I have a doctors appointment at 4.40.
I've had three previous lumps removed, last one was six years ago. They were all fibroid adenomas.
I'm already very ill and waiting for an op to remove a kidney stone.
Please cross fingers fanjos and norks that this will be ok.

Hi Noddy! Yes it's rather a big one, this is my third, the last one was ten years ago, I passed that one and they said there was another one that wasn't causing any problems, so they left it, it's probably been growing all that time.
They tried to start me on lithotripsy but each time I went (three times) I had a urine infection so they didn't do it.
I had a pre op couple of weeks ago and a meeting with the anesthetist yesterday, I also have anaphalaxis to latex and other stuff.
I don't feel like they are sorting it quick enough.
This nephrostomy bag is horrid, I'm sure I won't be infection free until it has gone.
I remember reading that you had a successful kidney transplant, sorry you've still got some stones, how was your recovery from the transplant?

What a spiteful person your MIL is OJ. I'm sorry she is still giving you problems. You really have had a rough time. Hope things can improve for you soon Thanks

noddyholder · 02/05/2014 19:23

OJ I have had 2 transplants the last one in 2000 Ihad it on a friday home wednesday it was really well done they were brilliant. I will have had it 14 years on 27 July Smile. The stones are unrelated and caused by repeated infection due to alkaline urine (sorry) and the stones grew easily in it. SO I now have high strength cranberry every night and have been infection free since 2009. Sometimes they hurt though and if it continues they may remove the kidney (my new kidney is stone free atm)

onlyjoking9329 · 02/05/2014 21:11

Sounds like the cranberry is working for you, do you just have the juice or the tablets? I've been drinking the stuff for ages at least a carton per day.
I'm sure it's the repeated infections that have caused my stones, thou at the moment it's the bag that's causing the infections.
Have you found anything else that's helpful for avoiding infections?
Do you get regular scans?

OP posts:
noddyholder · 02/05/2014 22:00

I had repeated infections and it was the type of infection that caused the stones. I jypust kept getting one after the other. I started having tea tree baths daily and then high strength cranberry very last thing at night. The acidic urine won't let the stones grow. Docs amazed I was about to have prophylactic anti b therapy when infections stopped. What are your stones made of

onlyjoking9329 · 04/05/2014 13:38

Thanks, I will try the tea tree baths, I read somewhere that orange juice was good because of the acidic content.

OP posts:
onlyjoking9329 · 04/05/2014 13:39

I've no idea what my stones are made of, I'm guessing once surgery is done they will have a clear idea.

Have you seen this site, OJ? kidneystonewebsite.com/Pages/KidneyStone_4.shtml
Tea and leafy green veg could be contributing, depending on your stone composition. Did you have your previous ones analysed?

onlyjoking9329 · 04/05/2014 14:19

Thanks I'll have a look at that thumb, I read somewhere that too much calcium was bad for stones.

OP posts:
Thumbwitch · 04/05/2014 14:21

Can be, yes - the site says that the commonest component of the stones is calcium oxalate, the oxalate coming from dark green leafy veg, and combining with calcium in the body. Calcium oxalate is not very soluble, hence its tendency to precipitate out and create stones.

onlyjoking9329 · 04/05/2014 14:36

It says vitamin C &D can cause it too, is anything safe?,
It says staying active helps, I can't breathe in without pain, zero chance of much in the way of mobility, tis tourtue, the weather is lovely and my Harley is sitting waiting to be ridden. Sad

OP posts:
Thumbwitch · 04/05/2014 14:49

Well vitamin D helps with calcium absorption, so I guess that's where that comes from; not sure about the vitamin C involvement though! Confused

But there IS something I've learnt recently, not sure how it's going to help with kidney stones you already have but it might help prevent more: there is a protein in our bodies called osteocalcin, whose purpose is to place calcium where it is needed, in the bones, and keep it out of places it isn't supposed to be, including arteries (and possibly kidneys!). Osteocalcin is activated by vitamin K2, menaquinone. This is found in animal fats, primarily grass-fed animals - so most UK cows :). Real butter, milk, beef fat, lamb fat and grass-fed chicken egg yolks all have good levels of menaquinone, so these could help in the future to keep your calcium where it belongs and possibly reduce your risk of future stones. This is not entirely new research but it is not well known - too many scientists have overlooked the differences between vits K1 and K2 over the years and the different sources.

