What can I do to get rid of my depression?

Having a bad bout of depression at the moment and have just tried cranial osteopathy. Is there anything else (apart from ads ) that you would recommend? I'll try anything at this stage

I agree about the exercise. Have 9 month old springer spaniel so walk for a couple of hours a day whatever the weather. Also joined a gym recently and enjoy that. I don't have any friends nearby and that is a source of concern for me. DH says I can come across as terrifying (thus the name!) and I am trying very hard to be more approachable. I'm lonely and it's getting me down. I'm from Dublin and moved here (UK) in 1987 but due to DH's job have moved around a lot. I have been off work for 2 years now so my day to day contact with adults is practically nil.

Melsy, I am having a series of craniosacral osteopathy and am going to try reflexology too. I take an omego-3 fish oil supplement already but will try to eat more vitamin c.

Not a good time at the moment

Flip, I have anxiety attacks which I can mostly control now. I also use Bach's rescue remedy to help with those. Yes, I am tired (DD sick last night) but I am tired no mater how much sleep I get. I also 'need' to siesta in the afternoon which sometimes I can do but mostly I can't. I have put on over 2 stone in weight and a couple of days ago a child in DD's nursery asked me if I was DD's Nan?!!!

Awww ghengis don't worry about the child's comment. I had one ask if I was 12 the other week (ok so i act it )

I had cranial osteopathy the other day (you know about my son) and it was fab I've been so chilled out since. I've also bought a lightbox as I get v down when it's dull outside. I reckon living up north it'll come in useful most of the year.

Have you tried other supplements? Magnesium is lacking in most women for some reason and has a link with nerves. A nutritionist may be of help?

juniper68 · 07/05/2004 10:19

have a look at this

found this on magnesium

ghengis · 07/05/2004 11:53

Thanks J68. I'll look into it.

Didn't have time to read all the thread so apologies if repeating anyone.

I have citalopram (only 10mg) for panic attacks/anxiety..and have taken up running..only 10 mins per day but really seems to work (was walking for an hour or so a day before starting to run). I find that getting outside and having some exercise really seems to work.

glitterfairy · 07/05/2004 12:18

Ghengis I have a welsh springer of one and must say that he cheers me up quite a bit. They love life and are so enthusiastic it wouold be good if we could borrow some of that vitality. It sounds tough at the moment but you are doing all the right things. Is there any way you could extend your friends where are you at the moment?

ghengis · 07/05/2004 12:22

GF, I'm in Exeter. I have tried the M&T thing but it's not for me. I am hoping to meet some people at the gym. Definitely agree about springers - she is wonderful and keeps me going!

Hi Ghengis, are there any support groups in your area for people with depression/mums with pnd? That might be an avenue to try.

juniper68 · 07/05/2004 12:42

bluebear, I'm on 10mg of citalopram too but coming off them now. I was on 20mg to start with. I've found them very helpful.

Do you think you'd be able to go to a support group ghengis? Or have u already tried them? What about baby and toddlers? I tried a few until I found one that suited me and used to go from my two being babies.

juniper68 · 07/05/2004 12:47

have a look at this

kizzie · 07/05/2004 19:07

Bluebear - how have u found the 10mg?
I know someone else who just used 10mg (never went up to the full 20mgs) and found it helped.
At the moment Im going through the process of trying to get off AD's and see if I can manage without it but if panic attacks return very seriously then my GP has suggested a low dose of Cipramil.

Hope u dont mind me asking.
Kizziex

juniper68 · 07/05/2004 22:35

FWIW I'm on 10mg too and it is a help. When I first started cipramil/citalopram i was on 10mg and it helped a lot then my GP upped the dose to 20mg as this is the usual dosage. I feel that 10mg would've been fine for me though as my PAs weren't too bad.

JenniH · 07/05/2004 22:46

Do you have a cpn?

I think mine saved my life when I was younger. I have one now as well, and it really helps me (but I do have other problems)

I haven't tried alternative therapies.

ghengis · 08/05/2004 09:03

No, I haven't a cpn. Are they attached to surgeries or at the mental health unit?

OP posts:
melsy · 08/05/2004 09:09

They are linked to mental health units and if you go to one they will routinely set you up with a cpn automatically. I got signed off after 1st visit , not sure if that was a good thing or not as I still continued to have pAS.

How do i find MInd groups in my area, or shall I call my cpn ??

juniper68 · 08/05/2004 09:19

To find it for ghengis i just typed exeter+support+depression in the search engine.

melsy · 08/05/2004 09:29
