Urgent! What works for chronic constipation to the point I simply can't go?

Not been to the toilet for over a week now. Got to the stage where I cannot eat. Nothing is working I have tried exlax chocolate, suppositories, laxido (8 sachets) & dulcalax pico pearles plus lots of water. The out of hours GP prescribed the pico pearles last night & I took them about 10 1/2 hours ago as well as the max dose of laxiod again & suppositories. Supposed to work within 6 to 12 hours, still nothing.. What else can I try? I don't want to spend Christmas day on the toilet or unable to eat. :(

I sometimes suffer now, and find that pushing on perimium helps things out too.

What a subject to be such an expert on Xmas Grin

Could you not get a cab to the hospital right now? Seems silly to wait for your dp then go to the a&e.
Just imagine you wait around for ages at home, instead you could be waiting for your turn at the hospital... Chances are they won't see you for ages and won't sort you out straight away.
Am only concerned about you. when it all comes out, you would want it I guess asap...
Best of luck

I really would not wait too much longer. Is there any way you can get to A&E yourself. Get a taxi?
I hate to make you feel worse but hospitals are just going to get busier and busier as the day goes on. From lunchtime you will start getting the drink related casualties too. The sooner you get there the sooner you will get seen.

Really feel for you. Good luck.

Definitely don't go to MIL's tomorrow. Don't want to doom monger but you can't be sure you won't get admitted to hospital today. Really hope it won't come to that, obviously.

You'll need your own house and your own bathroom for the foreseeable. Keep us updated eh? Smile

yes if you think you need A&E I would go now if there is no improvement as pp said there is going to be a long wait and you might as well get started. If you can get there by taxi do, although public transport is not a good idea!

I agree you should just get a cab and go now. You'll get in the queue sooner.

Good luck!

GP said to take the picolax, and if it didn't work use another - and, if still no "gut gift" within a couple of hours then a+E.

So, this is now a couple of hours - just wanting you to be careful of slipping into not following advice because of waiting for a lift from DH.

Am impressed at the stubbornness of your colon.

Still waiting. Enema did nothing. :(

You have my sympathies, I was admitted to hospital as a teenager with this. It was over 2 weeks since I'd been by the time it was sorted and it was absolute agony. Can't remember what eventually shifted it, but I know I had several enimas.
I wouldn't be going to family's tomorrow though that's for sure.
Best wishes for a festive poo.

I agree with cupoftea - the Christmas arrival most eagerly anticipated is now some poo. Please don't put yourself through the additional discomfort of being at someone else's house. Time to get to A&E, before the majority of the drunks hit in a couple of hours.

Dear god, I hope you get sorted soon!

Just heard from dp. He is being turned around in his car in way back because of flooding. Oh ffs! Hopefully they allow him through. Might end up walking to a & e at this rate. :(

Please go to a&e, don't wait for dp to return, or ask a friend to drive you. Before you spend ages there because of the amount of people overdoing the drink later on today.
Hope it gets sorted soon!

Can you get a taxi to a and e? Or a friend?

Report
tribpot · 24/12/2013 16:39

Time to get yourself there - he could be some time and you really don't want to be in A&E later.

gravity helps as well. I know it sounds stupid but keep standing up straight with every 5 mins or so, give a gentle push - still stood up. you will probably feel a bit sick but it does work. If it's high up it will take longer.

Pixiedust1973 · 24/12/2013 16:57

Dp had to turn back. Have called a cab but it's not coming until about 515, if it turns up. Will probably be stuck in hospital till midnight at this rate. :(

Oh hell, just what you need. Still, focus on the immediate problem and get yourself there. One day this will be a good story - the crappy Christmas - but I appreciate it isn't when you're living it.

Keep posting, plenty of us are willing your bowels to co-operate during this festive season!

Good luck op.
I would pack a small bag with my overnight essentials just in case. I work on the basis of if I have it with me then I wont need it!!

I hope you are ok and this doesn't totally ruin your Christmas, but you might deserve a nice day out or something once you are feeling better.
