Here we are in Sports, I've been so lax about keeping up with anything outside our little thread that I'd no idea it was here - but have just spotted a cycling thread, so will be later to bed than planned....

OP posts:
qsack · 11/01/2007 13:59

I've just found this thread (was looking for n.london kids swimming lesson!) but seeing the running one thought i should have a look. currantbun i read your first post (recognise you from due feb 07 thread) i'm due feb 6th. this is my 3rd (wasn't sure if this is your first or not?) you said about being concerned about fitting running in once have baby. i did my first marathon before i got married in '98 and have trained for 4 but only run three, the last one this april 06. i had ds2 in april 05 and got running 5wks later, breastfed him till dec 05 while i was running just 3-4 times a week and then picked it up to 5 times from Jan although it varied between 4 and 6 depending on how i felt. i ended up running mostly evenings which isn't ideal but i was in a club too that i met with two evenings and for some long sunday runs if dh would allow! it definitely requires agreement and commitment from your other half if you want to do anything half serious as they will end up doing the childcare. i've got a place for FLM for 2008 too but having done marathon , baby, baby, marathon, baby I might just give my body a rest this year and do some shorter less time consuming running, maybe 10ks and the odd half. we live N4 and thinking of joining highgate harriers that meet on hampstead heath (again if i can get my dh to agree!) i exercised all the way through with both pregnancies running then in the gym but haven't manaaged much at all this time, just too knackered.

Steala · 12/01/2007 13:35

Good luck Pidge. I've withdrawn due to a stress fracture. I am really disappointed.

Pidge · 13/01/2007 14:52

poor you steala - what a bore. Hope you are on the mend soon.

hello qsack - quite inspired by your running plus babies! I'm planning baby number 3 myself, in fact that was a major motivation for going for the charity place for London this year - I kind of thought if it wasn't this year it might be 2010 before I got another chance!

I decided to have another rest day today before my long run tomorrow. Mostly this was forced on me by using this morning trekking to Ikea, and now I'm in culinary overdrive creating 3 different puddings /cakes for my dad's 70th birthday celebrations tomorrow, plus tonight I'm on venison casserole duty!! But have warned dp I'm off for a nice 10 miler tomorrow morning before the birthday lunch!

qsack · 13/01/2007 19:47

i am so jealous reading about all you guys going out running. it might sound mad i know but one thing not doing it because you don't feel like it but another when you physically can't run! it's not been so bad this time but last two pregnancies i used to go green with envy when i saw people out running. for me it keeps me sane and there's always room for those happy hormones....

Mumbojumbo · 14/01/2007 19:55

Quick question for you runners!

I want start running and found a 3km race on 25th March that I thought might be something to aim for. My question is, have I got enough time to get myself ready? I'm active -walk to school and back 3 times a day and go to the gym x4 times a week. I've got to start somewhere and I want a goal to aim for. I also hope to do the Race for Life later in the year.

Hope this isn't too stupid a question!
TIA
mj

McDreamy · 14/01/2007 19:58

I have just downloaded the BUPA guide to running which aims to get you ready for a 5km race in 8 weeks - I CANNOT run but I am going to start this week! here

Pidge · 14/01/2007 21:57

Mumbojumbo - that sounds like it will be no problem for someone like you who is fit and active anyway. A friend of mine who is definitely not a runner, but is active, managed to prepare for the Great North Run (13 miles!) in less than 2 months. Admittedly that's not very advisable, and injury risk is high. But a 3k is perfect, and a great platform for moving on to the 5k race for life target (also they have some 10ks later in the year, I think).

Good luck.

I did my long slow run today, the first in my marathon build-up. Just under 10 miles and it felt great - a lovely sunny day, and generally perfect running weather.

Legs feel very slightly stiff now, but otherwise no problems.

Mumbojumbo · 14/01/2007 23:04

Cheers Guys!

I'll have a look at the BUPA site. I got a great book from the library on running for beginners which I'm flicking through too.

Will hopefully put my name down if there is still space tomorrow. Then get down to some training!

JoPG · 15/01/2007 12:54

Mumbojumbo - Hope the training goes well, I am sure you will be fine for 3km in March

Pidge - Glad your first 'long run' went ok, lovely weather for it yesterday.

I have been out quite a bit recently, trying for 3 times a week plus netball in an effort to shift that Xmas lard! New trainers are great, though they do feel a bit funny cos very different to my old ones - we'll see how it goes. Unfortunately I also have to fork out for new netball trainers this month (why do both pairs seem to need replacing at the same time?) and they can be a nightmare to find in the shops. Luckily, Sweatshop are ordering in for me the ones that I want.

Have signed up for a half marathon on 1st April, I am assured it is a flat course (I hate hills with a vengeance!) though I am not convinced since I know the area and there are plenty of hills!

I am off to give blood tonight and am running 8 miles tomorrow night, followed by netball Thursday, running Friday and Saturday - a busy week but hopefully my jeams will feel a bit loser by Sunday!

lapsedrunner · 18/01/2007 19:42

Congrats to Paula Radcliffe, a baby girl.

Pidge · 18/01/2007 21:25

Ooh fab news about Paula Radcliffe.

Your turn next CurrantBun.

I did my first ever run during the lunchhour at work, and it was great. Half an hour and nice and easy.

