Medised

Has anyone used Medised on a 7mo old before. My DS has had a bad cough for three weeks now, and a cold for about a month. We've not had a decent nights sleep in that long and we are totally exhausted. Someone recommended we try medised but wanted advice to see if this is a good route to go.

It does knock them out, so know that you are using it for that reason. We have used it but never for more than 2 nights in a row. If you need to sleep (and boy, it sounds like you do) then go for it. We got really hung up about it but in the end I couldn't work out who was benefitting from us all being exhausted!

queenrollo · 02/05/2006 08:31

i have used it with ds (probably started at about 6 months)i only use it for nightime pain relief if he is too unsettled to get off to sleep....try it and see how you get on. i usually give him just 2.5 mils unless he is really bad in which case i give him the full dose.

i did find i needed to use the exacta-med syringe though as it is runnier than calpol and harder to give off a spoon...
good luck and hope it helps you get a good nights sleep.

We used from this age. It is very good for clearing the airways and stopping the cough.

mairimac · 02/05/2006 19:11

am going to try the medised tonight, I am on the same thought pattern as Beansprout by wondering who is going to benefit from us all being exhausted. Will keep you posted on how it goes.

Good luck. Hope you have a good night. We only use it as a last resort. Have used it 3 times and ds is 18mo. If it is used appropriately then that's fine. If it is used just to ensure sleep when baby is not unwell, I think that is a different issue.

Anyway, wishing you lots of zzzzzzzzs! Smile

I have been a Medised apologist in the past but am even more uncertain about using it now, because I have tried it myself and it is really, really strong Shock

I took a 2 year old's dose and it completely knocks you out, you are drugged up to the eyes and no mistake. Quite extraordinary.

flowertot · 02/05/2006 19:51

Interesting FandZ. We have given it to DD a few times to dry up her nose, but in the daytime. Never knocked her out - and haven't noticed it making her woozy. Will go try it myself because I feel awful now.......

poppiesinaline · 02/05/2006 20:08

I love Medised! Grin Dries up the snot and gives them a lurverly nights sleep (along with everyone else).

When I am ill I take Night Nurse (only when DH about) and that knocks me out but I feel so much better in the morning. I kind of think that Medised is a childrens version Wink

MeAndMyBoy · 02/05/2006 20:12

We've used medised in the past and it's been brilliant. Does make DS quite sleepy so only use it at night now as he doesn't have a day time nap anymore.

To help with the cough we also put a couple of books under the head end feet just to lift it a couple of inches and it helped stopping him getting coughing fits in the middle of the night.

morocco · 02/05/2006 20:47

just make sure you don't get too hooked on it ;) it's great for getting them to sleep, so great it's hard to stop!

sunandmoon · 02/05/2006 20:59

Sanatogen vitamins syrup is wonderful. Our DD is 9 months old, and went very well through the winter with only few days of coughing . We give her one spoon each morning. Medised is in the medicine cupboard and we did use it few times while teething, it does work well, and do give a good night sleep to the all family...Wink

mairimac · 03/05/2006 08:10

I used the medised last night and as far as I'm aware didn't knock him out at all. He was awake frequently in the night coughing but not for as long or as bad. Still didn't knock him for six though!

Personally, I don't think it does knock them out, I think it just makes them drowsy. Also dries up the cold a bit meaning they can sleep easier.

jamese · 03/05/2006 11:14

It is great stuff - but my dd (2.4) can no longer use it. We used it use it every time she had a cold and was coughing. It dries the gunk up really well. But we once gave it to her 3 times in one day - when she was very poorly and now everytime she has just 1 dose she gets a nasty rash and seems to be allergic to it.

The doctor told us to stick to calpol at the time, but that doesn't do anything for her colds.

Really miss it. I could do with a good night sleep and DD is getting fed up with having a snotty nose!

chapsmum · 03/05/2006 11:27

didn't want to spoil your dream by telling you that medised can actually cause some to children to be more hyper after the initial sedating effect..

fastasleep · 03/05/2006 11:41

Lol medised has a sort of 'calming' effect on my DS (2.2) but that's it... and only for a wee bit! He's mad though... and I've only had to use it with horrible teething about 3 times..

Monkeybar · 03/05/2006 11:57

It does taste disgusting, though, so you might find it gets spat out at you, which is what my ds did. made him cry and the syringe is the only way to go, as he clamps his lips tight shut. Thankfully not many teeth yet, so can still get syringe in through clamped lips!

ProudDaddy · 15/05/2008 20:06

We have a 4 1/2 month old son and our neighbour has popped round (they have a 16 month old son) explaining that the pharmacy will no longer sell medised for under 2 yrs old. It says on the box suitable for 3 months plus, has anyone else had this problem recently ?

yogimum · 15/05/2008 20:15

Gosh, prouddaddy, I am really shocked at that as I used it from about 5 months especially when ds had a cold and difficulty breathing.

scattyspice · 15/05/2008 20:18

I asked a pharmacist in Superdrug about it for my DD (3). She did not reccommend it at all, said they don't sell it for under 3s and said that it would just bung her up anyway. I have always just given Calpol and tucked the LO in bed with me.

Good Luck.

SlightlyMadSweet · 15/05/2008 20:22

Medised has been banned from use in under 2's.

Sorry.

SlightlyMadSweet · 15/05/2008 20:27

here is the press release regarding its withdrawal for under 2s. Dated 27 March.

yogimum · 15/05/2008 20:27

When did that happen? . Didn't hear anything on the news (or mumsnet!)

SlightlyMadSweet · 15/05/2008 20:29

It was all over the news...but to be fair the news artickle was about "cough medicines" . It just so happens medised is buried in the long list of "cough medicines".

Boxes will still have 3m+ on. They have until Oct to repackage them.

yogimum · 15/05/2008 20:31

I do remember the cough remedy list as I printed it off but don't remember medised been on there. Thanks for the link.
