Welcome to thread 8 (again - see below) of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

With apologies for confusion in thread numbers - an earlier thread was called part 7 but it was actually the 6th thread.

Here are the previous threads:

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

I need advice please, I had the catheter put back in due to failed to void they call it here (couldn't wee) so after 2hrs of not listening to me telling them I was busting (they thought it was just swelling) they finally called the doctor who said my bladder had filled up past bellybutton to get a catheter in asap. 1200 mls came out in under 20mins ouch. Anyway my question is my catheter is burning me and hurting all night just like yesterday when they tried to remove it, does anyone have experience in this and did you have to get it out or try something I'm in agony but scared of what happened yesterday thankyou everyone

Ridingthegravytrain · 18/11/2015 21:10

Sorry to hear you're in pain. I think the removing and inserting really messes with the urethtra and this is causing pain. I'm assuming you're on or have had prophylactic anti bs so it's unlikely infected?

Did you have any kind of urethral or bladder sling? Sometimes these are too tight and need to be loosened in order to wee properly

If it's any consolation I only had posterior repair and it took weeks before I could wee properly due to swelling and cath irritation so as you've had anterior too I know it can be bad

There's a really good Facebook page you can join if you search pelvic organ prolapse, you will get lots of support and advice and its private

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 18/11/2015 23:20

Sorry to hear that Waiting, I don't really know the answer, but hope things improve soon. Agree about the FB group, it's a lot busier than this group and so, so helpful and supportive.

waiting4relief · 19/11/2015 00:00

Thankyou you were right I have an infection so I am now on iv antibiotics they think it is a bladder infection so have sent the tests of and covered me with a broad antibiotics until they come back already starting to feel better thankyou for all the support I don't have facebook so this has been my lifeline

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 19/11/2015 00:09

I'm out, there was no pain at first but now it's really bad I can't sleep and morphine isn't touching it. Fingers crossed it will improve soon.

Waiting I hope the anti bis kick in soon. X

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 19/11/2015 00:11

Wating I don't have FB either but the Patient website has a prolapse forum and the posters are really helpful.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 19/11/2015 00:12

Hope it eases soon Addicted, you too Waiting.

waiting4relief · 19/11/2015 01:14

Hotbaths see if they have suppository with voltarin in it normally I wouldn't want to use one but these really take the pressure of the swelling and pain right down

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 19/11/2015 06:52

Morning Waiting, how are you? Have you got the catheter still back in?

They gave me codeine on top of the morphine and eventual that kicked in and I got some sleep.

Got the pack and catheter out now but not been to wee yet, am scared to get up everything really hurtsSad
God knows how some people say they have no pain and are up and dressed the next day.

sadie9 · 19/11/2015 10:43

Hi Ladies, please keep asking for pain relief. They will find you something they can top you up with. Those suppositories I remember were great, as they really target the bottom area. Hopefully the weeing will go okay today. A tip I found good was to blow through your mouth like you are blowing into a straw while you are attempting to wee.
Also remember if you have a bad patch, remind yourself I won't always feel like I do now. Your mind will tell you everything will always be terrible but it won't. In a week's time you'll be in a completely different place. There is a sense of panic with the catheter and weeing, specially if you keep thinking I have to get out of here and home to the kids.
Also remember when you get home, you will get this sudden sense of oh my god I am so helpless and wrecked, because you suddenly notice the difference in your mobility from before and after the op. You may feel tearful. That's ok and normal. Once you are home will will make great progress. We can discuss that later, for now just take it half hour by half hour.

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 19/11/2015 15:21

Sadie that's a lovely post, thank you. You are so right that it won't be like this forever. I haven't managed to wee yet so they had to drain it off hopefully my bladder will wake up soon.

waiting4relief · 19/11/2015 16:18

Same here no wee yet but oh GOd do I have an update and a half for you all. On top of all the pain I have been suffering with the catheter now I need to move my bowels but they are so swollen that only wind is getting through and that hurts. I feel out of bed yesterday and because I have a low blood count and low blood pressure (after losing 1 litre) today they will do blood test for iron and blood count and ultrasound to see why my bladder is having such problems. I can't wait for a painless day glad to hear hotbaths that you finally got comfortable, keep in touch.

waiting4relief · 19/11/2015 17:57

I moved my bowels sadly in my bed but I don't care it feels better I had a shower and I am expressing for bub , I had a hematoma on my right labia so that is now resolving will keep you updated

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 19/11/2015 22:08

Waiting that sounds awful, I wouldn't care either if I went in my bed. Have you seen your baby yet?

I couldn't wee at all so catheter is back in and try again tomorrow.

