarely unwell - but that applies pretty much everyone I know, regardless of blood group.

MrTumblesbitch · 25/02/2017 20:03

Where have you heard about all these people thinking they are immortal and going around spreading diseases? Because in the nicest possible way, surely they are a teeeeeeny minority (give that being rh- isn't common in first place, lots of people don't know their bloody type anyway, and you must be pretty daft to think this could be the case......)

That all said. I want a cape. I am rhesus negative girl! (said in best superhero voice!)

lottieandmia · 25/02/2017 20:06

It just worries me that a bunch of people are going around thinking they are immune to HIV, not using condoms and spreading all sorts.

In the UK it's more common to be rh negative than in other parts of the world. When I was pregnant with dd1 I lived in Wales and the midwife told me a lot of women were rh neg in that area (Cardiff).

I do think it's very strange that your body has a massive glitch where it can try to destroy the child you're carrying.

Never heard of that nonsense ,although my gran had 2 babies who died with suspected rhesus disease sadly

digerd · 25/02/2017 20:13

I am O negative and I was immune to the TB tests at school at 6 years and then again at 14.. I never had measles but had German measles many times.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 25/02/2017 20:22

I'm not only rh- but have had chicken pox three times! I feel cheated.

WindwardCircle · 25/02/2017 20:22

I'm rhesus neg, average immune system, had all the childhood illnesses apart from measles, also had viral meningitis. I can't say I've ever heard this theory, or that it holds true for me but saying that I've never had plague and am not HIV +.

NickMyLipple · 25/02/2017 20:26

If a woman has had a anti-d injection with her first pregnancy, is the risk of resus disease in the second baby almost totally eliminated?

CantstandmLMs · 25/02/2017 20:27

Never heard that. I'm rhesus negative and feel I'm not immune to bloody anything Sad

BankWadger · 25/02/2017 20:31

Well that's just stupid. Everybody knows if you're rh- it means you're a lizard person.

MrsJayy · 25/02/2017 20:32

Oh i am immune to TB as well I didn't get the pock mark on my arm like everbody else in my year felt left out

MrsJayy · 25/02/2017 20:33

Yes I think so nick

TizzyDongue · 25/02/2017 20:36

Hmmm never knew I was an immortal lizard person. Well everyday is a school day!!!

Can I fly?

MayhemandMadness01 · 25/02/2017 20:38

A Rh- here. I haven't heard this before but I want a wonder woman costume now, always knew I was more than a mere mortal Grin

BankWadger · 25/02/2017 20:39

Ok that's David Ike's batshittery theory anyway.

I've just had a realised that my Grandma was probably rh- She had sevwral miscarriages before succesfully having my father. If the first mc was a rh+ baby miscarried she still would have made antibodies which caused other rh+ babies to miscarry. Dad is rh- so wouldn't have been affected.

She's long dead and medical knowledge was very different over 60 years ago so I can never be sure, but it does fit.

I'm rh- too as are at least 1 of my sister's and both my children. We've all had chicken pox and my sister measles.

RustyParker · 25/02/2017 20:41

I've come across this in random, crazy corners of the internet too OP. I even read something which claimed Jesus was B- but for the life of me I can't remember the reasoning why!

I'm Rh- and didn't get the pock mark on my arm after the TB jab either. OMG, I could be The Second Coming Shock

woodhill · 25/02/2017 20:44

Rh neg here too but have had mumps and chicken pox. Only thought about it when I needed the D injection after dd was bor.

BestIsWest · 25/02/2017 20:48

DM is Rh neg and currently has shingles so I guess must have had chicken pox.

HuckleberryGin · 25/02/2017 21:02

It's not crazy! It's actual science! Saying "well I had chicken pox" is just anecdotal. Some people smoke and never get lung cancer. Doesn't mean smoking doesn't contribute to lung cancer.

Okite · 25/02/2017 21:09

If a woman has had a anti-d injection with her first pregnancy, is the risk of resus disease in the second baby almost totally eliminated
Almost but not quite! My third baby had rhesus disease when she was born, despite me having anti-d throughout all pregnancies. Thankfully it was mild and she just needed a few days of light therapy.

TwoLeftSocks · 25/02/2017 21:13

I'm rh-, when do I get my x-ray vision? (would make up for the severe childhood measles, chicken pox and bcg jab)
