Good evening. I am having an ablation early October due to extremely heavy periods. Has anyone else had one ? Please could you tell me what to expect and what length of recovery should I expect please ?

What were the results of your lap ginge, did they say where your issues were and whether you have a follow up?

Take it very easy at work. Im assuming you have a job that involves lots of sitting down and no heavy lifting?

RandomMess · 23/09/2014 21:28

Glad it went well, I was really quite poorly afterwards and had to stay in a while Shock then I got a wound infection.

However, still the absolutely BEST thing ever - 4 years on and still virtually period free Grin

gingeme · 23/09/2014 21:35

No follow up awsomer. I'm a childminder so I can sit down all day if I want Grin

I'm glad you're doing so well Smile

gingeme · 23/09/2014 21:37

Randomess I just feel so tired. But then I woke every hour and half for a wee. I had a litre of fluid by drip, a litre of water , two cups of tea and about a litre of squash when I got home Shock

gingeme · 23/09/2014 21:41

Thanks awsomer Smile

I was in recovery for 4 hours and then on a morphine drip for at least 18 hours in total Blush

I did tell them that I didn't tell with GA well and I'm also prone to bowl/gynae spasms!!!

I felt loads better after about 10 days, then went Christmas shopping for a few hours and then felt rather unwell for a couple of days after...

So take it easy Wink

gingeme · 23/09/2014 21:46

Oh Randomess that doesn't sound good. Glad your doing ok now Smile

Really truly it was worth it!!! The only issue with the infection in the tiny tummy wound was taking the antibiotics made me ill Grin.

No regrets at all ever, people who don't suffer tsunami periods have no idea just how much they stop you living.

Pannacotta · 23/09/2014 22:30

Can I ask how those of you who have had an ablation managed to get it done on the NHS?
I would like one as have had v heavy periods for far too long but my GP and consultant have both recommended Mirena even though I am not keen at all on the idea.
Any ideas how to avoid the Mirena? They seem very keen to push it.

RandomMess · 23/09/2014 23:02

I had the mirena for 18 months and insisted they took it out - didn't suit me at all. I kept getting anemic so perhaps that's why???

You have to be very very definite your family is complete and I guess very insistent that you do not want to hormonal contraceptive again.

pearlgirl · 23/09/2014 23:48

I was fortunate in that I went to see the gynae consultant about something else and he looked at my notes and said he saw that I was complaining of very heavy frequent periods and that at least he could sort that quickly and easily and offered me an ablation without any prompting - had it done 7 weeks later. My gp was quite surprised but could understand my reluctance to have the mirena coil - I haven't tolerated any hormonal contraception well and wasn't prepared to try something that could send my system haywire and was really worried about the side effects especially the possible weight gain as I already have a significant amount to lose. The consultant listened to my reasons and offered me an ablation.

gingeme · 24/09/2014 09:11

Panacotta I originally asked for a hysterectomy as I seemed to have tried just about everything else going. I had a few appts with the gynecologist who told me they wouldn't consider a hysterectomy unless I tried a mirena or ablation first (had I have known this before I would have had a coil fitted a few months and be recovering from my hysterectomy now Hmm ) so I had this done and will see how I am in a few months down the line !

Wow just had a shower. It has totally wiped me out !
Should I be worried that I have no discharge !?!

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 26/09/2014 10:12

Thanks for the replies to my question re the Mirena.
My GP (and all the others at that practice) are very pro Mirena and reluctant to put me forward for an ablation, as was the consultant I saw recently.
Not sure how best to get it done really, 10 years of v heavy periods is a bit grim...

RandomMess · 26/09/2014 16:58

Well hormone contraceptives ultimately just don't control my bleeding. Perhap you can quote religious/ethical reasons for not having the coil...

My consultant insisted that one of us was sterilised as well as having ablation because there still is a pregnancy risk post surgery.

gingeme · 26/09/2014 17:33

Stick to your guns. It's your body in the end Smile

Feeling better day by day. Bored resting now. Still only eating little bits and feel a bit head swimmy at times though. No discharge to speak of which I'll admit I was a bit worried about. I suppose I won't know if it's been a success till my next period !?!

gingeme · 27/09/2014 09:43

Morning ladies. Can I ask how long everybody got side affects from the GA after their ablations? I still seem to be feeling nauseous and dizzy. Also my tummy has been really bloated almost all of the time whether I'm hungry, eaten or what ! Did anyone else have this ?

OP posts:
RandomMess · 27/09/2014 11:03

I felt really rough for up to 2 weeks tbh, on the third week I went back to work part time for a week and I only do an office job Shock
