URGENT! 5yo DS in a lot of pain

Ds1 has been complaining ove rthe past few days of having 'a sore bottom' (not itchy). Since he went to bed over a hour ago he's been screaming with pain, saying it's his bottom... I've looked but can't see anything - no redness or bleeding. I've given him calpol & neurofen to no avail. Can't get thru to NHS Direct... should I take him to casualty/ What can it be????

But constipation wouldn't make you scream with pain, would it?

If my dc was screaming in pain and I couldn't alleviate it, I would always go to hospital

I've had constipation so badly I've screamed with the pain, so yes it could quite well be that. But then again, it could be something else - so he should probably see a doctor. Do you have an out-of-hours service you could call for advice, rather than taking him to A&E?

If you gently insert a thermometer greased with vaseline into his anus, does it come out with poo on it?

If so, you could try an enema. Presume you'll know what this is but if not it's a liquid which you insert up into the anus (by squeezing a tube), it works very fast to relieve constipation.

Constipation can make you scream with pain - patients are admitted with it! The other thing that springs to mind is wind - I personally have thought I was dying untill I err, had something pass.... . Can he have some andrews? Don't think analgesia would necessarily get rid of wind pain.

constipation had me writhing and screaming in agony when I broke my leg years ago .. it is bloody painful

I would contact local hospital A&E dept by phone

He seems to poo quite regularly so I don't think he can be constipated, & the pain is actually in his bottom rather than his abdomen. If I touch his buttocks he finds it painful. NHS Direct aren't answering (useful!) I could try the out-of-hours service but they always seem so pissed off when one calls...

Not poking about but just as you would if you measured a baby's temperature anally. If he is constipated, you'd definitely see it. Small finger test would also reveal it I'd say.

My Dd spent 2 hours screaming in pain the other night, due to constipation. I ended up giving her a glyserine suppository. She did a poo and instantly became a different person.

When did he last poo, and what was it like when he went?

Actually anyone screaming with pain should go to A&E imo. Get ready to go - or keep phoning NHS direct

But if the poo is compacted and pushing at his bottom but too big to come out he miht be holding onto it a bit and it could be really uncomfortable. My Dd holds her bum and her tummy when she gets really bad.

It's the only thing i can think of that would cause him to scream like tht.

But look - if you feel worried then get yourself to a&e mate, do it.

I felt like doing it the other night DD was so bad but I keep suppositories in the house so went down that line first, if that had failed I was off to the hossie.

Sciatica? This causes pain in the buttocks but is more common amonst older people though.

Best not to self - diaganose, anyway (imho).

Have just called SIL who used to be a GP. She says it might be an anal fissure. [he had a poo last night & it was fine tho he says it sometimes hurts when he poos]. DH is calling the out=of=hours now. Gotta go he's screaming for me

If his poo is hard then it could have caused a little tear inside his bottom.

Give him some lactulose, it's harmless sweet liquid that will soften his poo. It works by drawing water into the stool and sofening it. They give it to old people a lot. Totally ok, over the counter harmless stuff and will be good for him over the next few weeks if he dies have a bit of constipation and/or a little tear.
