so i have a really sharp stabbing pain in my chest right under left breast where bra band would lie. it feels like a bad stitch, hurts more if i breathe in deeply or lie on my back. i have had this before and put it down to heartburm but now dont think it is. was going to see gp tomorrow - anyone know what it could be?

Did you speak to someone at NHS or was it a quiz type thing you filled in have you got out of hours doctors near you? If so I would go there.. hope you feel better soon

Beehatch · 28/07/2013 18:48

Does sound like heartburn, what makes you think it isn't this time?

eggybrokenoff · 28/07/2013 18:48

quiz thing. was hardly comprehensive

Oh I get that sometimes, haven't had it for ages though. I found breathing shallow and lying flat on my back helped.

SweetSeraphim · 28/07/2013 18:50

We call this 'breathy-in pain'..... I was once told it's caused by sitting in one position for too long. I think it's indigestion.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 28/07/2013 18:50

I would say trapped wind.

eggybrokenoff · 28/07/2013 18:51

flat on my back way worse. it is a stabbing sharp pain not a burning sensation. it is a bit scary but i wasnt that worried til i did nhs quiz thing!

Hairbender · 28/07/2013 18:53

Could it be a pulled chest muscle? I had this a while ago and genuinely thought I was having a heart attack! Couldn't lie down though but breathing really hurt.

RappyNash · 28/07/2013 18:53

Intercostal muscle pain? Hurts A LOT.

idiot55 · 28/07/2013 18:55

Oh I get this I have a gallstone, but I'm too scared to agree to removal of my gallbladder.

Are you ok now

NeedSomeSun142 · 28/07/2013 18:56

sounds like trapped wind I get it. my mum always says it's wind round your heart

Sounds like my gallstone pain, and the op to have my gallbladder removed was fine... Best to have it checked out.

ubik · 28/07/2013 18:58

Put a call in to OOH and get nurse to assess you if you are worried about it.

eggybrokenoff · 28/07/2013 18:58

i think thats why nhs thingy flipped out cos its been going on for a while - hour now maybe fading in and out. i think it has gone then i do a test deep breath and it still hurts and lying down makes it really sore

OP posts:
eggybrokenoff · 28/07/2013 19:04

i will get it checked out but have no out of hours only nhs direct to call and i really dont think calling an ambulance is justified at all

MoreThanWords · 28/07/2013 19:11

Let us know what they say - I used to get this - I think it was stress related. Horrible how you can only take shallow breaths til you pluck up courage to take a deeper one, only for it to hurt like fuck Shock

KateShmate · 28/07/2013 19:28

Ooh sounds like a trapped nerve - I get them all the time! Give it a while and it will suddenly stop hurting! It feels like you can only do teeny tiny shallow breaths, and if you sit or lie in certain positions then it hurts more?

TheFutureMrsB · 28/07/2013 19:52

Was just about to say it sounds like gallstones but suzysheep beat me to it.

It's a horrible pain but I find that a hot bath helps lots and also breathing in the warm steam when running the bath too.

I had it last night and had to get DP to hold the shower head over my rib area whilst I lay in the hot bath as I couldn't move for the pain, it soon went and it does just literally disappear like it was never there.

eggybrokenoff · 28/07/2013 20:07

its still really sore. it disappears for a bit then the stabbing pain starts again. just right under left breast. just want it to bugger off tonight so i can go to sleep and get to docs tomorrow

Have you had a cold recently? I had this about a week after a cold, and it was pleurisy (side effect . You need someone to listen to your chest, and anti-inflammatories will help. I ended up blue lighted to hospital but that was because i couldn't breathe and was getting dizzy!

Butterkistbutterkistrarara · 28/07/2013 20:09

Sounds like the pain I had with gallstones. Hope you get better soon whatever it is.

lljkk · 28/07/2013 20:11

What happens if you walk around? Is there a friend who could drive you to A&E? I would go, tbh, but I am 45 so in the danger zone already.

MumnGran · 28/07/2013 20:12

If it is still going on, then it is going on too long and you really should go to get it checked.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 28/07/2013 20:12

So you just did the online quiz thing? You've not spoken to an actual person who advised you to call for an ambulance?

I had this once and it turned out to be heartburn - perhaps try some gaviscon.