Got this is bloody painful and one of the nurses seemed to imply I shouldn't be lying in bed! Yeah because I really want to sit on a hard chair after somebody's taken a scalpel to my bits!

Hope you get a good rest and we both make better progress tomorrow and very soon this will be a distant memory!

waiting4relief · 20/11/2015 02:42

I FINALLY WEE thankyou God. Hotbaths when you try again tomorrow please don't wait to long to try its easier the1st time if you aren't too full and take your time I thought it wasn't going to work but just before I gave up it flowed very slowly 200mls good luck I'm thinking of you

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 20/11/2015 08:36

Congrats! My catheter is out so waiting for a wee to occur!

How are you finding the pain? Im only just about getting it under control it's much worse than I expected I think it's the back wall that hurts the most.

waiting4relief · 20/11/2015 10:11

Same here back wall is the worst, I have just had the catheter put back in as when they did a ultrasound I wasn't completely emptying so 2 more days and then possibly going home with a catheter. Hotbaths how did you go? Hubby brings bub in for a few hours everyday but milk has gone down a bit I need to pick it back up when I get home.

waiting4relief · 20/11/2015 10:25

Thought I better put this out there for anyone in my situation (breastfeeding) they think because of breastfeeding my estrogen was really low so that could be why I bleed so significantly so I will be given estrogen pessary to counteract the estrogen levels I have been pregnant and breastfeeding inbetween pregnancies with out a break for 15yrs so it has aged my tissues, he said he doesn't think I should stop but need to be aware and that when I do stop breastfeeding I will recover as I am only 34 best wishes to everyone it is really painfull but I keep trying to remind myself how I felt before the op and know I had to try this so no regrets

sadie9 · 20/11/2015 11:56

Keep the faith, you are only a couple of days over it. It is very early days. If they keep you in extra days, at least you are getting a good rest with everything handed to you and all the crap telly you can manage. If you can wee at all it will improve over time hopefully very quickly. Getting up and about too if you are able, helps with everything and the body feeling like its getting back to its old self. Will you be getting a visit from the physio before you go home, did they say? You will feel like it hasn't worked for a while after as the swelling is still inside. When you sit you will still feel like you are sitting on a lumpy thing for a while, possibly. When you go home, when you sit on a kitchen chair you will be sitting on one cheek and then the other type of thing for a couple of weeks. Not painful, just something there till all the swelling goes down.

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 20/11/2015 12:15

I had a thread about breastfeeding and estrogen as I was advised that giving up breastfeeding would help the prolapse but I wasn't convinced. I did give up 5 months ago and it didn't improve it or at least I couldn't see or feel any improvement. My physio was shocked that they would operate without waiting a full 6-8 months to see how much of the tissue had "bounced back" after stopping.

I haven't managed to wee so I'm going home today with a catheter for 5 days then back in to try again.Sad

I'm really shattered and still in lots of pain, looking forward to feeling normal again soon. Hope you get home soon. x

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 20/11/2015 12:16

Sadie I like your pic, that is mostly how my plans go!

waiting4relief · 20/11/2015 13:21

Sadie9 and hotbaths you are both so right, my nurse told me the estrogen line is a bit of so so he is not convinced. Everything that could go wrong with this op has so I hope it doesn't put anyone off the op because the op went well its just that all the rare complications that could happen has to me and I choose to remain positive believing that all will be right in the end thanks girls

gottagetthroughthis · 20/11/2015 16:46

addicted & waiting am thinking of you both, it is very early days so hold in there - SAdie9 great words of wisdom/support having been through it yourself xx

Did anyone ever have a real heaviness in their tummy like a pregnant feel? I have had this for the past week or so and it is soo uncomfortable.

Have had ring pessary fitted today - about 1 hour ago at this stage and feels ok Wink she said to try it for my symptoms for about 6 weeks and if it fits/feels ok in that time she will teach me how to put in for day/take out at night (not looking forward to that but at 55 just want to feel a little normal) She also says my prolapse is not too bad and am very young to have pessary but I am willing to give it a try. also said there are other things can go wrong that have similar symptoms (that worried me a little)Hmm so have to go back in 3 months or sooner if I need to - it's expensive so think I will ask at the docs to send me through NHS

Gottagetthroughthis yes I had that heavy period like feeling, I know exactly what that feels like, that is how it started for me. How are you doing with the pessary?

waiting4relief · 21/11/2015 20:23

I am still in hospital, 5 days now had only planned for a one night stay! I am hoping to go home later today I have to try and wee again or I will go home with a catheter will let you know how it all goes
