Am I having a miscarriage ?

God, I don't really know where to start.

This is going to get TMI at some point so I do apologise.

My DD2 is 10 weeks old, i started taking my pill following my 6 week check on 8th January - my GP said I was fine to start taking pill straight away as long as I was sure I hadn't had a period since DD2's birth, which I hadn't. Started taking pill that day but then got put on a course of antibiotics so GP recommended running 2 packets back to back - however, before I had finished the first packet I started spotting slightly (this was on Thursday of last week), by Tuesday this week it had turned into a full blown period so started using a tampon but still continued with my pill.
This thursday I had a bit of a funny turn, went very hot, light headed, dissy, sick - had to sit down as I thought I was going to pass out, although this passed after 10 minutes. Yesterday I was in tears with my period pains, had to take nuerofen my stomach was hurting that much - never felt period pains like it.
Last night when removing my tampon I noticed a huge clot and something that looked odd, so I poked at it and it was a long (maybe 3/4 inches) piece of something, it was clearish sort of like a mucusy colour but when I squished it between toilet roll it was quite hard, like you would imagine a vein to be.
I know it is gross but I showed it to DH and he questioned whether I was maybe pregant and rather than this being a period maybe I had miscarried without even realising I was pregnant. I tried not to think about it too much as I was just really confused. When I went to the toilet this morning the same thing happened, roughly the same size, same type of thing.

I just don't know what to think - could I have miscarried without even knowing I was pregnant? Could it be something retained after having DD ?

Whatever it is, itis definitely not right - they were like huge lumps of body tissues. I'm so confused

Thanks Fio, that is reasuring. My periods went straight back to normal after DD1 so was completely shocked by this.

might you have an infection .....?

clots and a heavy period ok, but hot & sick indicate something a bit more....

i would have it checked just in case you needs ABs...an early miscarriage at this stage, i think you would be unlikely to pass more than clots and blood, rather than tissue...IFYSWIM..might be wrong..but that is what i think.

FoghornLeghorn · 03/02/2007 17:30

I've got no idea about an infection Lulumama.
I think I will make an apt with GP on Monday just to be on safe side

best to be on the safe side...i would stop using tampons for the remainder of your period though, in case it is an infection....

FoghornLeghorn · 03/02/2007 17:32

Yeah I thought that this morning so changed to Sanitary Towel

Perhaps you have retained a bit of the placenta from your recent delivery with DD2? Deffo go to docs. To be honest I would ring NHS direct and follow their advice. You may be better seeing someone today rather than leaving it til after the weekend.

FoghornLeghorn · 03/02/2007 22:24

I'm not able to go anywhere atm. DH has broken toe and immobile so cannot leave him to look after the girls while i go anywhere (if that's what the recommend). MIL will be around Monday

Keep an eye on your temperature foghorn .... if you feel ill you may have an infection (your DD is still quite young afterall)

FoghornLeghorn · 04/02/2007 18:39

Thanks Ghosty, I am keeping an eye on temp.

Will try and get into GP's tomorrow am.

Lost another clot/| this morning, not as big as previously but pretty much the same consistency.
Have been looking on internet to see what it could be and I found some signs of miscarriage which were described as light spotting turning to eavy bleeding, loss of clots & tissue, fever, dizziness etc.
That would be exactly how I would describe it to the GP tomorrow.

When you say 3/4 inches - do you mean 3 or 4 inches or threequarters of an inch?

FoghornLeghorn · 04/02/2007 20:20

3 to4 inches

OP posts:
lulumama · 04/02/2007 20:21

3- 4 inches sounds really quite large for an early miscarriage...

lulumama · 04/02/2007 20:24

by about 10 weeks, you would expect a foetus the size of your little finger.......

this must be really distressing for you

please try and get to the docs first thing

LowFatMilkshake · 04/02/2007 20:35

If this helps, I M/C at 10 weeks, but passed the foetus which had died at 7 weeks. It was about the size of broad bean.

X

FoghornLeghorn · 04/02/2007 22:03

It is very distressing.

DH and I didn't have sex until I started taking my pill which was 8th Jan so there is no way I could've been very far pregnant if that was the case.
I'm just so confused, it doesn't seem at all normal to me, whatever it is

hope you get to the docs today xxx

Sorry haven't had time to read this all, but I had something similar last year when I had the coil - I got scanned in case it was a lost pg but it was debris from a dispersing cyst on my ovary.

Get it checked out, it comuld be nothing, but always wise to get seen.

FoghornLeghorn · 05/02/2007 19:36

Managed to get apt. Have relatively high temperature, 38.5 and after checking me over doc thinks it is likely to be retained product from after DD2's birth. She advised waiting it out for a week and then if still bleeding she will send me to hospital for scan and scrape to clear out any remaining product.
It seemed to be getting better from yesterday so I let the GP know this, however, I have now just had 3 clots on my pad, one as big as the first and 2 smaller ones.

I now don't know whether I sould wait until next week or if I should try and get seen at hospital tomorrow. Feeling pretty rough atm

OP posts:
ghosty · 05/02/2007 19:43

I can't believe she said wait a week
I had quite sudden clots and bleeding (more than it should be) only 2 weeks after DD and I was in immediately for scans which proved retained products. As I had a c/s they didn't want to scrape but I was put on iv antibiotics and kept in for 2 days.
Foghorn, go back in ...

belgo · 05/02/2007 19:47

yes, I agree with ghosty, go back to the hospital, you need to get this sorted out, the sooner the better.

SpaceCadet · 05/02/2007 19:57

get yourself to casualty, if you have retained products you need treating straight away, usually a d and c.

FoghornLeghorn · 05/02/2007 20:06

I will ring my maternity ward now and see what they think.

I know i sound very naive but is that bad ?
