hello

i wrenched something in my back yesterday lkifting ds2, i felt something rip. i went out yesterday evening having taken lots of painkillers and although it was sore it wasn't unbearable.

i had a really bad night unable to get comfortable... now it ias pure agony, i can't walk to the loo without help, i can't take a full breath, andf as well as the back injury6 i also have a sort of soft (waterfilled?) swelling on my front corresponding to the pain on my back, it is so painful, i am not exaggerating.

i called nhs direct and they told me to take ibuprofen which I was already doing and it does bugger all. Any nurses around? I'd be grateful; for any advice.

te doc i spoke to was quite offhand, he said "i hear you've pulled a muscle"n and said if ibuprofen doesn't work i should come to the walk-in centre. i can't manage that, i would have to get in a taxi, and i am not exaggerating whrn i say i can hardly move

I'm not medically trained but I don't like the sound of the swelling. I've hurt my back on numerous occasions, been in excrutiating pain as you describe, but I've never had any kind of physical sign of an injury.

Do doctors make house-calls any more - or do you have to get to a walk-in clinic? My advice was going to be to go to A&E...but that's no good if you can't move.

GeorginaA · 21/10/2006 18:26

I would say go to A&E too. I've done my back in at the moment (lifting my ds2 funnily enough), but painkillers ARE making a dent and there is definitely no swelling. Have you got a mate nearby who could drive you there?

Greensleeves · 21/10/2006 18:34

the doc didn't seem to think it was anything moire than a pulled muscle, he said theyv wont come out, and we dfon't have a car so woud have to go ion my own in a taxi, i don't think i could do it

Where do you live Greensleeves? Are any of us living near you?

Greensleeves · 21/10/2006 18:48

yes, a few MNers live near me (was with 2 last night ) but it wouldn't be any good as at the moment I cant really even get dressed or stand up properly

dh says we should wait till morning andb then we should all go to AandE so he can help me walk (would be too late to drag the kids out niow)

greeny..my DH has terrible back problems ..doc has come out twice to administer ibuprofen injections......

it is not a pulled muscle!

can you get any diclofenac ( volatarol ) & something like co codamol...

swelling indicates some real trauma and your back could go into spasm to protect itself......

DH was once brought home in an ambulance after back went at a friends and he was stuck on the floor for 5 hours...!

the docs can do things to help....can DH chivvy them along a bit...sounds really bad!

Greensleeves · 21/10/2006 18:54

have got cocodamol, ibuprofen, aspirin, voltarol muscle rub, and a cold compress, it must be taking the edge off it, but it stll bloody hurts i am not prone to back problems but it doesn't feel like a pulled muscle!! bloody ignorant glib dismissive doctor

have you tried alternating hot & cold - with a wheat bag or hot water bottle ...

have you tried alternating hot & cold - with a wheat bag or hot water bottle ...

Greensleeves · 21/10/2006 18:56

no, but dh suggested hot bath followed by cold compress, should i try it?

ds2 keeps kissing and patting my back, bless him

lulumama · 21/10/2006 18:59

if you feel you could get in and out ok, with some help from DH,then give it a go...but hot water bottle / wheat bag better as more localised on the traumatised bit........

Greensleeves · 21/10/2006 19:03

thanks lulumama

oh freaking hell greenytha, again you're sick?

dunno what to say, sympathy vibes wafting across the severn...

FrannyandZooey · 21/10/2006 19:32

Oh bloody hell

the lump sounds...erm.....well not good, is it?

Am being summoned upstairs, will come and tell you off or something later

oh dear oh dear

do you think it can wait till morning? really?

AlfredAitchcock · 21/10/2006 19:41

the lump sounds very not good. can't you ask your GP for a house call? they must have someone on call, surely? you're in agony - i'd ring them.

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 21/10/2006 19:42

greeny, seriously, that lump sounds not so good

I had all that except the swelling when 6 mo pg with dd-it was agony. But the swelling is concerning.

Greensleeves · 21/10/2006 19:44

I did ask, but he was an arsehole . tbh they wouldn't come out when i begegd them to for a 4yo with a fever and blood pouring out of his ear, I had to take him to A&E in a taxui in his pjs adn sit with all the drunks and fisght casualties at 1am so thea chance ogf someone coming out to me are slim

OP posts:
Greensleeves · 21/10/2006 19:52

might get dh to ring them back and get shirty, nothging to lose i spose

OP posts:
AlfredAitchcock · 21/10/2006 20:21

it's worth a try. how can he say that he won't come? it's his bloody job. thing is, you can't go to A&E, it's a Saturday night, it'll be mayhem. you need a doc to refer you first, if it's serious. Does it, er, sound to anyone else like a hernia (remembering that i'm an idiot with no medical training)?

lulumama · 21/10/2006 20:23

hernias more abdominal / groin area.....

not being able to take a full breath sounds rib related....

swelling indicates trauma to the soft tissue /muscle

Anyone on here a nurse / doc/ ???

i'm just guessing!

AlfredAitchcock · 21/10/2006 20:26

righto. i thought you could herniate various things.