Thumbwitch · 04/05/2014 14:51

Gah, dimness!

Ascorbate (vit C) helps increase absorption of the oxalate portion of the calcium oxalate. I forgot that bit.

noddyholder · 04/05/2014 14:52

Mine are struvite stones and acidic definitely slowly dissolves them hence the cranberry.

onlyjoking9329 · 04/05/2014 15:13

Wow thanks all interesting stuff, who knew kidneys were so complicated, after all the trouble this one has caused I will be sure not to encourage another stone.

OJ , how are you getting on ?

onlyjoking9329 · 10/05/2014 22:43

Hello Mummylin!
Thanks for asking. I'm not very good, my trachy scar is itching like mad and looks a mess andcan't seem to be rid of kidney/urine infections.
Tom changed my bag today the wound is very angry looking, it might be thrush again due to antibiotics.
The medical supply place has sent me the wrong things they should have sent nephrostomy bags, they've sent dressit packs instead, I can't do anything about it till Monday, I only have one bag left. Let's hope it doesn't spring a leak. The district nurse and GPs don't keep the bags.
Will have to go to hospital if I run out.
It's annoying, it's wearing the bag that's responsible for the infections.
I've not been able to have a soak in the bath since January, will be so excited to have a lovely bubble bath.

mummylin2495 · 10/05/2014 22:53

Oh dear OJ, so anti biotics which are meant to be treating you are causing you other problems . Can't win can you. It's a nuisance about your bags, by aunt has colostomy bags but I think she gets everything delivered and has quite a large stock. It's very difficult snt it. I'm sure A & E would be able to help you out if necessary . So how much longer till you get anything else done. I can understand your longing to sak in the bath, especially having to wait so long for it. When you can finally have one , you will have to have bubbles, candles and a glass of champagne ! Hope your family is doing ok. X

onlyjoking9329 · 10/05/2014 23:20

Am waiting on an operation date, I hope it's soon, it's being me down, I'm missing out on loads, get boring and lonely especially when the world appears to be asleep.
We are desperate to have holiday but I don't know when I'll be better, insurance will be shocking too.
We are desparate to get out on the Harley and take the camper van out somewhere.

OP posts:
YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 10/05/2014 23:52

I am wishing you well, onlyjoking and soaking in a lovely warm bubble bath with candles around you and a good book to hand. Or maybe a TV in the wall in front of you. A holiday somewhere hot and beautiful and luxurious with fun friends and family where you all have a great time, and have a great home to return to, all well with all this beind you and in your past.

Is there someone there who could nip down to the hospital and collect some bags for you?

mummylin2495 · 10/05/2014 23:58

I hope you hear soon OJ. The waiting must be awful. Once you have an actual date I'm sure you will feel relieved that an end is in sight, then you can start living again

mummylin2495 · 16/05/2014 10:31

Hi OJ , hope you have heard something by now and that you aren't suffering too much at the moment.

onlyjoking9329 · 19/05/2014 04:05

Hello!
I've been really ill again, Gp came out to see me last Monday as I couldn't stop shaking whilst repeatedly throwing up.
I was treated once more to the blue light fast transportation system.
I had a temperature of 39.8 and once again septicemia, this time the treatment started quickly and although I had some problems with both liver and kidney function I at least avoided the ICU unit.
I've had three different infections whilst in there and that's not counting the systematic uro-sepsis.
I am now waiting for an appointment to go in and have an anaesthetic in order to put a new tube from my kidney out into my rather fetching nephrostomy. I'm also waiting from a date for the boulder removal, if I get the op date first them I won't need to have the stent removed.
The kids were all fine except for Elliot who rang me each morning and said he was glad that I had answered the phone as he said that was indeed solid proof That I wasn't dead,yet.......... Wink

OP posts:
NormaStanleyFletcher · 19/05/2014 06:39

Oh OJ. So pleased to hear that you are not dead yet Wink

Sounds like you are going through a really tough time.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 19/05/2014 07:41

Glad you're alive. While I am glad that the NHS seems to be functioning well enough to pull out all the stops for you, this isn't the holiday bubble bath I ordered for you. :(
