"But pregnancy advice groups said the figures probably reflected poor access to contraceptive services"

What utter tosh

You can buy condoms in many loos in clubs and pubs. In any chemist or 24hour shop.

You have access to family planning clinics and doctors with free contraception

You can buy the morning after pill over the counter ffs

Shouldn't people take a bit more responsibility and get themselves to these places and get some bloody contraception?

No but my point is that it is something used to sustain human life which I believe to be more important than a cows.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:25

Same answer for that

Blandmum · 11/02/2007 15:31

Biology pedant alert, viruses are not fully alive. The can't reproduce on their own , without taking over another living thing.

Biologically all living things, respire, need nutrition, move, grow, are sensitive to their environment, excrete and reproduce. Don't think that a zygote is sensitive to its environemnt.

May use this as a homework task at some point.

expatinscotland · 11/02/2007 15:32

Yes, mb, they need you to live.

So does a foetus.

Sorry, should have pointed that out.

HeartOnMyGreensleeve · 11/02/2007 15:33

Paula's views are rather more common than many people like to think. I don't like them either - I think she is dogmatic, and I think maintaining such a position entails a degree of wilful ignorance - but she has a right to express her opinions here. If we don't allow open debate, even whn we find our opponents' views distasteful or upsetting, then we deny ourselves the opportunity to understand, challenge and perhaps modify one another's views. IMO.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:33

But a baby won't kill you

expatinscotland · 11/02/2007 15:34

Really, PPP? You can say that categorically and with no exceptions?

Blandmum · 11/02/2007 15:35

It might if having it messes with your mind to the point where you are suicidal.

Having a baby may kill you if you have specific medical conditions.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:35

Ok point taken. Most of the time they do not threaten the life of the mother.

lulumama · 11/02/2007 15:36

"growth, reproduction, consumption responds to stimulus"

a foetus grows and reproduces in a cellular way, consumption, well, maybe , by default through the umbilical cord, but not a conscious consumption, and responds to stimulus, yes, but not at the point many abortions are carried out....

Snaf · 11/02/2007 15:36

Ummm, wrong there too, ppb. Pregnancy in itself can be life-threatening for some women. That's without even touching on mental health issues.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:36

An abortion could kill you to. I couldn't say for certain but probably a bigger chance of an abortion killing you than a baby making you suicidal.

HeartOnMyGreensleeve · 11/02/2007 15:37

What would your position be in the sitation where bearing a child would endanger the mother's life paula?

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:38

As I said I think its still a sad thing but think it is acceptable then. I answered that already.

Snaf · 11/02/2007 15:38
BassMama · 11/02/2007 15:39

I absoloutely cannot see how in any way you could think that the opposing viewpoint to yours on this subject is unhealthy.

A womans right to choice is unhealthy?

Where would you stand on abortion if a woman were raped and became pregnant?

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:40

I think you'll find even an abortion that is done in the UK isn't risk free.

AitchTwoOh · 11/02/2007 15:41

nor is being pregnant. regardless of whether the pregnancy is wanted ppb.

Snaf · 11/02/2007 15:42

Er, crossing the road isn't risk-free. What's your point?

Monkeytrousers · 11/02/2007 15:42

Nothing is risk free

BassMama · 11/02/2007 15:42

Paula - come on.

Of course abortion isn't rick free but it is extremely unlikely to kill you!

That sort of comment can WRONGLY put people off abortion. (and if thats your plan i doubt it'll work on this thread!)

Monkeytrousers · 11/02/2007 15:42

What is insulting?

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:43

I can't see how you think that wanting to protect life is unhealthy.

The rape issue is a very difficult one. In a way the issue is the same. The baby has the right to live as all babys have the right to live. The sex however wasn't concentual so I I think abortions in this case should be allowed. I don't think its the best option however but its insensitive to make someone go through with that.

BassMama · 11/02/2007 15:45

Dont you think it is insensitive to make a woman go through any pregnancy that she doesnt want to then?

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 15:46

I agree it is remote. I think the chance of suicide is also remote.
