Open Letter to Mumsnet

This is a truly strange thing for me to do, but I find myself in an unfamiliar situation. Recently diagnosed with terminal Pancreatic Cancer, one would imagine this as an opportunity to slip into depression and despond, yet the reverse seems to be the case. I am constantly bemused and amazed by the kindness of ordinary people - never more so than with the denizens of Mumsnet.

Martianbishop, my better half (PC credentials established, yes?), has found great rewards in contributing to Mumsnet threads over the years. Although, with the recent stress of my diagnosis, she has taken cover somewhat, she still haunts the chats and has continued correspondence with a few closer friends on the board. I know that she has found this of great comfort and I offer my sincere thanks for the help you have offered. More bizarrely, I know that there has been great debate over the sad plight of those caught in the mire that is Farepack. I had heard that there was discussion of Mumsnet centred contributions to those affected, which seemed like a really good and charitable act. When my name was mentioned however, I confess that I was aghast. "We've got Xmas all squared away, we don't need charity" I bleated. However, I realise that true charity is in the expression of compassion, not simply the need. I was completely choked when we received some exquisite prepared meals via special delivery - the truth is that Martianbishop is completely overwhelmed sometimes by the need to juggle me, 2 kids and a full-time job, even before you factor in the Xmas madness.

However, the tale is not yet over. Just before Xmas, we received I-Tunes vouchers of considerable value. Now, I don't know any of you personally and my wife (sorry) has taken at least as much from Mumsnet as she has ever given, so this level of giving seems completely beyond the pale. However, it has gladdened my heart and bolstered my confidence in the continuance of life, so it has performed a real and lasting service. Therefore, I would like the opportunity to express my gratitude and admiration to each and every one of you in the Mumsnet web. No matter what the final outcome of my little pocket drama, you have all made a difference. Can any of us ask for anything more?

In praise of Mumsnet, their moderators, contributors and supporters. Keep it up!

Lovely to have you as a Mn-er MrMB!

Much love to you both - and you can always post about anything you like, you know.

Blimey what a great bloke you are!

A lovely post and I wish you all the very best in dealing with the latest challenges which life has thrown in your direction

Tamum told me you'd been spotted on here Mr MB.
As others have said, MB means such a lot to all of us. Her wisdom, wit and erudition, her transparent love for you and her teaching career - she has always been great company on here. So of course we love you too - she has got to have good taste in men on top of all her other talents.
We think of you all the time and it was marvellous to read from MB today that you have had some good news following the latest chemo results

We look after our own here And you become one of our own too by default

martianbishop gives easily as much to mumsnet as she gets (though I wish she'd stay away from those September education threads ...and you sound every bit as special as I knew you must be from the way she writes about you.

You're welcome, in other words

THank you for your time taken to write Mr MB. MB is, as so many have said, loved and well regarded by so many of us here. My thoughts and prayers are with you both. xx
