What are you using to take the temp? If an ear thermometer they can often give high readings. How old is ds?

38 C is not worryingly high. It depends how high it goes up to (you said 38 C and above). He will be lethargic with a temperature of 38 so don't read anything else into that. I would keep going with the medication and hope that tomorrow the temperature comes down. If he is very young, see a doctor tomorrow if it doesn't.

How old ?

liquidclocks · 03/09/2006 20:18

How old is DS cholchlo? I'd call NHS direct or your out of hours service if it were my DS and I couldn't get his temp down - assume you've done the stripping to his nappy and keeping him cool as well?

liquidclocks · 03/09/2006 20:18

sorry - assuming still in nappies there!

chlochlo · 03/09/2006 21:03

He's 20 months i was using an under the arm thermometer from mothercare the highest its been is 38.4 he's got an average temperature of 36.5 i've done the cooling down and he is asleep with just nappy on.

I think it sounds as though you are on top of the situation. Hope he is better tomorrow!

chlochlo · 04/09/2006 20:45

Still had temperature all day but not showing any other signs of illness how long should i leave him before seeing gp?

OP posts:
Janbo25 · 04/09/2006 20:55

an average temp of 36.5 is absolutely normal, and to be honest 38.4 isn't very at all, I would just keep monitoring and see how you go

chlochlo · 04/09/2006 21:01

By average i meant when he is well. His temp today has been slightly higher than yesterday and he's slept most of the day, i don't want to bother gp over nothing as we see him alot over other health issues. Just wondered how long i can keep the calpol nurofen going.

I would probably give nhs direct a ring then and get there advice especially if you say it is higher today and he is more lethargic

nearlythree · 04/09/2006 21:04

See your gp. A high temp and lethergy isn't 'nothing', even if the only treatment is what you are already doing.

Could he have been exposed to CP?

OP posts:
Janbo25 · 04/09/2006 21:11

it may still be worth ringing nhs tonight for some info from them

chlochlo · 04/09/2006 21:14

Don't know about ringing nhs direct never had much luck from them ended up in hospital after nhs doctor told us to go home and put ds to bed

OP posts:
nearlythree · 04/09/2006 21:25

Not a huge NHS direct fan either after they told me ds had a 1 in 5 chance of dying if he got CP as a newborn! Scared me witless!

Yes, wake him to give him medicine. Work out the maximum dose of both he can have, write it down and give it to him at evenly-spaced intervals. Do you have an out-of-hours surgery you could ring?

chlochlo · 04/09/2006 21:31

No it puts you straight through to nhs direct just been to check on him and the only way i can describe what he's doing is holding his breath then panting? there is no wheeze just sort of gasps?????

OP posts:
Janbo25 · 04/09/2006 21:33

Does he still have a temp at the moment?

nearlythree · 04/09/2006 21:33

If you are concerned ring your local hospital, and ask for paediatric a&e.

Can you wake him, get him to talk to you?

chlochlo · 04/09/2006 21:38

Yeah still feels hot but is sleeping soundly should i take blanket off not sure cos his little feet are cold Dp doesn't seem too concerned so perhaps being over protective.

OP posts:
nearlythree · 04/09/2006 21:41

Blanket off. Put socks on if necessary.

chlochlo · 04/09/2006 21:45

Just gave him nurofen and five puffs of blue inhalor didn't even try to fight he's got his socks on.

Think you should phone NHS direct. Taking the temp under the arm should have another degree added to it - so 37.6 for example becomes 38.6. NHS direct will be able to help you further. It concerns me that his feet are cold as it implies he is peripherally shut down - that is to say his body is working hard to fight the infection - and he probably needs some kind of anitibiotics. Also worth telling NHS direct if the temp is before or after the calpol/nurofen as although it helps to bring down the temp, it also masks the temperature the body needs to reach to fight the infection. Do you have the number?
