Woke up with a deep purple bruise on my eyelid this morning ... should I worry?

My eye felt a bit itchy and sore this morning and I rubbed it then realised it was quite painful. When I looked in the mirror I noticed a dark purple bruise on my eyelid towards my nose about the size of a 5p coin. I've had a headache for a couple of days but I get a lot of headaches anyway. I spoke to NHS Direct who said it was unlikely to be connnected to the headaches but I'm a neurotic so I'm worrying.

Is this familiar to anyone?

could you have bashed it in the night?

what happened with your headaches in the end?

you may have had a bit of grit in it and as you rub it caused the bruising as it is very sensitive

Or did you bump your head recently and the bruise has settled there?

fox, the headaches continue, no change unfortunately.

I don't think I can have bashed it or rubbed it too hard but you never know.

mp, I've been watching myself grow old quite carefully with denial of course as to the extent of the baggy skin, but this is definitely a bruise it's very defined and really a very intense dark purple.

I know, it's such a drag. I go back to the neurologist in January. Sometimes I realise I've kind of got used to it and others it gets me down.

Sorry about the chronic headaches IG, I hope I didn't sound too flippant . You've probably tried it, but when I had chronic migraines (with ME) I found lavender oil on my pillow helped a bit, and also some breathing exercises which I used for relaxation also helped with the headaches. And head/shoulder massage, if you can get it. And limeflower tea helped me too.

I am sorry to hear it, I know how miserable persistent headaches are.

Are you prone to bruising easily? If so, it might be worth asking to get your clotting factor/times checked. IIRC these can be affected by all sorts of mundane and non-worrying things.

I speak as one who regularly sports purple/pink bruises on my legs from the slightest of knocks.

hello im! i get purple eyes if i rub my eyes too much, the next day i can't open them.

bauble, no I'm not particularly prone to bruising.

So, basically, the consensus on this one is that it's just a bruise and not some kind of horrible internal eye bleed? I mean it's common to wake up with a bruised eye? Or common-ish? Or at least not scary?

hope the neurologist can help - so nothing came of all the tests? I suppose in one way that's reassuring but still doesn't help your situation.

IF, do you have a dp/dh who may have whacked you with an arm-fling during the night? Has happened to me before - I woke up but didn't know what the hell had happened

Hi SEA! But do your eyes look really bruised after rubbing them? This is like a real shiner.

Fox, believe it or not, I still didn't get the results of the MRI and I haven't received an appointment for the other test despite calling and hassling them. They promised me December but nothing's been forthcoming so I'm going back in January with one of the tests not done. Very frustrating. Bloody NHS!

Miaou, I didn't sleep with dp last night so not that this time!

Don't wish to worry you but my m-i-l had this and was later told she'd had a mild stroke - could this be linked to the headaches as well. Did you tell NHS Direct about the headaches? Why not go to the GP or ring the neurologist/dept?

It is, isn't it? I've been so frustrated. But it's such a huge hospital I haven't been able to sort out anything really. The tingling and weakness in my legs and feet has progressed quite a lot too, I'd have liked to have the nerve conduction tests done. I suspect that I've probably got some nerve problems in my neck or spine but haven't got a clue how to get that diagnosed.

Oh shit, robinia, that's horrible. Yes I did mention the headaches. Did your MIL have any other symptoms though?

IF, you sound so worried - if I was really worried about something like this I would definitely go to a walk-in centre or to A&E or something, or at least call NHS Direct. It can't hurt to put your mind at rest - if there is something to worry about it's better to get it seen promptly, and if there's nothing seriously wrong, you'll be happier knowing sooner.

I do worry, greeny, but I've had the headaches so long and have spoken to so many people about them that I can't bear to go back again. I'm not sure the bruise is connected and just wondered if this kind of bruising was 'common' and non-scary! How are you doing btw?
