Does he have any rash? You should be vigilant for menigitis signs.

I hope things take a turn for the better.

If you are in doubt about meningitis, you can phone 999, they'll send a paramedic to you.

dinny · 04/09/2006 21:49

I'd definitely do what Flossam says and phone NHS Direct asap. Hope he's better soon.

chlochlo · 04/09/2006 21:51

Feel mean now for not taking him to gp today

dinny · 04/09/2006 21:51

Yes, especially as his breathing is laboured and feet are cold. If you are worried (trust you insinct, no-one will think you're time-wasting) phone 999 as Mum2funkydude says.

Mum2FunkyDude · 04/09/2006 21:56

Babies get very sick very quickly. If he is fighting a bacterial infection something like an hour or two can be devastating to his body. Rather be over cautious.

chlochlo · 04/09/2006 21:56

You are all stars if nurofen doesn't take it down this time i'll get further advice i will keep you all posted.

If you can recheck his temp

chlochlo · 04/09/2006 21:59

but this is second day off temp what other symptoms did your dd have.

Flossam · 04/09/2006 22:00

Don't feel guilty, he didn't have these symptoms earlier and I think you end up getting rather more anxious at night as you aren't always with them like you are in the day. Just give them a call - no need to feel bad at all.

chlochlo - is the panting/gasping constant - sounds like my DS just before we took him to hospital a few months ago - PLEASE if he still has that high temp, is out of sorts and is not breathing normally take him to hospital - they can give steroids that you can't that will make him feel better as well as checking him over properly.

liquidclocks · 04/09/2006 22:03

btw - DS had pneumonia and we were umming an ahhing whether to take him or not too. Very glad we did.

chlochlo · 04/09/2006 22:05

His breathing isn't as bad still fast we have got a supply of the pink steriods at home is it them you are talking about lc

Janbo25 · 04/09/2006 22:07

Breathing heavy with a temp is normal however shouldn't really have a temp after having nurofen, what is his temp now?

nearlythree · 04/09/2006 22:07

Go to a&e or ring for a paramedic. Temp isn't the only indicator of illness.

liquidclocks · 04/09/2006 22:09

Not sure of colour but definitely hospital type dose. DS was 20 months at the time - if he's showing any signs of breathing difficulting especially gasping/grunting/pulling in below the ribs you need to get him seen - sorry if I'm coming on a bit strong, DS has had pneumonia twice now and the earlier something like that is treated the better because it can scar the lungs. If it's nothing then the wort that happens is you come home feeling relieved.

Flossam · 04/09/2006 22:10

Wouldn't self medicate with steriods for this. Have you rung them? Jambo - respiration is one of the major ways of assessing illness - heavy breathing with a temp is not unusual per say, but clubbed together with cold feet as well I think it is fair to say this little boys temperature is comprimising him.

nearlythree · 04/09/2006 22:12

My friend's ds died with meningitis earlier this yr - this doesn't sound like it but even so better to be sure.

Can't believe you don't have out of hours gp.

Janbo25 · 04/09/2006 22:13

Yes I do agree however my ds who is 19months unfortunately suffers from fevers alot and also febrile convulsions so quite often end up at hospital with him, sometimes no real cause, but each time he breaths very heavily and fast and both his hands and feet are very cold. Although I do agree with you that it can be an indication of something more serious I know my ds's worried the hospital a couple of times because of it resulting in tests for blood poisoning etc.

Janbo25 · 04/09/2006 22:14

thats horrible to hear nearlythree how old was he?

dinny · 04/09/2006 22:15

Just take him to A&E or call 999 - time could be of the essence (hopeflly not, but always better safe than sorry).

Flossam · 04/09/2006 22:16

Jambo. My DS dosen't often suffer from them but had febrile convulsions, cold feet, burning body lethargic and went on to be diagnosed with toxic shock. I knew he was in shock from being an ITU nurse so was doing my nut in. Chloco - please don't worry about what I have just said _ DS had been burnt which is what lead to this. However I would still like to hear you have phoned?

carol3 · 04/09/2006 22:17

Chlochlo trust your instincts no one ever minds checking out a baby. As every one says, they can go down hill very quickly so much better to but your mind at rest.

liquidclocks · 04/09/2006 22:17

Chlochlo - if you decide not to take him anywhere tonight but he's not better in the morning you will take him to the GP won't you, regardless of whether there's an appointment free? Fever that's not coming down with nurofen and steroids along with the other symptoms you've mentioned really needs to be addressed. I know by 20 months you think they're resilient little souls but they're not yet and being over-cautious is the right side of the spectrum.
