Good evening. I am having an ablation early October due to extremely heavy periods. Has anyone else had one ? Please could you tell me what to expect and what length of recovery should I expect please ?

chickyegg do you think it caused the cysts? How were your periods before the procedure ? I was told they wouldn't consider me for a hysterectomy unless I had tried this or the coil Hmm

My periods were very heavy despite having a mirena. I was told I'd have to have a mirena after the ablation because of the risk of pregnancy. I didn't have cysts before, or pain. Now I have irregular bleeding but it has reduced over time, I've put on weight, have the cysts and cramps from time to time. I guess the mirena could be contributing to these problems but it is all certainly different since the ablation and considering I had a mirena before without these symptoms I'm not sure what to think.

gingeme · 21/08/2014 20:12

I've not heard many good things about the mirena tbh. Would you go for a hysterectomy ?

OP posts:
ChickyEgg · 21/08/2014 20:14

Yes, I'm waiting on another scan to see if the cyst in my right ovary has gone on its own but I have a very sympathetic GP and I am thinking of just seeing her and saying enough is enough. At the very least, I'd like the mirena removed.

gingeme · 21/08/2014 20:17

Oh my. Good luck x

ChickyEgg · 21/08/2014 20:18

Thanks! I'm sorry my experience is negative!

gingeme · 21/08/2014 20:20

It's ok I needed to hear both sides. What made you ask for the ablation in the first place ?

OP posts:
ChickyEgg · 21/08/2014 20:39

It was recommended as the next step because the mirena just wasn't helping with the heavy bleeding

gingeme · 21/08/2014 21:25

Really? Had you tried anything else? Like depo injection or mini pill ?

OP posts:
ChickyEgg · 21/08/2014 21:58

No. Tbh I wouldn't try anything else now

ThrowAChickenInTheAir · 21/08/2014 22:04

I had thermal ablation 7yrs ago. It's been brilliant. Periods quickly dwindled away following the op until none at all now. I felt fine afterwards. A good decision for me.

gingeme · 21/08/2014 22:14

Really suprised chicky as you said you had a good gp. I've tried every bloody thing going (except the coil) and this is my last resort bar the hysterectomy Hmm

OP posts:
gingeme · 21/08/2014 22:21

Throwachicken do you still get pmt or pms or whatever it's called ? Or does that dwindle with the periods ?

OP posts:
ChickyEgg · 22/08/2014 07:51

Oh yes, my GP is good but the gynaecology department have been dealing with everything. Or rather, this is my second gynae department. The first one was useless. I moved and spoke to my then new GP who referred me to this different one.

Btw, you will still get PMS if you already suffer with it as the ablation doesn't alter hormones.

gingeme · 22/08/2014 09:13

argh that's not good news Sad I get terrible pms and it seems to be getting worse each month. That's why I tried so many different hormone stuff first ! I thought a hysterectomy would just get rid of the lot and be done with but no that's not how my luck runs. More a case of ' oh well you've been suffering for many years you can afford to suffer some more !' Angry sorry rant over Hmm

OP posts:
ThrowAChickenInTheAir · 22/08/2014 09:46

I think I still did/do to some extent. As Chicky says this isn't a cure for that unfortunately Sad It's only tackled the physical heavy bleeding side of things not the hormonal cycle.

gingeme · 22/08/2014 09:53

Well that's one thing I guess. I'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully my letter will come soon with my date . I've got a feeling I'll end up with a hysterectomy at some point though. I just seemed to have tried everything else and they keep me dangling along Hmm . I'm coming back as a man in my next life Wink

Good luck gingeme. There's been lots of positive stories on here too Smile

gingeme · 22/08/2014 19:37

Thanks chicky yeah there has been. Good luck to you too xx

Good evening all. I have my hospital date for Monday 15th September Shock Could anybody tell me if it is sore after its done? I realise there is a watery discharge and that most of you returned to work pretty much straight after but is it sore? Also how long did you leave it before you had sex after too ?

OP posts:
fortyplus · 05/09/2014 23:51

I had one some years ago and have posted loads about it. Total miracle cure for me - literally transformed my life. However it doesn't work as well for everyone - I have 2 colleagues who have been disappointed, one of whom had a hysterectomy a few months later.

Don't have sex till the discharge has stopped.

fortyplus · 05/09/2014 23:52

ps Not sore at all afterwards - I was told I might have period/cramping pain but didn't.

gingeme · 06/09/2014 09:23

fortyplus you have totally put my mind at rest . Thankyou Grin

OP posts:
puddingisgood · 06/09/2014 09:40

Hardly any pain at all. The hospital gave me some pain pills, and I took one later the same day and that was all I needed. Felt a bit tired from the anaesthetic, but not so much that I was debilitated.
It's worth a try gingeme, you might be pleasantly surprised!

gingeme · 06/09/2014 09:46

Hopefully. Though it is more my hormones that are my problem rather than the bleeding although very heavy. I have a feeling I'll still need a hysterectomy somewhere down the line Sad
