Hope all is ok, essbee.

Hope your ds is okay. I ended up taking mine to A&E last week with a temperature of 104° and he was diagnosed as having viral tonsilitis so antibiotics obviously no good. Wonder if yours has the same. The paediatrician said they can get several bouts of it, so I'm bracing myself for a repeat episode - he's been ill on and off for the last 6 weeks, so think it must all be the same thing. Will keep my fingers crossed for you - this was me last week! He's much better now, but his glands haven't gone down yet, poor thing.

Am concerned that you were sent home with his temp still so high. Is he passing urine and if so is it dark in colour? Kids are very prone to dehydration with high temps, do not hesitate to go back in the morning if his temp has not resolved.
The most likely reason that the antibiotics are not working is that it is probably viral in nature one of the paediatric drs at work told me over 90% of tonsillitis is viral. It is an very painful disease and if you cannot get enough fluid into him then he may need to go on a drip for a while until he can drink properly.
Check his tongue and also pinch (gently) the skin on the back of his hand. If his tongue is not moist and if the skin on the back of his hand does not pop back instantly these are signs of dehydration. Did they check his urine in A+E as if he has ketones in his urine this is also a sign of dehydration and he should have had bloods taken to check this.

essbee, if he's not improving and you're not happy with the advice you were given, I'd be tempted to go back. I know what a swine that is with a sick child in the middle of the night though. I had to rush ds1 to the RD&E in a taxi in the middle of the night a few weeks ago with a raging temp and a burst eardrum bleeding all over the place, and the doctor we saw said just to "give him Calpol" and that there was no point giving him antibiotics or doing anything for him. He got steadily worse until I took him to our GP two days later, who swore and said he should have been given strong antibiotics earlier.

I hope your little boy is better soon, I kow how grim it is being up worrying about a sick child and not knowing what to do for the best

Greensleeves · 11/10/2006 00:36

Sorry, as far as getting his temp down in the short term - I only know about alternating Calpol and ibuprofen, sponging dowm with cool water, opening windows etc...it's so scary to have a child with a temp that won't come down.

lisalisa - it will probably NEVER happen again - but it's a nice reminder to both of us that we are all really about looking after children, however much we differ on everything else

Good night

Sorry: essbee - how was he overnight ?

Tiggiwinkle · 11/10/2006 07:58

Hope he is feeling better this morning and that you did not have too bad a night essbee.

ghosty · 11/10/2006 08:03

Hi Essbee ... hope your DS is feeling better ...
Does he get tonsilitis often? (you mentioned 'last time') ... is he being seen to about having his tonsils out? A friend of mine had this problem regularly with her DS - recurrent tonsilitis with terribly high temps ... when he had his tonsils out he was a changed child ... still gets sick obviously with other bugs but is never as ill as he was with tonsilitis.

Hope he is soon on the mend, essbee. Tonsilitis can be nasty, but hopefully the antibiotics will start to kick in soon.x

LIZS · 11/10/2006 13:11

Poor chap, must be so hard for you too. Can you ask that they take a throat swab to identify the infection, perhaps he'd be better with different ab's. The tummy ache may be the glands fighting the infection - dd had tummy ache with an ear infection last week . I've had tonsillitis many times in the past and felt so ill but always felt better after 2 days of ab's , so you are right to worry that he still feels so rough.

Overrun · 11/10/2006 13:12

Stomach ache could be all the puss draining down his throat, my ds1 is always sick with tonisllitus

pageturner · 11/10/2006 17:16

Hi essbee. Sorry I haven't been on today. We had a huge thunderstorm last night, lots of bangs and flashes, and it seems to have bust half our router so I've only just got on. Will be on and off I expect, though hope to be back later.

How's things? Hope ds is feeling better. You must be very worried. Has someone come out to see you?

SoupDragon · 11/10/2006 19:55

He's been admitted to hospital because of the persitant high temperature.

Greensleeves · 11/10/2006 19:56

Oh no, poor essbee . I hope they sort him out and get his temp down quickly.

LIZS · 11/10/2006 19:58

hope things improve soon .
