Good evening. I am having an ablation early October due to extremely heavy periods. Has anyone else had one ? Please could you tell me what to expect and what length of recovery should I expect please ?

Another positive story here. I had horrific bleeding every since I started my periods at 12. Tried the mirena, this lead to worse bleeding and a trip to a&e.
Went for ablation in Jan, on a Monday, drove two hours to give a presentation on Weds, and threw my husband a surprise party on Saturday. Was fine throughout.
I was v v tired the Monday and Tuesday, but I do generally get quite tired after general anaesthesic/epidural. I had light bleeding, but no periods since then until this week. It's much, much lighter - the first time I've worn normal flow pads and not the nighttime ones - and it's competitive transformed my life.

I was also v anaemic and am a lot less tired now.

Not trying to be all doom and gloom OP, but even with a total hysterectomy aren't you still going to have hormonal problems? Presume you would start full-on menopause symptoms etc?

gingeme · 06/09/2014 10:28

Thanks redandyellowbits.
Yes pudding. I was on a hysterectomy thread on here for quite a while and spoke to lots of lovely ladies who had it for different reasons and they all seemed very happy on hrt. I've tried many hormones via pill, injecting etc and they didn't help at all . I've been checked to see if I'm peri pausal but I'm not so in my opinion a hysterectomy seems the best option. But fingers tightly crossed the ablation will help. I think my whole family would be glad Wink

Ha, know what you mean. Good luck for the 15th then, and let us know! May bump into you on Meno topics!

Just one more question while I think about it. Do I need to mow my lady garden ?

HauntedNoddyCar · 07/09/2014 12:42

No you don't need to.

I am another happy customer. 18 months without a period and very relieved. I felt tired afterwards but I was so anaemic beforehand that that may have slowed recovery but essentially fine in 48 hours.

puddingisgood · 07/09/2014 13:09

I had a tidy-up, but they really didn't care one way or the other!

gingeme · 07/09/2014 20:57

Good news Thankyou both xx

I had my pre assessment today. Didn't take long. I forgot to ask the lady at the time but should I take some sanitary towel in for after ?

OP posts:
puddingisgood · 09/09/2014 19:04

I did, though the hospital gave me one anyway. Better safe than sorry. I didn't have a lot of discharge afterwards, but I guess that varies form person to person.

gingeme · 09/09/2014 23:07

Was it one of those great big Dr White mattresses they used to give you at school ?

OP posts:
puddingisgood · 10/09/2014 07:24

Surprisingly, no! It was plain but thinnish and reasonably comfy.
Everyone was really nice, though I know that will vary from hospital to hospital, and I'm sure if I had asked for my own protection to be used that would have been fine.

gingeme · 10/09/2014 09:27

I'm having it done at a little private hospital which worried me a bit because on the little welcome pack it had a slip to fill in on how I wanted to pay ! Luckily the lady yesterday assured me I was having it done as an NHS patient Phew !!

Morning. Anyone about ? Having my op today and ironily I've come on. Will they still be able to do the procedure ?

OP posts:
gingeme · 15/09/2014 12:32

I will answer that question no they won't. Have been rescheduled for next Monday. Surgeon told me it would be dangerous and not as affective !

HauntedNoddyCar · 15/09/2014 13:57

How frustrating!

puddingisgood · 15/09/2014 13:58

Bloody typical, if you'll pardon the pun! Hope you are not too upset, it's hard when you've psyched yourself up for something isn't it? Better luck next week. Smile

gingeme · 15/09/2014 20:46

Yep mother nature at her finest Angry oh well he did say it would be more effective after the period as the lining will be nice and thin and alot easier to work with. Atleast it's not months to wait Smile

OP posts:
pearlgirl · 15/09/2014 20:52

That's typical isn't it. I answered up thread and continue to feel that for me it has been life changing as I was bleeding heavily and unpredictably before. I had it a year ago and apart from the discharge afterwards have had no bleeding since.

gingeme · 15/09/2014 20:59

Never mind I just think of it as a dummy run of what will eventually happen Smile the room was really nice though and I had my own free tv and en suite bathroom Grin better safe than sorry.

Got a letter today. Real thing Monday 1 pm Smile

HorsesDogsNails · 17/09/2014 20:26

Hope it goes well for you.

I saw a gynae consultant yesterday about an ablation - he tried to encourage me down the mirena coil route but I stuck to my guns!

He did, however, insist on a method of permanent contraception 'if I didn't want hormonal contraception' so will be doing laparoscopic sterilisation at the same time as the ablation..... 2 weeks off work and a bit more recovery I think than just the ablation. Still, if it stops the horrible periods I have at the moment it will be worth it!!

VivaLeBeaver · 17/09/2014 20:39

I had it done a few years ago, oddly enough my period started that day or the day before and they still did it.

Recovery was ok. I had 2 weeks off work but I have a really physical, on my feet 8 hours a day job with no breaks. Otherwise I think I'd have been fine to go back after a few days. The one think I was unprepared for was the watery yellow discharge for a couple of weeks after. It stank as well. I thought I must have an infection but they reckoned it was normal.....I guess dead tissue coming out??

gingeme · 18/09/2014 08:00

Horses so you'll be getting two for the price of one so to speak ? I hear you about hormonal contraceptives. I've tried so many and they've just added to my misery Sad for a start I don't need contraception as my Dh has had the snip and I certainly don't need any more hormones Thankyou very much !!
