Here we are in Sports, I've been so lax about keeping up with anything outside our little thread that I'd no idea it was here - but have just spotted a cycling thread, so will be later to bed than planned....

OP posts:

Pidge, I've also been tempted by the Rhayader 20 as it's close to where my in-laws live, but is usually near Easter and would involve us having to travel to Wales on consecutive weekends, so I've never managed to find a way to fit it in. Awesome scenery but the weather can be very erratic - one year runners were literally blown over and the water from the lake was thrown up onto the road like a small tsunami! Another year temperatures rose and everyone got sunburn!

Have been REALLY slack with my running over the past week. Last week managed two runs of 3 miles each and a session on the elliptical trainer. I'm finding it quite hard to fit anything in during the day because if I run/go to the gym from work I have to take a short lunch break so I can have the extra half hour to use later in the day. At this time of year I need my full lunch hour to do Christmas shopping, queue at the Post Office etc. I might just have to try an after-work run again but had become a bit reluctant to run in the dark with all the wet, slippery leaves around - it's easier to see where you're going when it's light.

Or maybe I should just take the remainder of my pregnancy off running and chill out!

Pidge · 07/12/2006 12:54

CurrantBun - chilling out sounds good. Remind me when your due date is ....

And I know what you mean about this time of year. I feel like I'm permanently dashing about. Christmas preparations are barely off the ground. And at work things are manic because we have a software delivery for Dec 21st! So running is rather a low priority. But in the new year .....

CurrantBun · 07/12/2006 14:06

Pidge, glad it's not just me who's finding it hard to fit everything in at the moment!

Due 26 February so still a bit soon to become a total slacker on the exercise front! I think I've more or less written off this week though, but next week should be slightly less manic on the shopping fron so should hopefully be able to fit some exercise in.

Gizmo · 08/12/2006 20:26

So, the BabyJogger thingy arrived at the beginning of the month annnnndddddddd....I'm back in the game! Woo hoo (I think). More to the point it's really nice to have an excuse to post on this thread again.

How's everyone doing? Long dark nights and pre-christmas panic getting in the way yet? I badly need to buy some more heavy duty sports bras but am totally borassic so I'm a bit reluctant to shell out for a bra that will be two sizes too big for me in 6 months time. In truth, my nursing bras are nearly heavy duty enough to do the job: very glamorous garments, they are .

Has anyone else got FLM in their sights this year?

moondog · 08/12/2006 20:29

Yes Pidge.
It's hardcore stuff!

hatwoman · 08/12/2006 20:33

hat pops head round the door, no marathon place, no running for 12 days . sneaks back out in shame.

Gizmo · 08/12/2006 20:42

You know, Hatwoman, it's not too late to enter all sorts of lurverly spring marathons....

Snowdon sounds particularly nice except I'm fairly confident I'd need oxygen tanks, as living in Cambridge means you don't adapt well to altitude.

hatwoman · 08/12/2006 20:59

no gizmo, I've decided not to go for a charity place, rather a lot on at the moment - I'd ebd up busting a gut. I hope to do the kingtson 16 miles in the spring, and might try for london again next year. we'll see.

hatwoman · 08/12/2006 20:59

chairty place, or another marathon, I meant to say

hatwoman · 10/12/2006 22:29

hmm did a very slow 6 miles yesterday - first time out for a fortnight, took it very easy and enjoyed it, but have pulled something. serves me right for slacking. it's very mild and I'm sure will go quickly

Welcome Amanda1, sounds like you'll be just fine. You know what it feels like to train & run a half marathon, provided you follow a good schedule you'll be fine for FLM

Snailpace · 12/12/2006 14:01

I too am doing the FLM in April. Caught my daughters dreadful cold tho and had nooo sleep so not venturing out of doors today!

lapsedrunner · 12/12/2006 18:23

Welcome to snailpace..do we know you by another name or are you new here? You'll find lots of support and advice for the FLM so keep posting

fatwoman · 12/12/2006 18:43

blummin eck all you people with FLM places. not fair. It's a bit quiet at the moment on this thread. I think we're all busy with Christmas and being wusses about the weather, well, I am anyway - along with my pulled muscle. Tried to run for a bus today and it really hurt. oh well, no need to feel guilty now, I clearly have to rest! (I feel my Christmas name will prove appropriate)

Welcome new folk. Very jealous of the FLM places. Didn't get in through the main ballot and last night didn't get a place through my club's ballot either.

