Whats the name of that medication they give for painful periods ??

Am going to book appointment this week as I cannot stand to have periods this painful anymore.

I went back on the pill as before when I was on it I never got any pain at all but it's not working this time. Yet again this morning, I couldn't stand up as the pain was that bad and normal painkillers don't do a thing.

Last month I had to get my neighbour to walk the girls to school as standing was unbearable, thats not normal is it ?

Is it something acid, or did i dream that ?

Is it Ponstan? Got given this by a gynae, but it didn't help me. Its supposed to block the production of prostaglandin IIRC, which is supposedly what causes the severe cramping. The only thing I found touched my pain was paracetamol and codeine, Paracodol being my brand of choice.
Poor you - it's one of the most debilitating things to happen to me, thankfully seems less bad since I had my son. HTH and that you get sorted soon

Not sure what the medication is but could you try changing your brand of pill? That might help

Meant to say I had really bad periods after DS until I started on Microgynon -now I hardly get a period and certainly don't get any pain.

Ponstan is the brand name of Mefenamic Acid (I think).
It's brilliant stuff.

My pain has got worse since kids. Before kids it was bad but was just back ache and stomach ache, now my stomach gets so sore I can't touch it or stand up, have a wee or anything without feeling faint.

My mum has given me a few of her co codamol tablets to use until I can get to the docs, but tbh even those aren't getting rid of it. It's ok when i sit still but moving is agony.

It's Microgynon that i'm on and it used to really help but it's not doing anything now at all really,. although I am to scared to come off it incase the pain is even worse.

Nutty that sounds definitely like something to see the doc about. Not normal level of pain. xx

Yeah i think so Pruni, and my mum was horrified when I told her I couldn't stand up.

Hope I get a good doc, some of them are so unsympathetic with womens probs I may aswell talk to the wall.

Go in and say you are concerned about possible endometriosis - even if it's not that, it shows you have looked into things a bit and don't want to be fobbed off right away.

Yep I will menation that. Looking on a website for it I get every listed symptom for that apart from heavy periods. Mine are virtually non exsistent, in fact the lighter they get the worse the pain seems to get.

Sounds very much like endometriosis to me. It usually improves after pregnancy but can come back with a vengeance unfortunately.

How old is your youngest?

My youngest is 3.5. After he was born the pain dissapeared for about 6 mths but as you say it has come back with avengence and is worse than ever before.

Mine started to come back when DS1 was about 3. Luckily I fell pregnant again and that shelved the problem temporarily. DS2 is now 4.5 and the pain is getting to epic proportions so I am thinking of asking for another gynae referral.

Mefanemic or tranexamic acid are the meds you're thinking of but I think you should get this further investigated to ascertain the underlying cause of the painful periods (endometriosis is unfortunately the common culprit in this regard). Both of these have mixed success for women, it can be like putting a band aid on an open wound and more importantly it will do nothing to address the actual problem longer term.

Would ask doc for a referral to a gynae to get the possibility of you having endometriosis checked out. BTW it is usually only diagnosed through a keyhole surgery operation called a laparoscopy.

BTW do not let the GP be dismissive!!. Some are highly ignorant when it comes to dealing with such problems and you should have a gynae referral.

I dread to think how painful mine would be if i weren't on the pill.

The pain wakes me up several times in the night and if anyone dares touch my stomach I shoot through the roof.

If they refer me what will they do ??

When I saw the gynae (10 years ago now) I had various tests - blood, urine, swabs, scan etc etc.

She (yeah, lucky me got a female gynae!) then decided to do a laparoscopy which confirmed endometriosis.

Ahh right, sounds bit scary but has to be done I spose.

Will try and see one of the female docs if I can get in.

Not as scary as it sounds, honest. Laparoscopy is a straightforward op and at least with a proper diagnosis you can start on some treatment.

ponstan forte

I was prescribed Ponstan Forte before I had ds and was working. It worked as a muscle relaxant as well as a painkiller but was pretty powerful and I felt a bit spaced out if had it without eating as well.
