WHen did your periods return after birth?

Him was just wondering when periods normally return after having a baby? dd was born 5 months ago and is still breast fed at least 4 or 5 times a day, although she is gradually increasing the amounts of solids she has. She stil doesn't sleep through- does this make a difference to when they return? (Desperately hoping it'll be ages yet...)

Well dh (him) is probably wondering when they'll return as well but can't say I've asked him!! What I meant was Hi was just...

28 days after my dd was born they came back I only breast fed for a fornight though

AussieSim · 21/06/2004 20:09

There are a few other old threads on this with a great heap of data, but from what I recall it varies wildly despite frequency of bfeeding, introduction of solids, sleeping through the night etc. Some people are unlucky and they come back real quick and some people are lucky like me - DS was 10mths.

kiwicath · 21/06/2004 20:15

I've just been wondering the same thing myself. Baby boy 6 months day after tomorrow and still exclusively bfing. Strange as it may seem, I'd kind of like mine back. We'd actually like to get cracking on with #2 - I'm going to regret saying that!!! Going to eve's drop on your thread Hayls to see what replies you get.

gloworm · 21/06/2004 20:15

both times for me, it was a few weeks after stopping bf totally (they even stayed away when i was down to 1 feed a day)

skerriesmum · 21/06/2004 20:16

I boobfed for 13 months and got a period the following month. I was surprised it didn't return sooner as I had cut back the feeds to one or two a day by the end...

skerriesmum · 21/06/2004 20:17

snap gloworm!

Hayls · 21/06/2004 20:23

You're keen Kiwicath! The thought of no.2 has not been serioulsy considered at any point yet! I can't imagine wanting to go though it all again for a VERY long time. THough she's worth it!

Keen or just plain crazy!! Have been spoilt rotten with #1 so just my luck #2 will be a right little antichrist. Saving a fortune on tampons though so .... maybe not just yet.

MiriamR · 21/06/2004 20:59

Mine came back when ds was 5.5 months - by that stage, ds had just started 3 solids / day and I was only BFing at the bedtime and early morning ones.

hana · 21/06/2004 21:04

dd was nearly 8 months old. Loved not having any!

Hayls · 22/06/2004 13:02

Anyone else care to share?

I haven't got mine yet and DD is 7.5 mths. She's on solids but stil BFing 4/5 times a day.

If I remember correctly from DSs, I didn't have a period until after they had completely stopped BFing too, even when they were down to 1 feed from me.

It really does seem to be an individual thing!

Heathcliffscathy · 22/06/2004 13:11

Mine came back exactly one month after ds was born, and I exclusively breastfed for 3 1/2 months and am still breastfeeding now at nearly 8 months!!! they have been regular as clockwork, but pmt much much less bad

Benjaminsmummy · 22/06/2004 13:12

DS is 7 months today and my periods haven't started again yet. He is bf about 5 or 6 times a day and has three meals. He isn't fed between about 10pm and 7am.

I'm going back to work when he's 9 months - I'm sure they'll start again by then

MancMum · 22/06/2004 13:12

With both of mine it was 9 months - did b/f pretty much up until then but with lots of bottles/pureed food so not sure if it was b/fing keeping them away or just a very lazt system that could not be bothered to start again!

Must say periods since DD was born have been totally painfree - not even PMT to warn me they were coming back... hope this continues!

mummytosteven · 22/06/2004 13:13

I b/fed for two weeks (problems with jaundice made establishing b/f pretty much impossible and a somewhat fraught experience, to say the least).First AF was then 5.5 weeks after the birth!!! I was most disgruntled - thought that my two weeks b/f should have bought me a little more time than that!

Blu · 22/06/2004 13:21

When DS went town to bf-ing twice a day at 9 months.

webmum · 23/06/2004 11:37

Like glowworm it was 4 weeks after I stopped altogether, even if we had been down to just 2 (tiny) feeds a day. (she was hardly taking anything, which is why I stopped)

But I know people who got it when still b/feeding, so everyone's different!

florenceuk · 23/06/2004 12:06

About 18 mths - is this a record??? DS was still BF but only twice a day - so I guess my hormones just took ages to get back to normal.

KeepingMum · 23/06/2004 12:14

I bfed ds until 13 months and had a small one at about 10 months then they started properly on his first birthday! Still feeding dd (she's 10 months) again had a small one (light, only two days) a week ago so I guess it will be the same this time. She only feeds at bedtime and about 4-5 in the morning. I love not having them except for the unpredictability of when they will return, and also not being able to blame bad temper on PMT

shalom · 23/06/2004 12:56

With ds i breastfed her for 13 months and it came back when she was one . ds is 7 months still breastfeeding and it has not come back yet

Pidge · 23/06/2004 13:01

I think it was at about 9 months - was breastfeeding dd 3 times a day.

shelbel · 23/06/2004 13:40

mine started last week ds is almost 5 months and is breastfed although he's on two formula feeds per day now in preparation for me going back to work so i guessed thats what brought on my period. Disappointed as i thought i'd have a while longer until i'd fully stopped breastfeeding.