Another short run tomorrow, and Saturday then a long one on Sunday.

hatwoman · 19/01/2007 10:32

aaaargh. hello everyone. long time no see! confession time. since learning that I hadn't got an FLM place I've barely been out. I really want to do the Kingston 16 miles. It's in 9 weeks. I'm sure I can do it ok but I wondered if anyone had any suggestions for a schedule? should I just talk a half-marathon schedule and add on to it or take a marathon schedule and cut it short? any advice? hope you are all doing ok and are in better shape than me!

hatwoman · 19/01/2007 11:14

ok I've done a schedule - can I be really cheeky and ask you people with more experience what you think? each line is a week.
4m steady/ 4m with bursts / 4 miles easy / 6
4m steady/ 4m with bursts / 4 miles easy / 7
4m steady/ 4m with bursts / 4 miles easy / 8
4m steady/ 4m with bursts / 4 miles easy / 9
4m steady/ 4m with bursts / 4 miles easy /10
4m steady/ 4m with bursts / 4 miles easy /10
4m steady/ 4m with bursts / 4 miles easy /10
4m steady/ 4m with bursts / 4 miles easy /10
4m steady/ 4m with bursts / 4 miles easy /14
4m/3m/2m/2m
16 mile RACE.

Pidge · 19/01/2007 14:29

hatwoman - I'm the wrong person to comment on your schedule, being a newbie myself. But great news that you are going for Kingston. It is so good to have a target to go for. I think the main thing is not to try to increase distance or number of runs too drastically and to listen to your body.

Because I'm so out of shape I'm keeping my midweek runs very short, my current schedule is:

Sun Tue Wed Fri Sat
10m 6m 3m 3m optional 3m

And the only thing I'm going to increase for the next few weeks is the Sunday run, with a view to extending one or other of the 3 milers in a few weeks time.

And I confess on my 3miler this morning my calves hurt so much I had to walk. But I remember this used to happen to me when I was not particularly fit and building up the runs last year. So I think if I take it steady and don't do anything stupid my legs will get the hang of it again.

Pidge · 19/01/2007 14:31

Oh and the other thing I've been told is to do your long run really really slowly - much slower than you intend racing at. Which for me in my present state is something of a relief!

hatwoman · 19/01/2007 14:36

do you know how long you should make your long run? I've tried to roughly follow the patterns of other schedules - eg half marathons, but do you think it's ok to do several 10s, one 14 and then the race (16)? It seems a bit scarey to me - I wonder if I should thrown in a couple of 12s?

Pidge · 20/01/2007 15:53

hatwoman - no idea I'm afraid. But I'm sure someone will give you better advice!

I'm frustrated because I've got some horrible virus and have spent the whole day asleep in bed. So no long run for me tomorrow. Probably no run at all in fact. And that's my chance for a long run gone for the week. Drat.

Pidge · 22/01/2007 20:47

No run for me again today - still feeling absolutely wiped out by mystery virus.

Am hoping I might manage 3-4 miles tomorrow (though am also cycling 35 minutes each way to work, so better be careful). Rather a big dent in my marathon schedules given that I was somewhat behind anyway. Must not panic, must not panic!

JoPG · 22/01/2007 22:11

Pidge - I am really sorry to hear about your sickness. I know it can be quite scary when you miss a 'long run' cos you feel that you can't catch up. However, I missed a couple when marathon training due to sickness and I still got back on schedule. I am sure that you will be fine. Do you think you will make it to your club night on Tuesday? Hopefully you will.
Sending you lots of healthy vibes

Pidge · 23/01/2007 10:32

Thanks for the sympathy Jo. I wouldn't be too worried about it but I was a bit behind having heard about the marathon place so late. And I'm still slightly headachey and have a sore throat today. Both my kids have had colds, which is different to whatever I had at the weekend, so that will be the next thing ..... !!

Anyway, I managed the 35 minute bike ride to work today. So current plan is that I won't go to my running club tonight as that would be a bit much, but I will try to do a very gentle 3-4 miler myself, then same again tomorrow. Then this weekend was supposed to be a slightly easier one on the schedules, but I'll try to do the 10-11 miler that I missed.

I just need a run of better health than we've been having for the past three months ...

Pidge · 23/01/2007 16:44

Ok, I am now getting the kids' cold, as I feared.

Can someone tell me not to panic.

I've only done 10 days proper training in the last 2.5 months. Aaaaaagh.

Pidge · 24/01/2007 09:42

Ok, have calmed down now. Despite the sore throat and sneezing I did a really gentle 4 miler last night, and it felt fine. In fact aerobically I feel in pretty good shape - I guess my cycling keeps me in good condition. My main problem (apart from getting bugs from the kids) is that my legs need toning up. I can really feel my calf muscles again.

Anyway, planning a little 3 miler in the snow at lunchtime today if all goes to plan.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

hatwoman · 26/01/2007 12:03

hello everyone. went out for 6.5 miles today. (wearing my FLM reject zipper top) it was SO cold, but I really enjoyed it. lots of birds out and about, river looked lovely. so glad to be getting back into it after the Christmas hiatus. And really pleased to find that my fitness level has not been set back to zero. I'm incredibly slow - but perfectly happy to do 6m. So - who's joing me at Kingtson - 1st April - I've done my schedule for the 16 miles. who's going to come and keep me company?

hatwoman · 26/01/2007 12:04

Pidge - hope your throat is feeling ok. I've been a bit under the weather but stuck to the 4 milers I had planned, and actually found them remarkably ok.

Pidge · 26/01/2007 14:14

Well done hatwoman! I confess I stayed under my duvet this morning rather than doing my 7am run. I'm still feeling a bit coldy and slightly under par so I reckon bed was probably preferable to running. And I'm just crossing fingers that I can do my 10-11 miler tomorrow.

I'm going to look at my schedules and see if a 16 miler might be a suitable thing to do that weekend ....
