Welcome to thread 8 (again - see below) of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

With apologies for confusion in thread numbers - an earlier thread was called part 7 but it was actually the 6th thread.

Here are the previous threads:

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

I was but she was 18months so I fed her when I got out after 2 days

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 12/11/2015 23:34

I didn't drive for several weeks afterwards. Waited at least 8 weeks to DTD. Definite improvement in that department! I didn't get constipation but it's not something I've ever had a problem with, however pre-op I did frequently have to push on the rectocele to create a straight exit route, nice not
having to do that any more.

Another tip is slip on shoes for afterwards and cut your toenails as you won't want to bend to do it for a couple of weeks at least. A trimmed ladygarden is easier to keep clean too.

I went back to work (p/t office job) at 7 weeks and still found my seat uncomfy after an hour or so, and I still tired easily. 12 weeks was when I felt fully recovered. Apparently fulll healing takes 6 months or so, so you need to take care when resuming exercise, manual handling etc.

Sadie may I ask what age you are? I am 55 and terrified. so glad of all the girls on here discussing I missed it for a while - going to go back on all the threads and read as I remember a lady getting a pessary - would love to try that first.
whoknows I remember reading your posts also great to hear you are still doing well. Smile

hi Gottaget, I am 50. See what the doc says on Monday, they may be able to do another small op to get you a bit better. Sometimes if one is repaired and not the other, the one that wasn't repaired gets 'worse' as it now has room to flop down more as such. Pessary might work for you if you can get one the right size to fit comfortably.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 13/11/2015 20:18

Thanks Gotta. I posted a lot for a year or so, but reached a point where I felt I had posted everything I knew many times over and to be honest I was just tired of thinking about prolapses all the time. Of course not a day goes by when I don't think about it a little, but it is not at the forefront of my mind right now. It was a shame the threads went so quiet, so I was pleased to see it pop back up this week, I am happy to chip in now and again.

waiting4relief · 14/11/2015 00:20

Thankyou Ridingthegravytrain I was wondering if I was the only one with a breastfeeding bub at the time of the op. I was told I could only have this op at this age (34) if I agree on having the mirenda coil fitted to prevent another pregnancy. I am going in for op in 3 days and feeling nervous about coping with the pain afterwards and being able to breastfeed bub (laying down). Did anyone take a laxative before the op?
Thank you everyone, your experience is invaluable Smile

Ridingthegravytrain · 14/11/2015 07:40

I didn't take a laxative but I was so anxious it worked as a natural laxative!
How old is your baby? I could only really lie on my side post op anyway so feeding in that position was fine

If you suffer from constipation then watch out for morphine and codeine drugs as they really clog you up. The docs gave me lactulose and fybogel to take but the only thing that got me going (3 days post op and I was terrified) was a huge laxative dose of milk of magnesia

I wish you all the best and no lifting/bending or hoovering etc for as long as you possibly can!!

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 14/11/2015 08:07

Hi waiting - I'm having a repair op next week too. I hope it goes well for you x

waiting4relief · 14/11/2015 10:24

gravy I will take your advice in regards to no lifting/hoovering,
bub is 11mnths old so a bit of a handful but I have a lot of help. I think nerves have got the best of me as I have been visiting the bathroom a lot the last couple of days so maybe I don't need any laxative before op.Blush

Ridingthegravytrain · 17/11/2015 19:12

The last thing you need to get is mastitis!

Yes I found the pack awful. You will be amazed how much comes out! Cath removal is a relief too

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 17/11/2015 19:43

Wow you are a hero still expressing hope you get some rest tonight and the pack is out soon. I'm dreading that bit...

waiting4relief · 18/11/2015 04:49

I have failed the wee test so after 2 hrs the catheter was put back in place, I was so relieved to have 1200mls taken off in under 20mins oh thank god. So now I have to wait until I can try to wee again I am scared I wish I could go home with the catheter will keep you all updated, hotbaths I am thinking of you and I want you to know we are stronger then we think.

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 18/11/2015 07:00

Waiting good morning, I think it's really normal to not be able to wee straight away. Are they taking good care of you?

Not long for me now, will keep you posted.

waiting4relief · 18/11/2015 10:39

Had to have catheter put back so I am staying a extra night. I am so glad that I have done the op as in the long run this pain is for recovery rather then just injury and honestly they try to keep you as comfortable as possible. You are a strong woman hotbaths and I cant wait to hear from you after your op

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 18/11/2015 13:56

Waiting that's really good to hear you are glad you've done it and an extra night rest might be helpful with a little one at home.

Has it been very painful?

I'm still waiting last on the list...

waiting4relief · 18/11/2015 14:13

I will be totally honest its very uncomfortable I won't lie, but they quickly get on top of the pain so you will be in and out of total awareness. I had lovely nurse's 1st night but I will tell all about tonight after you will be fine hotbaths I'll be thinking and praying for you

waiting4relief · 18/11/2015 14:16

Just remember hotbaths that this is your body and you know how you feel and when you need anything ask it makes it alot more tolerable.

sadie9 · 18/11/2015 15:38

Good woman Waiting4, Best of luck AddictedToHBaths, you will be delighted to wake up with it over you. Get the pain relief as much as you can at any kind of twinges afterwards. Doc told me we have a hospital full up of drugs here, do not be in any discomfort.
As it is all swollen inside no wonder the weeing can be delayed at first. Also saves you getting out of bed so you can rest up. Take it hour by hour Ladies, it will all come good in the end. It is like a tunnel, there will be light at the end so take heart. Take it as slowly as you can. Think of it this way - Go Slow Now so I can Go Fast Later.
