It's an odd bug

He is exhausted, is being sick but intermittently more as a reaction to a temperature or shaking & he is sweating (it's not hot here)

He looks awful, no diarrhoea but going to the loo often, feeling queasy

He doesn't really get 'tummy bugs' and the few times he has had one (over the last 20 yrs or so) he has been fine within 6-10 hours - this has been going on since Sunday evening.

He has chronic asthma & lung disease (Bronchiectasis) so takes a lot of drugs and I'm a bit worried but I'm not sure why, something I can't quite put my finger on

Might be cholecystitus?

OP posts:
BoreOfWhabylon · 07/08/2013 19:45

Cholecystitis (inflammation/infection of the gallbladder) would certainly fit with the symptoms you describe KatyMac.

You did the right thing getting him help last night. I do hope he will start to improve soon.

Jollyb · 07/08/2013 19:47

Tazocin is a strong antibiotic that covers a wide range of infections so don't worry too much if they don 't know exactly where it is coming from yet.

Ask the nurses to request chest physio - if he is really struggling they may even be able to get an on call physio to see him.

Hope he feels better soon and look after yourself too.

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/08/2013 19:48

Some information about cholecystitis

KatyMac · 07/08/2013 21:28

They seem to be missing that DH does 1-3 hours of aerobic exercise each day in order to keep his chest clear & atm he can barely walk - so telling him to walk round the ward is a bit pointless and he won't do it without nagging

They said "he doesn't have a chest infection so he doesn't need to see a physio" on the regime from Papworth we haven't had a chest infection since Dec 10.......I am terrified as he hasn't missed more than a day in all that time

& I'm also wondering if any of his medications may have made this worse

I'm a worrier - can you tell?

sorry I forgot to say thank you everyone - you are being brilliant

I am such a wuss

OP posts:
twentyten · 07/08/2013 22:07

Thinking of you

digerd · 08/08/2013 06:15

How is your DH doing today and hope you managed to sleep?

KatyMac · 08/08/2013 07:47

Thanks - he is back on nil by mouth & waiting for an ultra sound

I slept really well - exhaustion I think Wink & the cat would not leave me alone - she slept right on my shoulder Hmm

OP posts:
digerd · 08/08/2013 08:59

Glad you slept well and you have a very caring cat who was obviously comforting you Smile. Good luck with the ultra sound results.

nextphase · 08/08/2013 09:23

Can you take the papwroth regime in to show thejm what he needs (assuming tis on Hospital paper)?
Or ring the consultant there, and ask fro advice on what DH should be doing to keep his chest clear, without jepodising anything else needed to clear the rest of the illness?

Stay strong. Your not a wuss.

I'm sure they are doing all they can. Well done for listening to your instinct, often just knowing something isn't right is a good indicator! Read up on Sepsis and uk sepsis trust. Seldom heard of but causes more deaths than bowel, prostate and breast cancer combined. Easily treatable if caught early yet often ward staff don't pick up on it until too late. If at any point you suspect it, speak up!! Hope today brings better news. Xxx

KatyMac · 08/08/2013 11:30

Spoke to Papworth, they are concerned but can't interfere; if the local hospital ask them they will help but if they don't .....

Exercise is important & I must keep nagging him

He is back on nil by mouth & the scan may be this afternoon; I'm a bit Hmm that his urgent 2am Wednesday morning scan still hasn't happened by 11:30 on Thursday tbh

OP posts:
KatyMac · 08/08/2013 11:59

The nurse asked when his course of Doxycycline would finish and wwas very surprised when I said it was prophylactic & was permanent

They keep seeing him as a fairly health young looking middle aged man & he isn't

OP posts:
KatyMac · 08/08/2013 12:38

Still no scan & he is watching everyone else eat Sad

OP posts:
digerd · 08/08/2013 13:17

Oh dear. I was hoping you had some news Sad. I know how awful it is when nil by mouth - I was like that for 5 days in hospital. About time they did that scan, that is the most important thing. Do hope for both of you it is today.

northender · 08/08/2013 13:29

Katy if he's on IV Tazocin then that should cover his chest as well re infections. Don't be afraid to ask a for a physio to come to see him though, it's still important for him to be doing chest clearance (or in this case for someone maybe to be helping him with it).

KatyMac · 08/08/2013 13:55

He was booked for 1:40 but is still there

Is the Doxycycline OK with the Tazacin? They really wanted to take the Doxtcycline off him but I wouldn't let them

My dad may come in with me this evening - just a bit of back up

OP posts:
KatyMac · 08/08/2013 16:08

He went for his scan at 3:15

OP posts:
northender · 08/08/2013 16:33

I don't think there's a problem with interaction between the two ABs but Taz is fairly broad spectrum so their rationale is probably that it is enough at the moment. Fingers xed for the scan

digerd · 08/08/2013 16:48

Thank goodness he's had his scan at last. I hope you hear the results asap.

KatyMac · 08/08/2013 17:47

Results before 7 apparently

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 08/08/2013 17:57

Fingers crossed for you Flowers

KatyMac · 08/08/2013 18:16

Off to see him now

OP posts:
KatyMac · 08/08/2013 19:36

No results today apparently
