WHen did your periods return after birth?

Him was just wondering when periods normally return after having a baby? dd was born 5 months ago and is still breast fed at least 4 or 5 times a day, although she is gradually increasing the amounts of solids she has. She stil doesn't sleep through- does this make a difference to when they return? (Desperately hoping it'll be ages yet...)

mine came back with all 3 of my children when they were 9 months. I don't think it was linked to the amount of breastfeeding I did - they were all breastfed at that stage, but varying amounts and with varying amounts of keenness (on their parts). DD1 was breastfed several times a day until she was 16 months and my periods still came back at 9 months. I read that it is related to body fat.

it can't be pollyanna, mine came back straightaway and I was (am) overweight (compared to before pregnancy

About 2 months after dd was born for me. I was surprised as I was breastfeeding and all my b/f mom friends didn't start theirs for ages. Their return did coincide with dd sleeping through and I seem to remember reading that when they no longer feed in the night it alters your body hormones. Anyway I b/f until dd was 18 months and a friend of mine b/f the same and didn't get her periods back until her dd was about 14 months old!

It was a year with dd1 but she fed a lot and didn't sleep well for ages. About 9 months with dd2 who fed less and liked food more.

Breastfed no1 for about 3wks, periods came back at five months. Bfed my other three for over a year each (nearly two for dd2) and periods came back at around 14mths.

6.5 months and counting! I'm actually getting paranoid that mine could start anywhere at any time now, and I have to keep 'checking'!

Nearly 5 months and no sign for me ... still b/fing though ...
PS Kiwicath ... you can still get on with making No 2 ... you don't have to wait till your AF comes back ... I know loads of people who got pg before their periods returned ... my mum included.
And if you don't get pg well, hey you having fun trying aren't you ?

kiwicath · 24/06/2004 07:33

Ghosty, have you been talking with my husband??

When DD was 10 months - at 8 months I returned to work and cut down to 2-3 breast feeds per day but she also had a 1-week nursing strike at 9 months.

6 weeks with ds1, 12 with ds2. Both exclusively bf and certainly NOT sleeping through

muddaofsuburbia · 24/06/2004 10:10

14 mths - about a week after dropping to one feed in the evening. Over a year of freedom was fantastic!

8 weeks after birth, even though breastfeeding, see other thread on pregnancy board