I thought I'd be resigned to missing out ... instead of which I am now obsessed with the thought of getting a charity place instead. Ho hum .... off to mull it over some more. Can't decide what to do really.

Meanwhile, am a bit rubbish on the running front. Down to 2 runs a week at the moment. Am determined to at least get a 10 miler under my belt this weekend to make me feel better.

CurrantBun · 13/12/2006 13:49

After doing nothing all last week - just too busy trying to fit Christmas shopping in during my lunch breaks and haven't wanted to run after work in the dark now I'm over 7 months' pregnant - I did a nice 3-miler yesterday afternoon. I just ate lunch at my desk then went out later just before it got dark.

REALLY enjoyed it - and it was the least uncomfortable run I've done for a while. I was told at my last midwife appointment on Friday that the baby is now head-down and the fact it wasn't stamping on my bladder made a big difference! Also the groin pain I'd been getting each time I tried to run wasn't a problem at all, so must have been to do with the baby's position. If the baby stays where it is then hopefully I should be able to get out every other day or so.

Am jealous of all those doing FLM next year - this will be the first time I haven't done it since 2004 - but am hopeful I will be there to break my PB in 2008. I still have a Good for Age place from this year so unless they change the rules, it'll still be valid for 2008.

lapsedrunner · 13/12/2006 19:12

CurrantBun I really am beginning to think you may be Paula in real life! Please tell us what your good for age time qualifying time is?...it's pure jealousy as I got within 10mins of mine in FLM 1997 (eek) without meaning to then never went back the next year to try again....I'm now Lapsedrunner by name and intermitentrunner by nature .

Snailpace · 13/12/2006 19:27

Hi, yes I am new here! Had even a worse night with daughter last night (we both have a really bad cold) so still no run! I usually go out 4 times per week and this week have done none, so i am getting quite anxious. Particularly because I eat the food of ten men!

Its great to see so many other running mummies on here! Wow to running whilst pregnant! I tried to keep going when preggers with DD but got all light headed anytime I tried so I gave it a miss! Might try it next time, if there is a next time! lol :D

SpicymulledSheraz · 13/12/2006 20:20

Hi, i am a newbie to running. Just joined a club and run the farthest i hce ever done 4.5 miles - was so chuffed. Not sure where to go from here? I would like to do a race but don't want to make a tit of myself!

JoPG · 13/12/2006 20:46

Hello tp all the new runners, didn't expect to see anyone new until the New Year !
I too am being pretty lazy at the moment, there is just so much to do at this time of year, and running seems to be falling off the bottom of the schedule! Made it out twice last week, but missed last night. Must try for another run this week, but not sure when I will fit that in.
Pidge - Sorry to hear you missed out on a FLM place. As you know I had a charity place last year, and i didn't find it too difficult to get the money together. Good luck whatever you decide.

CurrantBun · 14/12/2006 11:17

Lapsedrunner, no: I'm not Paula (unfortunately - wouldn't mind her speed!) The FLM Good for Age qualifying time for women under 40 is sub-3:45 - I ran 3:23 at this year's marathon. I'd hoped to get 3:20 but had to take two weeks off due to injury quite close to the race, so aimed for sub-3:30 instead and was very pleased to come in sub-3:25.

Sheraz, you honestly won't make a tit of yourself if you enter a race - trust me, there will always be people far slower than you! I found entering a race as a newbie runner gave me real motivation and something to aim for. Why not pick a 5K (3.1 miles) because you already know you can run further than that? Then take it from there, and hopefully your club will have lots of good advice for you too.

Am hoping to do another 3 miles later today although it's horribly blustery out there! As my route is a circuit of Regent's Park I know that at some point I'll be running directly into the wind which won't be much fun!

Froglette · 15/12/2006 14:20

Agree you won't make a tit out of yourself at races. Everything I've done and there's a huge range of ability and pace. I'm slow and there's always loads behind me.

If you look at the website for a race they usually have prvious years results. Worth looking at to double check what sort of a race it is.
