having a coil fitted

ipodthereforipoor · 11/01/2007 22:01

I'm having one fitted next thursday and I have been told "not to have sex till then" even with a condom.

Obviously this is to ensure I am not pregnant when it is fitted. Howver, does this mean ALL types of sexual activity are banned ?

I'm in a very new relationship and unless I just dont see him, it will be a struggle to resist some inducing activity!

(figgypud - I know you are lurking, please dont mention this to me in RL!!!! I cant be arsed to namechange!)

What a load of rubbish, I was told there was no problem with sex. Although I did abstain the night before .

What contraception are you currently using?

And who to;d you this?

LIZS · 11/01/2007 22:04

Who on earth told you that ! Can imagine maybe a day or two beforehand unless you use a condom, could you have misunderstood ?

LIZS · 11/01/2007 22:06

but thinking about it even then you can use a coil as emergency contraception for up to 72 hours

ipodthereforipoor · 11/01/2007 22:06

family planning nurse told me! SENIOR FPNurse actually!!

Obviously I wouldn't rock up for a fitting post-Love in!

Have been using condoms, so I couldn't see a problem, but she said the Dr fitting it has refused to do it for people when they turnup and say they have had sex

Managed to get this appoint as else it was a 4 week wait for next period, but abstain from intercourse forTWO WEEKS! went for a temp. restraining order and quick fit next week instead!

OP posts:
ipodthereforipoor · 11/01/2007 22:08

she sounds like a fuckwit then?!

Definately didn't misunderstand as I was paniced by the thought of a two week wait!

Not great in a new realatuionship as you can imagine!

ipodthereforipoor · 11/01/2007 22:30

hmmmm might just risk it at the weekend then!

god its going to hurt on wednesday isn't it - felt a bit funnt when she mentionded the "clamp open and insert" bit!

OP posts:
sarahlou1uk · 11/01/2007 22:32

it doesn't hurt - just a bit uncomfortable. It hurts more when the blasted thing slips down and you keep having to go back and have it reinserted (or taken out like I did )

ipodthereforipoor · 13/01/2007 15:52

struggling to resist his charms - and frightened the DR will know - have had to send him home!

ipodthereforipoor · 13/01/2007 16:05

will do! - i only went in on thursday for some advice - and they happened to have a cancelation come in, so i was able to get a soonish appointment. Also told them i was high risk for noncompliance with using condoms so i think she wanted to get me sorted asap!

OP posts:
CakeandFineWine · 13/01/2007 20:17

Ipod I'm sure it will be fine!
Dr won't be able to know if you've had sex or not!!! Surely!?
Let me know how you get on tho......... Keep thinking bout getting one but don't like the thought of it! Now finished BF best to get back on the pill I guess!! MMMMMmmmmmmmm?

Why wouldn't you want this friend ?figgypud? to mention it too you in RL? Nowt to be ashamed of!

ipodthereforipoor · 14/01/2007 16:04

This friend figgypud is lovely btw - would tell her anything - especially after a few buckets of wine!

My doctor also told me I couldn't do anything even with condoms for a week before it was fitted - I think if you're pregnant when they fit the coil it can be dangerous - so because condoms are only 99% and not 100% safe they tell you not to do anything. They do a preg test before they fit it anyway but I think it wouldn't show up if you'd only just conceived.

But if you're really careful I'm sure you'll be fine! They're just being extra super cautious - they won't know if you've done anything or not!

It doesn't hurt - just a bit uncomfortable like when you have a smear.

ipodthereforipoor · 14/01/2007 20:02

cool! Glad I'm not the only one been told that!

I've just come on so the nurse said that would be ok if I promise to resist - she was very appologetic when she told me, especially when she asked how long we had been together! Not the wisest choiceof cntraceptic to have fitted in the early weeks of a new relationship?!

Thanks for the reassuring words of support - Will report back to all interested parties on Thursday, assuming all goes well.

runnyhabbit · 14/01/2007 21:43

FP nurse told me to take some nurofen or paracetamol about half hour before you have it fitted. Have had 2 fitted and forgot to take some first time round. Was much better the second time after I'd taken the nurofen.
HTH

LIZS · 14/01/2007 21:45

"They do a preg test before they fit it anyway." Not either time for me !

ipodthereforipoor · 18/01/2007 21:16

THEY COULDN'T FIT IT!!!!!

apparantly she needed a long speculum because my cervix was high and a bit backward! The Dr did try but said it would be better to wait till they had a longer one!! - i have an abnormal Fanjo!!!

Next available appointmnet - 31st January.

Nearly passed out when she said to abstain from intercourse till then - not a happy bunny! She was deadly serious and even said that a condom would not make it ok when I looked a bit crest fallen. Poor new-man is now having 3 weeks without - which in a new relationship is quite challenging.

BOOO. and they cant even guarantee that the next clinic appointment will have the right speculum available. Am thinking of a letter to PALS!

OP posts:
CakeandFineWine · 19/01/2007 20:05

TOO RIGHT!!!!! Get onto Pals.

Thats terrible they said they night not even have one next time! AND making you wait SO long! Esp if they know you will be attending!!! They should make sure they have a long speculum!
Maybe a firm reminder of how much a child could cost the state................,maybe then they'd somehow fit you in

Surely if they told you to avoid intercourse last time for this appointment for 7 days so as long as you avoid it a week before?

ANYHOW theres always other options to keep him sweet till then TRUST ME!!!
Give us a bell if you need advice!

ipodthereforipoor · 19/01/2007 20:19

am getting good at keeping him sweet - its me thats having trouble keeping my knickers on!!

What if I presented as an emergency contraception case and refuse morning after pill and would only consider emergency fitting of the coil??!!!

OP posts:
crumbs · 19/01/2007 20:22

My GP couldn't fit mine, recommended I went to the FP clinic, and she had no probs. Is there a walk-in clinic you could try - save waiting 3 weeks
