"But pregnancy advice groups said the figures probably reflected poor access to contraceptive services"

What utter tosh

You can buy condoms in many loos in clubs and pubs. In any chemist or 24hour shop.

You have access to family planning clinics and doctors with free contraception

You can buy the morning after pill over the counter ffs

Shouldn't people take a bit more responsibility and get themselves to these places and get some bloody contraception?

I object to abortion because I don't believe that its right to take a life. I don't think its ridiculous at all. I think its very serious.

Blandmum · 11/02/2007 15:02

actually a zygote isn't even 2 cells, it is one.

And if that is 'life', do we go the next step and ban contraception, since it is wrong the 'deny' the zygote its 'right' to creation?

Snaf · 11/02/2007 15:03

A zygote is not a life.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:03

Yes I think 2 cells is a baby. I agree it doesn't look like a baby , but the minute it starts dividing thats what it is. As pointed out an abortion is usually carried out after 4 weeks when it is certainly more that

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:04

I don't think contraception should be banned. I think contraception is so important. I think it should be handed out like candy.

Monkeytrousers · 11/02/2007 15:10

Okay, you " don't believe that its right to take a life." But lives are taken all of the time. Telling people to stop and that it's wrong doesn't stop this from happening murder is banned and it still doesn't stop people doing it. Abortion and infanticide is a fact of life. Ignoring the fact that human life is full of tragady and difficut decisions doesn't stop people having to make them.

If you accept this as a fact the best thing you can do (actually do, not simply say) is help minimise that suffering. The fact is abortion does that. You have to agree with that logic even if you don't agree with anything else.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:13

That doesn't hold water with me, why not make murder legal if its going to happen anyway, Why not just give addicts drugs and crowbars to theives.

BassMama · 11/02/2007 15:13

Sorry to come back to this thread - I wasnt going to - But IMO people like you Paula should keep their opinions to themselves.

The pain, hurt, depression and suffering that most women go through after an abortion is extremely distressing and can take YEARS to get over.

People saying things like:
'You are taking a life. That is shameful.'
'I don't think protecting those rights warrents killing babies'
'I just know that killing your baby shouldn't be an option for people'
'It is a baby. Its a life and it wrong to take it. ', etc
Can knock a womans recovery period back miles.

I really dont think it is healthy for women to hear these sorts of things, especially if, as you said very early on in the thread, a lot of women who have abortions are young, or/and have low self esteem and are often already depressed.

I'm not meaning to pick on you paula, just that you hapen to have made the most comments here. I am really referring to everyone who makes these types of comments. In this day and age it is just plain not fiar to enforce these views onto women.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:14

I think my views are just as valid as yours.

Monkeytrousers · 11/02/2007 15:14

"Yes I think 2 cells is a baby. I agree it doesn't look like a baby , but the minute it starts dividing thats what it is. As pointed out an abortion is usually carried out after 4 weeks when it is certainly more that"

Basically then your objection is ideological and has no objective basis. That is the most dangerous position to be argung from. You cannot be swayed by facts. There is no solid basis for the position you advocate, it's is simply bloody minded ignorance - maybe (I don't know) of the religious kind.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:15

As I have said my views have nothing to do with religion. You can't prove its not a life either. Fact!

Monkeytrousers · 11/02/2007 15:16

What is a life? A cow is alive. Does that stop you eating it?

Snaf · 11/02/2007 15:17

Paula, what's your definition of a life, then?

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:17

I certainly value a human life over a cows. I would only eat a cow for food and I don't even do that very often.

BassMama · 11/02/2007 15:19

I agree Paula, your views are valid, but can be extremely hurtful when said to the wrong people.

I'm just not sure that its a particularly healthy point of view that you have.

Monkeytrousers · 11/02/2007 15:20

alive I mean. 'A life' is even more neblous

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:20

growth, reproduction, consumption responds to stimulus

Monkeytrousers · 11/02/2007 15:20

They aren't valid - they're bonkers sorry

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:21

I'm not trying to be hurtful to anyone, and I happen to think that the opposing viewpoint is unhealthy

Monkeytrousers · 11/02/2007 15:21

Basilly your argument is "..just because!"

expatinscotland · 11/02/2007 15:22

disagree, its a life that can't survive on its own but a life none the less. The term viable only means that it could live outside the womb. It doesn't mean that before this point its not a life.

By that token, paula, since to you all life is sacred, then I suppose you don't use anti-biotics and/or anti-virals.

Bacteria and viruses are alive, too.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:22

I don't like the opposing viewpoinhts on this thread but I have seen no need to be insulting to any of you Monkeytrousers.

amidaiwish · 11/02/2007 15:23

"I would only eat a cow for food and I don't even do that very often"

you sound like this is a last resort when you are starving... hardly.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:24

As I have said I think those are used to prolong human life. So no I don't have a problem with them.

expatinscotland · 11/02/2007 15:24

Cancerous tumours are alive, too. In fact, they even have enough of your own genetic markers that your own immune system allows them to take over whatever organ they grow in, and nourishes them with your own blood.

Should we not kill those, too?
