I really really don't want to go for my hospital appointment tomorrow afternoon.

about 6 months ago, my consultant persuaded me to have the mirena coil fitted.

I am due to have it done tomorrow and REALLY REALLY don't want it done, but he has said that he won't do any other treatment until I at least give it a go.

I've been a mess all day, I feel so sick at the thought of having it done.

I am really really dreading it.

Any advice - tips?

Hi Radley, just seen this thread .
I had an endometrial ablation done last month for heavy periods - v. probably using the device that lilymolly has described.
It was a brief procedure under GA, I was done as a day case.
I was terrified of the GA, and the staff were very kind to me.
Endometrial ablation is supposedly 80% effective in curing heavy periods in women who are not going to have any more children, and it has certainly worked for me.
It is a much less serious procedure than a hysterectomy, obviously - and no coil either.
If you do not want a coil fitted this afternoon why not ask your consultant if there is a reason for you not having an endometrial ablation done...
I hate men in bow ties messing with my ladybits but oh boy this was worth it, and being out cold meant I knew nothing about any of it (apart from waking up with an iodine-stained fanjo)
Good luck this afternoon whatever you decide. Sorry you are feeling so petrified, I do know the feeling.

Marino Sounds exactly like thermachoice, but there are a few ablation techniques out there.
I too would ask the consultant why he will not do this. I know Mirena is the first treatment choice, but if you do not want mirena then endometrial ablation is a very good option BEFORE hysterectomy.

Radley, I had the first referral in March, reported back for test results in May, could have been done in June/July but asked for and got August as it was more convenient all round.
This in a not very stunning NHS Trust-waiting list wise.

lilymolly · 18/09/2006 11:49

Oh glad you will ask about it- Promise I am not touting for business!! stopped selling it 3 years ago!!! You may not have to wait too long, could you afford to go private?

3littlefrogs · 18/09/2006 11:59

Mirena is the treatment of choice for a 33 yr old because it is reversable. Too many doctors being sued these days, so all being very cautious. Ablation and hysterectomy are not reversable, so would not be first choice in a young woman, in case, God forbid, anything tragic happened, and she wanted to have more children. I am sure that is why the consultant has offered this tretment first, not because he wants to be a bully.
