We said no to the Nasal flu spray, but it was given anyway

Hi. We found out today that after giving the flu Nasal spray permission form with no selected, our daughter was STILL given it. We are going to speak to the headteacher this morning to confirm what happened and if our daughter was given the vaccine against our expressed permission.

Has anyone else been in this position before? This isn't a discussion about whether children should have the vaccine or not, that is down to everyone's personal opinion about the matter, but if it has been given without permission, it's a pretty serious issue we think.

I know that this post is a year old but the same thing has just happened to us and I’m interested to find out what the outcome was from the OP?

abbsisspartacus · 15/10/2017 10:16

On our form we only had to fill it in if we DIDN'T agree to the vaccine it's presumed acceptance

Lou70 · 15/10/2017 10:39

Ours had 2 separate forms - a green yes I consent form and a red NO I do not consent form. I signed and sent back the red form. Not sure how I could have made it any clearer!

Melsop · 16/10/2017 21:45

It's nothing to do with the headteacher who does or does not get fl. The nurse administering the vaccine is the one who should be checking the consent form.

Hi Lou70,

I cannot believe this has happened to you too, albeit for possibly other reasons, but you need to bring it up with the NHS, as if a child reacts to it then it is a very serious problem.

We had a reply back from the NHS team looking into this last year and I never updated anyone did I. Sorry. I will post their 2016 letter to this thread soon. I think they said it was partly to do with the new way the forms were designed, so they are looking at changing them. The nurse that administered the vaccine even called me directly to apologise, she was very apologetic. We DO all make mistakes yes, but we also need to make sure that when they do happen we look at ways to prevent it from happening again.

Well we got the new forms a few days ago, and to be honest they didn't look any different! My wife suggested we make a big deal of the fact that we do not want our child to be given it again, but I suggested we just fill in the form like a normal person and see what happens. I took a photo of the 2017 form filled in will post it up on here too very soon.

In regards to your issue, you MUST complain, however rare the reactions could be... you COULD save a life of another child.

Hi Stevecam,

Thank you so much for responding.
To explain briefly there are 2 children with the same first name in the class. The other child is known by a shortened version, ours by the full name. Our child was handed the other child’s consent form by mistake and taken to the room with the rest of the class.
We have met with Intrahealth who are responsible for doing the immunisations in our area. Having seen their protocol it is clear that neither their admin staff or the nurse have properly confirmed our child’s full name - failing to follow their own procedures. They are going to investigate further and have apologised, but they have been very defensive about their staff, stating that they followed protocol.

Ttbb · 20/10/2017 20:50

I would be absolutely livid-what if you had said no because she was allergic/immunocompromised? They could have killed her!

AveEldon · 21/10/2017 08:38

Lou70 have you made a formal complaint in writing?

Petalflowers · 21/10/2017 08:42

I was in a similar situation. Son had meningitis jab outside school and then possibly had it=at school as well. I wrote to the school and head of local NHS, who were responsible for administering it. It turns out mine was a paperwork error, but even that was unacceptable.

shewolfmum · 21/10/2017 23:26

Make it simple...keep vax out of education. Want a vaccine? Go to the doctors. My poor kid had to miss a day of school as i didn't want her in on live nasal flu vaccine day. So sorry your kid got this. I would be beside myself with anger.

MissConductUS · 27/10/2017 19:03

We are meeting with the head soon to discuss it, it could be a lawsuit

A lawsuit would require quantifiable damages, so I doubt there's any relief there.

The nasal spray vaccine has been taken off the market in the US as the CDC testing has found it to be ineffective, but one advantage of it is that it can be given to people with egg allergies. That might have made the staff (NHS and school) a bit sloppier with the forms.

angelgirl23 · 16/11/2017 21:06

If you said no they did it without your consent. This is a legal matter and I would contact a solicitor x
