Eh?! How does that work then? Big needle up your foof? I'd sooner just stick with the two paracetamol half an hour beforehand that I've taken each of the three times I've had Mirena fitted.
It honestly isn't that bad!

Was it a spray? Lots of gynaes use a very local anaesthetic on just the cervix as its not that it reduces pain, but stops you feeling faint due to vaso vagal reaction

My cervix was numbed with something, I still fainted. I've never experienced such pain and I've had 3 DC's including a back to back labour so am honestly not a wimp.
The mirena going in felt like someone was pushing needles into my pelvis. Strangely having it taken out didn't hurt at all.

It can't be a spray. There are no nerve endings in the ectocervix (the part of the cervix dr sees)

the first thing I thought when told I needed a hysterectomy was 'oh good, won't have to get the Mirena changed' and I didn't even find it hurt having it done last time. Its just the anticipation that it could really fucking hurt that kills me. Brilliant device though. Best thing ever for my awfully heavy periods. So wish I'd got one year and years earlier.

I am having my mirena taken out and replaced next Friday - and this thread has worried me quite a lot and reassured me a bit. I was planning to take paracetamol beforehand - hopefully that will help.

I thought it was lidocaine? Just had copper coil fitted before Christmas. It was still painful!!!

Disn;t even feel mine. Was getting à smear at same time and had to be rôle it was over. Bits as hard as nails!

I had a mirena fitted in December, didn't get offered any anaesthetic but it didn't hurt any more than a smear usually does, that being not really at all, just a bit uncomfortable.

How painful did you all find the mirena after having it in?

Ive had mine 3 weeks now and am still very crampy. Didnt expect it to hurt so much tbh.

I didn't have cramps. The unbearable part for me was the endless and abundant smelly mucus, usually tinged with perpetual drops of period blood.

I didn't have much pain afterwards but I bled quite heavily for 6 months at which point I had it removed. I now have the implant and very light/non-existent periods.

About 8 months, I think. Then I had it taken out.

Took ten months for bleeding to finally Seattle but all good now. Cramping on and off for several months.

Jeez. Dont think I can take this for months. This is the first contraception that has made either spotty or a rage filled loon.

I am very interested in the anaesthetic element - does anyone have some proper information?

I am in the process of having my mirena coil removed.

I say process, because I have been to the Dr's twice and she can't find the strings, so I have been for an ultrasound to make sure it is still there, and then I have been back to the Dr's again last week and she STILL can't get it out!

However, last week after having her rumage around and not retrive it, I was very ill. I passed out twice in the Dr's surgery and it took a good 2 hours or so to stop having pins and needles in my hands and feet, and generally feeling like I was going to throw up. I had terrible cramps for about 24 hours and am still bleeding now.

I have a referral to see the Gyne at hospital now, and I'm very worried about having it removed under anything less than a general anaesthetic!!!

It didn't really bother me either having it put in or taken out (I have coil number 2 now). No anaesthetic either. Still hoping dh will have snip next year as periods are quite heavy still.
