Good evening. I am having an ablation early October due to extremely heavy periods. Has anyone else had one ? Please could you tell me what to expect and what length of recovery should I expect please ?

I he it done on a Thursday with a spinal and went back to work on the Monday and Tuesday which were start of term training days but was
Knackered and tender for the first week or so. I think I came home early from school on the Monday as I was tired. Glad your minders mums are being understanding. Hope you feel better soon.

Do you think you recovered quicker because you had a spinal rather than GA ? I just seem to be very light headed and nauseous . The actual site is a bit achey but not a problem. No discharge to speak of either Shock

I was really nauseous too, I had my tubes clipped at the same time so no idea what issues where down to which bit of the op.

gingeme · 27/09/2014 19:54

I guess it affects everyone different Hmm

I was nervous about having a GA and knew that I had recovered quickly from previous epidurals. I felt tender and tired but just went steadily and slowly at things. I only had a slight discharge but had no idea what to expect.

BeachyKeen · 27/09/2014 23:43

I had my ablation last year, best thing ever! I had about four or five days of feeling groggy/run down from the GA, but virtually no discharge or pain.
My doctor said they have to try other, less invasive, forms of treatment before they can do a hysterectomy, because of the higher risks of complications.
I think it is if something goes horribly wrong with a hysterectomy, the dr has to be able to say it was a reasonable option and that they had tried everything else first.

gingeme · 27/09/2014 23:55

Beachy did you want a hysterectomy then or are you happy with the ablation ?

I did want one then, because to me, it made sense just to get it out and gone. I didn't know about know about they risks of other things, like bladder problems and prolapse and stuff. Once I really looked at all the things that could happen, I figured it was worth a try. The doctor was clear that if the ablation didn't work, I would get a hysterectomy, without any jumping through hoops.
Once it was done, the relief was like night and day. I didn't get the achy cramping I used to get, no more being anaemic either!

gingeme · 28/09/2014 10:10

Sounds a bit like me. I just assumed they would give me a hysterectomy and that would be that. I've been told give the ablation a year and see if it helps if not I will be considered for a hysterectomy. Fingers crossed this will be all I need x

RandomMess, I'm waiting for an ablation and tubes being clipped at the same time.... Consultant said 2 weeks off work, I hope that's enough! I'm a self employed mobile Nail Tech so not only do I not earn when I'm off I have to lift, carry and drive when I go back.....

I'll have to wait and see I guess....

RandomMess · 29/09/2014 16:26

I would think 2 weeks should be fine. I got an infection in one of the keyhole sites and had to take really strong antibiotics. Week 3 I kept feeling dizzy and tired but that could purely be down to the antibiotics tbh they were like horse pills!

gingeme · 29/09/2014 17:06

What keyhole site Random? Was that for the sterilization ?
I feel alot better today. Occasionally dizzy but thankfully the nausea has stopped. Just a few more days rest and should be back to work Monday. Hard to believe this time last week I was snoozing and trying to eat a little bit to stop the nausea Smile

Yes it was - you have 2 one below your belly button and one just above your pubic bone.

Glad you're feeling so much better just don't rush it give yourself time to recover fully and take it as easy as you can the first week back - perhaps do as much prep as possible so it's less physical those first few days?

gingeme · 30/09/2014 08:07

Nausea is back Sad

Can I have a bath yet ?

RandomMess · 01/10/2014 21:39

Sad I should think so. Interesting that it seems nausea is a side affect!

gingeme · 02/10/2014 07:53

Randomness I'm not sure it is a side effect as I had problems with it before the ip. I suffer with vertebrae problems in my neck which cause dizziness and nausea. I see a chiropractor once a month who keeps it at bay ð??? once a month. Going to see her on Friday. Should be sorted for work on Monday Wink

Felling loads better today Grin currently having a period. Very very light which is fab still a hormonal mess though Sad hopefully this will sort out with time. A letter was sent to me from the gynecologist which was the same as the one sent to my gp. It said all was well. Nothing untoward found and to wait a year !!
