The top of my right boob was a bit sore Weds night and when I rubbed it I felt a sort of lump. Not round, but something there. Decided not to waste any time worrying and got an appt next afternoon with my GP. She isn't sure what it is, said it isn't a typical lump and if I was 21 she wouldn't refer me but just watch and wait, but as I'm 44 she's going to refer me to the Breast clinic. I'll have a mammogram and maybe other tests.

I'm going from being completely freaked out by it to being OK. My plan is to keep busy so I don't think about it.

I know how you feel surfermum,I went through this and finally got the all clear on june 5th this year.I had a mammogram and then was called back for an ultrasound and needle biopsy.
The waiting is agony,I tried not to think about it but realised when it was all over that I'd obvioiusly been in a stressed trancelike state as I'd forgotten loads of birthdays and such things.I was exhausted from the stress.
I hope you get seen really soon , the staff at the clinic were marvellous, hardly waited at all really impressive.
Oh and I had pain which apparently was a good indicator that it would be nothing sinister.

Just seen this Surfermum and have my fingers firmly crossed for you. A friend has just been through this and is also a medical secretary. She did the same thing about the quickly bit too ! (results were absolutely fine)

Surfermum · 09/07/2006 19:46

Thank you kittypickle, ggirl and jellynump. My appointment has come through for tomorrow morning. Well, when I say come through, I ended up ringing the hospital on Fri afternoon as I still had had no appt. It seems my referral letter was faxed to the hospital then lost . I then got back onto the surgery to ask them to fax another to be told "well the secretary's off this afternoon". I lost it - which I have never done to anyone in the NHS - as I have been on the receiving end of phone calls from angry patients a lot! I was angry as the hospital told me that had they received my referral when they should have I would have been seen a week ago and I would have had a week without the waiting and worrying. But what also made me angry was being given an excuse that the secretary wasn't in so it couldn't be faxed again. I have worked under tremendous pressure at times, but I hope I have never said anything like that to an anxious patient. How long does it take to stick a piece of paper in a fax and press 6 numbers? She could have done it in the time it took her to explain to me why she couldn't do it and that she would have to ring another branch of the surgery as they did have a secretary in who could do it .

Anyway I gave it an hour and then rang the hospital again and I've been put in for Monday morning.

Apart from my wobbly day a week ago I've been OK about it since, but must admit am feeling nervous now. Just want to get there and find out what is going on.

thank god you rang!

ok..so your prepeared..at my first appointmnt, they did and ultrasound scan on my breast and found nothing sinister, so then they took cells using a needle to draw them out and examine.

i papped myself when told this but although needle made me wanna hold my boob all night, it was 'ok'..so 'just incase' they want to do similar, wanted to let you know so you dont worry.

good luck..what time is it at?

Surfermum · 09/07/2006 20:04

Thank you Evesmama, it's 9.40 am, so nice and early. It's helpful to be forewarned too. The GP said they might do a needle aspiration and I keep telling myself when I had dd I dilated to 8cm without any pain relief, so I can do it!
Luckily dh is off work tomorrow, so he can come with me.

Fingers crossed for you tomorrow matey! I tried to call earlier and left a garbled message. Was wondering how things were going for you.
Was going to offer to keep you company tomorrow if you needed me - but glad to read that dh is coming with you. He's a star! Don't tell him I said that though it'll go to his head - see I haven't known him long and already know what he's like!
Jobs okay but may not be staying - another thread about it.

Surfermum · 09/07/2006 20:14

Thanks Sparkler. It was probably one of your colleagues who I was rude to! She had to ring your surgery to get someone there to fax the referral. Bonkers.

Whassup with the job then? Are you fed up with women shouting at you because the hospital lost your referral already . Where's the thread?

Good luck for tomorrow. Don't panic, it's happened to me twice now and both have resulted in 'all clear'. You are doing absolutely the right thing.

Surfermum · 10/07/2006 21:08

Thank you everyone for your support and good wishes. I was manhandled by a very nice doctor who said all he could find was normal breast tissue. Phew! What a relief. Dh, bless him, has felt really tired all day and said he had been really worried and feels like a huge weight had been lifted.

Oh and Sparkler, yes we do have an ansaphone, my Pa managed to switch it on at the weekend when we were away and we can't switch it off! BTW that's Pa as in Dad, I don't have a personal assistant.
